The feel of the leather on my back has my heartbeat speeding up and the edge of panic seeping into my blissful state. The memories of that night dance just outside my field of vision, but itâs Everettâs soft touches that hold me here with him, that stop my mind from carrying me away to the night I wished for death.
âReady, dove?â he asks gently as his fingers trail up the length of my spine in a soothing gesture.
âYes,â I whisper, pressing my face into the cushion. The worst thing I can do is tense, it will only enhance the pain, but I donât know how to feel anything other than tense right now.
Itâs only a moment before the leather hits my skin in a gentle blow. This isnât about punishment anymore, and if Iâm really honest with myself I donât think it was to begin with. This has always been about giving me back something I lost. The sting comes a moment later, but itâs almost comforting. The burn of my ass hurts, but not in the way it did as Craig hit me over and over again. The pain Everett inflicts is sensual and sexy, it has a place and a purpose.
âGreen,â I say before Iâve really thought it all the way through. But then again, the safe words arenât there for me to think over. Theyâre there if something is too overwhelming, too painful, and Iâm not there.
He praises me quietly before continuing, and each hit is equally freeing as it is painful. The burn rushes through my body, my nerve endings firing with electricity, but the tears running down my cheeks arenât those of agony, theyâre tears of freedom, of letting go of something that has held me down for so long I almost forgot what it was like to let go.
âWynter?â The concern is evident in Everettâs voice as the heavy leather hits the carpet and a moment later heâs kneeling beside me.
Every single part of me wants to reassure him, wants to tell him that heâs done everything I asked him to do and that Iâm not crying because he hurt me, but the emotions washing over me are too overwhelming to force words through.
He curses as he reaches for the silk wrapped around my wrist but I manage to pull my arms away from him before he can touch them. âDove, Iâm just going to untie you, Iâm not going to hurt you.â His words are full of agony. He thinks Iâm pulling away from him because Iâm scared, but thatâs the furthest thing from the truth.
âI want to keep going,â I choke, the words barely audible around my sobs.
âNo.â He shakes his head. âWeâve done enough. I donât want to hurt or scare you.â
I gulp in breaths of air because I donât want this to stop. I need to tell him the tears arenât bad, that Iâm releasing years of sadness, years of fear Iâve never been able to work through on my own. âIâm not scared. Iâm not hurt.â The words are rushed and barely audible, but theyâre enough to make Everettâs hands pull back so he can look at me.
âWynter, youâve had enough,â he says softly, but thereâs a bite behind it, one that only seems to stroke the fire burning beneath the tears falling against my cheeks.
âKeep going,â I rasp through tears. âPlease keep going.â
He stares at me for a moment, as if deciding whether or not he should do as Iâm asking. âDo you want to take a break?â
I shake my head. âNo, please, keep going.â Itâs hard to speak through the sobs, hard to think through the deafening sound of my heart beating in my chest.
Everett brushes the tears from my cheeks, conflict etched into his handsome face. âTell me where youâre at, dove. And I swear to God if you lie to me you wonât be coming for a month.â
I choke on a laugh and lean into his soft touch. âGreen,â I tell him, and when doubt crosses the deep blue pools of his eyes I feel like I need to explain as best I can while in the state I am. âThe tears arenât bad tears.â
Another moment passes before understanding crosses his face and a small smile tugs at his lips. âOkay little dove. Five with the paddle and then youâre done, okay?â
I nod. âOkay.â
He only lingers for another second before returning to his place behind me. The cool wood of the paddle rubs across my burning flesh and almost feels comforting, but I know that will be short-lived. Everett exhales a long breath as the wood lifts from my skin, and then the most deliciously blinding pain comes down on my already stinging ass.
I let out a yelp, but thereâs no panic, no fear. Itâs just Everett and I, none of the memories I expect to flood my vision, and even though Iâm crying, even though tears are saturating the cushion underneath my face, a smile tugs at my lips as I say the word heâs waiting to hear.
âGreen.â
Everett delivers the last four hits of my punishment in rapid succession, and each blow feels more and more like my ass is about to light the entire room on fire, but when the last one lands, all I feel is at peace.
The ties at my wrist give way at the same time the heavy wood hits the carpet, and before I can take my next breath, Everett has me bundled in his lap on the sofa. His hands are everywhere, the back of my head as he holds me to him, my back as he strokes comforting circles into the bare flesh. His lips graze my throat, my cheek, my lips, never staying in one place for more than a moment before moving to the next.
âYou did so good, little dove. Iâm so proud of you,â he whispers into my neck, and heâs not the only one. If you told me a week ago I was going to do what we just did, I would have laughed in your face and then would have proceeded to panic at the very thought, but as I curl up in Everettâs arms, the burning of my ass reminding me of what weâve just done each time the wounded skin brushes along his pants, all I feel is pride.
I faced my fears, and I did it with Everett by my side every step of the way.
I donât know how much time passes, but he never lets up his hold on me, never stops whispering calm words of encouragement as he kisses and touches every inch of my naked body, and I lap up every moment of it. There was a long time where I thought I would never be in Everettâs arms like this again, where I thought I would never see him again, but to be here now, it feels right.
