Chapter 17: Chapter 17

The Moment to FightWords: 10012

So apparently, I could only use various powers when Declan was around. That was pretty obnoxious considering the fact that I hated him most of the time.

I knew that only a Guardian and their paired Supporter were able to share each other's powers, but I could already do it with him without being his Supporter. It didn't make any sense so I chose not to dwell on it.

"Spy!" One of the Rebels sitting on the opposite side of the room yelled, jumping up from their seated position.

I threw my hands up to stop them from advancing and started to speak.

Before I could even get one word out to defend myself, the Rebel who led me here had other ideas. He moved so fast across the room to the Neph who called me a spy. I couldn't make out his movements because he was just a blur.

The next thing I knew, he had the Neph shoved up against the wall. He was holding them by the shirt, their feet dangling off the ground.

"Trev sent her. Do not say such betraying words," he spat.

Then he dropped the other Neph on the ground and made his way back to my side.

Since it was so dark, I couldn't really see what the spy-calling Neph looked like. I assumed it was a female from the long hair, but I couldn't be sure. Whatever, I'll deal with her later.

"You can confirm that Trev is alive, correct?" My new savior asked me.

I nodded in response.

He clasped his hands in front of him and remained silent. I glanced at him and saw him staring intently at a different female. She had short, light brown hair with bangs and teal colored eyes. She nodded slightly and he turned to me.

It almost looked like they were communicating in their minds with each other. So cool.

He unclasped his hands and stuck one out to me.

"My name is Mei. Welcome to the Rebels."

I took his much larger hand in mine and said, "Kiera. Glad to be here."

Addressing the rest of the Rebels, Mei announced, "She is a part of us now. Treat her as such."

"Ry, please bring Kiera to one of the rooms in this building. We will all sleep here for the night and discuss our plan in the morning."

A petite girl sprung off the floor and bounced her way over to me. Looping her arm through mine, she skipped out of the room with me trying to keep up with her.

The hallway didn't offer any more light so I couldn't see her appearance either. I was only able to see her bright pink eyes and long eyelashes fanning her cheeks.

She skipped all the way to a door that didn't actually look about to fall apart and shoved it open. There wasn't anything in the room, of course. I would have to sleep on the floor, but I was used to it by now from living in the Gray Sector my entire life.

"If you need anything, don't hesitate to come ask me. My room is literally right across the room from yours," Ry smiled.

"Okay, thanks," I smiled back.

She left the room and shut the door behind her.

There was one window high off the ground that wasn't broken. The moon light shown in through it and illuminated the immediate space underneath where I curled in a ball to fall asleep.

The creak of my door opening woke me up and I was momentarily confused.

I couldn't remember where I was or why I was even there.

At the look on my face, the intruder laughed.

"Good to see you're awake. It's time to discuss our next plan," Mei said.

With the sunlight in the room now, I could clearly see him.

Mei had longish, light blond hair, that was almost white. His gold eyes seemed to glow even more than last night. He was wearing all black still and didn't look all that muscular, but I knew better. He probably had muscles packed on him. Oh yeah, and he was attractive.

He smirked and I got the sudden thought that he could hear what I was thinking. So I asked him.

"I try to block out everyone's thoughts and I've taught all of them how to put up a wall, so to speak, so that I can't. With you, though, it's harder because you haven't established the wall. So the answer to your question is, yes. I did hear everything you just thought."

"Oh jeez," I said covering my face with my hands.

"Don't worry. I'll teach you how to set up a wall, too. I was reading your mind a lot last night to make sure that you were actually here for the reason you said you were. I knew we could trust you because you didn't have any other thoughts that might say otherwise."

I understood where he was coming from, so I joined him at the door and we headed to the room we were all in yesterday.

Declan

I already know that I'm not always the nicest person, if you will. However, I did know how to be nice. The morning after Trev had bawled his eyes out, I talked to him.

"Uh, Trev? Is...uh..." Yeah I had no experience with crying Nephilim. What the hell was I supposed to say, dammit.

"Sorry, I didn't mean to break down like that in front of you last night. You probably don't even really care why so I'm not going to tell you," he respond, going cold.

No way in hell was I responding to that. I didn't trust myself not to do something I would regret.

~

Trev

Yeah, Declan was the last Nephilim I wanted to discuss my issues with.

The truth was, I broke down because I couldn't hold it in much longer. I haven't cried like that since...since the Known Families killed my sister.

I did join the Rebels because I wanted revenge on the Known Families for what they put me through. But the real reason was to get back at what they had done to my sister.

My sister, Lizi, was two years older than me. She was always smiling and telling me that my power would come soon. She had gotten hers way before I got mine. She died before I even received one.

Anyway, when she found out that I would be kicked out of the Sectors for not having a power, she went to the Known Family, the parents of the Descendants.

It was completely idiotic what she did, but she did it to try and protect me. It was all a futile effort.

When my sister appealed to them about my sentence, they were angered that she dared contradict them. They had her power source stripped right there and we were both tossed to the Gray Sector.

We didn't know that there were gangs riddling the streets at night. Therefore, one night while we were walking the seemingly barren streets, we were ambushed. My sister fought hard until her death. She died protecting me.

She still had her wings and knew that I wouldn't be able to fly off with her and I was far to heavy for her to carry.

She took the sky and told me to run. I hesitated, and in that moment of hesitation, my sister knew I wouldn't leave her.

She flew back to make me run the opposite direction when one of the gang members threw a knife.

My sister plummeted from the sky and I never ran faster in my life.

Last night, thinking about that made me cry. I felt so hopeless. I had thought that I had a chance with the Rebels to elicit my revenge. When the attack did not at all go as planned, I had given up.

Then Declan and Kiera had said that they wanted to help. All the Rebels had joined for themselves. I know they didn't give a shit about my story or each other's stories.

However, I saw that Declan and Kiera had listened to my story and truly wanted to help me and all of the other Nephilim who have been wronged by the Known Families.

My sister's death and their determination had made long hidden tears break free.

We all gathered in a circle and sat on the cracked, concrete floor in the dumpy building.

Mei must have been Trev's second in command or something because he did all the speaking and seemed like the current leader.

His gold eyes flashed as he began to formulate a plan.

"Okay, so this is what we are going to do; with at least half of us either dead or captured during our ambush at The Trials, we will have to be careful, but brave-"

Two quick knocks followed by three slow ones made everyone freeze. Mei held a finger to his lips and slowly got to his feet. Carefully walking to not make any noise, he backed out of the room and headed to the door.

Some down the hall said, "Don't worry. You can trust him."

The sound of multiple footsteps echoed back to the room we were all seated in. Everyone sat cautiously and looked ready to attack at any given moment.

When Trev stepped in the room followed by Mei, everyone's jaws dropped, including mine.

What surprised me even more was when Declan stepped through the door, too. I thought we agreed to have them stay at Declan's house. What the hell was going on here?

"This is Declan as you all may know," Trev said gesturing at Declan who remained indifferent. Declan scanned the room until his eyes landed on mine and he came and sat next to me. Everyone stared at him and looked weary.

"Anyway," he continued, waving his arm, "We came up with the perfect plan. Mei, thanks for taking over for me in my absence. You have demonstrated the qualities of a true leader. You may sit down now and I will take the burden off your shoulders."

Mei sat down next to a girl and tangled his fingers with hers. I recognized her as the girl who I thought he had spoken through the mind with. So, he had a girlfriend.

"This is the plan. We are going to go to the Known Family's house and begin a rebellion. Be prepared for no one else to back us up. However, we do have one secret weapon up our sleeves," he said nodding towards Declan.

"If Declan is with us, the Known Family will not want to risk harming the First Descendant's son. We will gather right in front of the house and speak about the faults in this society and what's really going on behind closed doors. Declan will also speak about the issue and might even be able to persuade a few Neph.

"However, this could all just be wishful thinking so prepare for the worst. You have all survived through much worse and I know you can do this."

Trev slowly looked each Rebel in the eye and nodded. When he got to me, he smiled a genuine smile that I didn't think I would see again. I beamed back and Declan glared at Trev. That made Trev smile even more and I actually felt good about the plan.

All that was left was to do was to actually follow through with it.
