"Don't test me, not with your safety"
Selena rushed out of the room but so did Connor. He held her back by her arm, turning her around to look at his face and Connor didn't try to hide what was on his mind.
"What are you doing?" He asked in a sharp voice.
"What?" Selena pulled her hand away from his roughly.
"Selena, he is trying."
"I know! Don't you think I know that?!"
The barrier had broken, Connor could see the tears trying to escape her eyes now, the ones she was trying really hard to hold back. "Selena..."
"I can't help it," she mumbled as she rubbed her face harshly with her hands, "I can't help the annoyance that spreads through my whole being when I see him. He thought I wanted to ruin his pack, he thought the injuries I came in with were fake; he thought I faked it all. His beta saw me when I had come to this place, he knew how I looked and he..."
"Selena," Connor interrupted her softly, "Put yourself in his position, you were trained to be an alpha too."
"I did, the reason why I am still here is that I did put myself in his position. He had to make a tough decision."
"This is exactly what the hunters want. You two cannot be defeated when together, they're following the typical divide and conquer strategy."
"Thanks to him, they might succeed." Selena could see that Connor was going to speak again, but she was seriously losing her patience completely, "Connor, please."
But Connor was in no mood to listen, "Do you feel better by making him suffer?"
Selena's pleading and tired expression hardened as soon the words left Connor's mouth. Connor's face showed only a slight bit of guilt but he ignored it. He needed to understand what was going on in her mind, and if he has to instigate her for that, he will.
Selena silently turned around and walked away, her whole body stiff. Connor sighed and walked back inside.
"You didn't need to do that," Xavier said, "She needs you by her side."
"Xavier," Connor silenced him, "She doesn't hate you."
Xavier scoffed which was followed by a sad smile, "I could state a few points to prove otherwise."
"She understands," Ryan said this time, "but she's still hurt."
Xavier nodded and walked out of the office, leaving the two men standing there.
Selena once again walked straight out of the packhouse. Her face was still set in a straight line as a lot of thoughts moved around in her head. She walked at a fast set pace which then fastened as she changed into her wolf and rushed through the forest.
Izzy cautiously joined the connection with her human. Selena was very fast but her alpha instincts had kicked in with her training so hard again, she was very cautious about everything around her.
'Selena, calm down.'
'I hate it,' she growled, not slowing her pace at all.
'I know.'
'I just get so upset and then angry and...'
'You don't need to explain. I am a part of you, I know.'
They both remained quiet as Selena jumped over a fallen log and landed as a human. There was a very low sound which Selena related to waterfalls. But she hadn't really heard about any waterfall in this territory and thus trotted towards the noise.
After a walk of a minute and a half, Selena stopped in her tracks when she reached a cliff. It was at the extreme edge of the territory in the north, she realised that she had never been to the extreme north in this pack, that explained to her why she didn't know about the waterfalls here.
The area was very calming for Selena. Waterfalls and mountains are two of her favourite things in the world, the cold breeze and the soothing sound of the waterfall calmed her down as she sat looking at the view.
Xavier's whole pack was situated by the mountains. Of course, there would be a cliff and a waterfall. Selena wondered why she hadn't realised this first. The town at the foothills consists only of werewolves. The packhouse was the only house midway up the hill as most of the others lived in the town.
After quite some time of just sitting there and weighing all of her thoughts, Selena had completely missed when it had turned dark with the setting of the sun.
After a few minutes of contemplating whether she should go home or if she could stay here a bit longer, Selena stood up and turned around. If she paused to think about it again, she would think herself into sitting there for longer. Izzy however, was asking her to go home, the wolf felt restless, as if something was wrong.
Running was something which always helped Selena deal with her thoughts. Currently, the memory that came back with running, was when Connor would chase her around the pack and the times they spend playing games and training.
Selena smiled at all the memories but her focus was still very much on her surroundings. If she was even a little distracted, she might have missed that crooked paper stuck to one of the trees.
She skidded to a stop and then slowly jogged over to the tree and stared at the note, still in her wolf form.
Selena's throat tightened at seeing that name again, but Izzy gave her human confidence. They have trained harder than ever. And they are prepared now. There are no emotions getting in the way anymore.
Selena felt her insides relax a bit. Leon seemed nothing more than delusional to her now. She is one of the strongest warriors, she's an alpha herself, she has her bother with her. Xavier was there for her too, she thought. He and Ryan, Damien, Adriana... the full family were there with her.
If Leon thought that it would be easy for him to take her away, he was in for a very rude awakening. It would be rather interesting to see him trying that, Selena thought.
She took the note in her mouth before she turned around and went back to the packhouse only to be greeted by a very angry Xavier and Connor. Ryan looked serious too, though he looked more worried than angry. The others were there too.
"Hey guys," she said and jumped on the sofa.
"Get your ass off the sofa!" She was pushed down.
"Jeez, Ileana," Selena mumbled, rubbing her right arm on which her body landed.
"Go take a shower before you're bouncing on the sofa, it doesn't need to stink like you." Ileana rolled her eyes.
"Running and training does that to you, you know?" Selena answered sarcastically, referring to how many training sessions Ileana had missed in the recent days.
"Where were you?" Xavier asked. His eyes were staring straight into hers. Selena's smile immediately fell as she locked eyes with him.
"Out."
"Where?" Xavier almost growled and she sighed. She saw Connor's expression harden from the corner of her eyes.
"Running."
"You could have told us before leaving," he said, trying his best to be calm but his voice was hard with anger.
"I am a warrior and I can fight. I don't need anyone looking over me all the time," Selena said, mistaking his anger to be doubt on her capabilities.
"You aren't going out of the house alone anymore," Connor said seriously, "Actually, no one is." He looked at Xavier, "Make an announcement that No one should go out alone, at least two people should be together."
"What is wrong with..." Selena stopped talking when he waved a paper in front of her face; Leon's note. She realised it had probably caught his attention when she fell down.
"When were you planning to tell us about it?" he asked. Angry Connor can be pretty scary, something Selena had never seen directed towards herself.
"It's not important. He can't take me and we all know that. This is the strongest pack with best warriors and I am a warrior myself."
Selena was just going to leave when she heard someone sighing. She recognized the voice to be Connor's and Xavier stood right in front of her the very next second.
"Why are you doing this? Because you're angry and hurt and you wanna make me feel the same? Well, let me tell you something, I learnt from my mistake. I'll always trust you. Take as much time as you need to come in terms with that."
Selena looked at him with a blank face, hiding the surprise, she wasn't sure until then if Xavier had heard her conversation with Connor earlier, now she was. Xavier had been patient with her all throughout this time. She looked at him, staring deep into his eyes trying to convey everything that she had hesitated and held herself back from saying.
Xavier too held her gaze, and he conveyed everything; his hurt, anger, desperation, pain, everything. Selena turned to leave when the gaze became too intense for her, but Xavier wasn't done yet.
"You don't want to talk to me, you don't want to see my face? Fine, I can't promise you the latter, but I promise you that you won't have to talk to me as long as it is not about pack business or you actually want to talk to me."
Selena wanted to interrupt but there was a fire in his eyes which made her stay quiet.
"I won't initiate any conversation with you," Xavier said softly, but his voice still had that hard edge to it, "but that doesn't mean that I'm gonna let you take such risks again."
Selena's gaze softened slightly but Xavier didn't acknowledge it, "Your anger with me is justified. I understand that but I will lock you if that's what it takes to keep you safe, Selena. Don't test me, not with your safety."
With that, he walked up the stairs, his body stiff. They all looked up the stairs until they heard the door to his room slam shut.
Selena looked around to see everyone staring at her.
"He really regrets his decision, Selena," Aiden said, his eyes suspiciously bright. Selena nodded but didn't say anything. What could she possibly say? She herself couldn't figure out her own emotions, she understood why he had to do what he did. The alpha part of her understood, the mate part of her wasn't still completely okay with it. She too headed up the stairs to her previous room.
The next day, Selena woke up with an empty feeling in her heart. She had a shower and went downstairs for breakfast, and was joined by Ryan along with Connor.
"Where are Aiden and Evelyn?" She asked them.
"They went with Xavier," Connor replied.
"And where did they go?"
"The Blood Moon pack."
Selena nodded remembering the meeting the previous day. Her eyes fell on Roy. She thought about how Roy never sat with them and that reminded her of Devon, leading her thoughts back to Xavier once again.
She wished she could have spoken to him before he left.
"He respects us," Ryan said when he noticed Selena's eyes on him, "Since he was a kid he always looked upon as the leaders. He has his own group of friends though and he likes to sit with them."
Selena nodded.
Ryan hadn't been able to take her mind off Xavier though. What was he doing now? He was very angry last night and he had that bad habit of not eating when he is angry. Did he eat or did he leave with an empty stomach?
Selena shook her head. No, she thought, I cannot think like this. He will be just fine. He doesn't need me, he made it very clear.
"Sel, you go lead the training after breakfast, I have some work to do," Connor said.
"I'm not really feeling well today. Just ask Roy. They'll be able to handle it one day." Selena saw how Ryan's expression fell and she remembered what Connor had told her the previous day, she then added, "I will take care of the training from tomorrow."
She really wasn't feeling comfortable, that wasn't an excuse. An uneasy feeling took over her comfort. Something was wrong. It felt like something terrible was going to happen. Selena got up from the table and started going up the stairs.
While on the stairs, her head had started hurting, it felt like someone was hitting her head with a hammer. She clutched her hair and sat down on one of the steps. But it didn't stop, in fact, the pain intensified even more. Her hands still clutching her hair as she leaned against the wall.
The pain had increased so much that she thought of mind linking Ryan or Connor. But when the pain lessened for a moment, she didn't link them. She pulled herself together after a minute or two and stood up before walked up the few more steps.
She had started sweating now. A slight stomach ache had started now and her throat felt itchy. She tried coughing to try and ease her throat but it only became worse. She coughed a few more times before suddenly stopping.
Her hand which covered her mouth felt wet.
She slowly moved it away from her mouth but before she could take a look at it, her eyes turned dizzy and she stumbled on the steps, losing her balance. She gasped as she went crashing down the stairs.
As she reached the very bottom, she heard footsteps rushing to her and opened her eyes a tiny bit.
Connor.
"Oh my God!" he whispered, shocked.
Selena looked down at the floor, only to see blood, a lot of it. And then she blacked out.
