ODETTE
Ever since I revealed my secret to Sterling this past weekend, I knew it was only a matter of time before everyone else found out.
The first step was to call Tyler, then Reece. I needed to gauge Tylerâs reaction before I asked Reece for help. Sterling was rightâReece was the person to help me. He had a legal background and would ensure I understood my rights.
Iâd been delaying the call to Tyler all morning. I knew he was going to explode, but it was now or never.
Taking a deep breath, I pressed the phone icon next to his name. The phone rang three times before he answered.
âOdette?â
âHi.â
âIâm glad you called me. I missed you.â
~I can do this. I can do this.~
âDonât try to sweet-talk me. Iâm calling for a reason.â
âIâm sorry that I lost my temper,â Tyler said, trying to win me over.
âTyler, what happened is in the past; weâre over. I called to tell you something important, so listen.â
âOK.â He sighed.
âIâm pregnant.â
âAre you sure?â
âYes, a doctor confirmed it.â
âAre you taking it away from me?â Tyler asked, accusingly.
âI want full custody,â I snapped.
âYou canât do that.â
âI can, and I will. Youâve hit me in anger multiple times, and Iâm afraid youâll do the same to the baby.â
âIâve been getting help,â he admitted.
âI still donât trust you.â
I was not falling for this. Heâd told me in the past that he would get help. I had to think about the baby now.
âIâll fight you for this. I deserve to be a part of this childâs life.â
âAnd this child deserves to grow up without an abusive father.â
âYouâll be hearing from my lawyer, Etta.â Tyler hung up without giving me a chance to respond.
He handled it better than I thought he would, but now I was terrified that Iâd lose this child before it was even born.

âGood afternoon. How can I help you?â the lady at the desk asked.
âIâm here to see Reece Meyer.â
âDo you have an appointment?â
âNo, but Iâm a family friend. My name is Odette Hart.â
âIâm sorry, but Mr. Meyer is extremely busy. Youâll need to make an appointment,â she said as she started typing again.
âCan you tell him itâs important?â
The secretary was about to refuse, but Reece walked out of the conference room and saw me.
âIs everything okay?â he asked.
âI need to talk to you.â
âOkay. Follow me to my office.â
His office was neat and tidy. His files were in order and not scattered all over his desk. He had one photo; it was a picture of him and his mother.
âIf you donât have a minute, I can come back.â I was secretly hoping he would say he was too busy.
âNonsense, it must be important if you showed up.â
âIt is, and I need your helpâ¦â Telling Reece was harder than I thought. A lump was forming in my throat, and I found myself not wanting to tell him because I didnât want him to pity me or be angry with me.
âI need your help with a custody issue.â
âOkayâ¦Iâm already a little confused.â
âLast week, when I fell, I found out I was pregnant.â
âWow.â He took a deep breath and slid his hand down his face.
âIâm assuming you told your ex?â
âYes, and he wants custody. It sounded like he wanted joint custody until I told him no.â
âI hate to say no, Etta, but this is a conflict of interest for me. I canât take you on as a client.â
âOh, I guess that makes sense.â
âLet me finish. I can ask one of my partners to help you. Itâs not going to be easy unless you have proof of the abuse, and even then, it may not play out in your favor, especially if heâs getting help.â
I didnât know what came over me. Without warning, I burst into tears. I wanted to say it was the pregnancy hormones, but at this point, I thought I was just overwhelmed.
âHey, donât cry,â Reece said as he left his desk to sit next to me.
âMy life is such a mess, and Iâm asking you to get involved, and itâs not fair to you.â
âI would do anything to help you. You mean a lot to me, and you being pregnant with some jerkâs baby isnât going to change that. This isnât ideal, but we will learn to deal with this. Itâs a bump in the road.â
âHow can you be so kind and still want to be with me?â
âIâm not a jerk, and I like children, so itâs not a dealbreaker. I just hated that you didnât tell me right away.â
âI was freaking out. I told Sterling on Saturday, and then we had a bonding experience over how messed up our love lives are,â I said.
âAre you free tonight?â he asked.
I sniffled and nodded.
âGood, I want to take you out to dinner,â he said.
