"Good" Duncan smiled in satisfaction.
"-but if you tell Xavier then I will be paying a visit to your mum" Duncan said sympathetically.
"That's blackmail" I scowled.
"I call it returning the favour" Duncan smiled.
I rolled my eyes at him. "Ok so I do what you say and you don't kill me. If I tell Xavier then you will blackmail-" I started.
"Return the favour" Duncan interrupted.
"Sorry, return the favour of taking a visit to my mother" I finished.
Duncan put the knife away. "Correct. And you cannot tell anyone else especially not Chantelle. I still remain as Chantelle's boyfriend. Are we clear?'
So this whole time Duncan didn't like Chantelle? Duncan just wanted to kill her to get revenge. What a complete asshole.
"Fine" I spat.
I knew what I had to do. Somehow warn Xavier, keep my mum safe and break up Chantelle's and Duncan's relationship.
Just as I opened the door Duncan grabbed my arm making me turn around to face him.
"I added my contact on your phone and whatever I text, no matter what it is, you do as I say" He warned me in a deadly serious tone.
"I know" I replied and turned around, walking, well speed walking to my car.
ÃÃ
I can't face Chantelle like this. Knowing that everything is a lie. Well except for Chantelle's love for Duncan.
I went downstairs and passed Xavier, who grabbed my arm keeping me from walking.
"Yes?" I asked with a fake smile.
I didn't know what to say to him yet. I hadn't prepared for this.
"Phone" Xavier held his arm out.
I gave him my phone and he started undoing the case.
"If your looking for the tracking device it's not in there" I whispered aware that Chantelle could hear us if I spoke too loud.
"That was just bait-" Xavier started, getting out another device "- sound device, connects with my other sound device"
I scrunched my face up in confusion "Wait so you heard everything that was said?"
Xavier spared me a glance. "Pretty much"
"So you tell me whenever he wants to meet me, ok?" Xavier gave me my phone back.
He turned to leave, his way of saying end of conversation.
"Wait Xavier" I started as he turned around.
"You know now, and I know somehow he'll find out that you know. You know what he said, he'll kill my mum" I tried making sense of it.
He gave me a small nod. "Trust me, your mum will be fine" he simply replied before turning back around.
I quickly jumped in, hoping I was wrong. "Did you really kill his parents?"
He stopped walking as there was silence. "I kill people Avery. It's just what I do and there's no other way to put it. If your looking for any redeeming qualities or emotions don't. Your not going to find anything." He answered, walking off.
I stared at his retreating figure speechless.
He's a bad person and I know that. I know what he does, he kills people for a living.
And I can't seem to wrap my head around the fact that I accept that. That I know that and I'm still here.
So does that make me any better than him?
ÃÃ
I grabbed my books and hummed a random answer when Chantelle asked a question. These past few days I had been a wreck. Always on edge and constantly worrying.
"Is everything alright?" I asked facing Chantelle who has been quiet for the last 5 minutes. She stared down at her phone looking rather confused before looking up to me.
"Duncan can't make it to the date tonight because he has to take care of something" Chantelle sighed.
I gave her a sincere look. "Honey this guy keeps bailing on you and prioritises other stuff over you. Please end this relationship before he truly breaks your heart".
I've been trying to get to Chantelle, making sure to be subtle yet she's very stubborn. But I'm making progress and it seems to be working.
She looked at the ground with a conflicted look. "Yeah your probably right"
Speaking of Duncan, I haven't seen him all day. He hasn't been at school today. He's probably sick. Or planning out how to kill Xavier.
I felt my phone vibrate as a message popped up. It was from Duncan.
Meet me at the park at 6pm with Xavier. Don't be late or I won't hesitate to kill you both. Otherwise say bye to your mom -D
I re-read the message a couple of times before forwarding the message to Xavier. So thats why Duncan can't make it to his date. I was right.
"Is something wrong?" Chantelle asked staring at me rather worried.
"No, everythings great" I replied putting on a fake smile. Way to go Avery. Way to make it sound normal.
Chantelle stared at me a little longer before playing on her phone.
I'll be there with Xavier, don't worry -A
I sent the message and powered off my phone not wanting any distractions.
The bell rang so I sat down next to Chantelle and started working on the worksheets. Suddenly the door swung open and in came Duncan, with no books in his hand.
He looked around the class and smiled in satisfaction when he saw me before talking to the teacher.
"Yes?" The teacher asked.
Duncan glanced at me before talking. "I need to borrow Avery" with that everybody's heads turned towards me.
Thank god. I get to miss class. Yet leaving class with this psycho wasn't high on my list.
"No you cannot borrow Avery, she is in class and you should be too" too much disappointment the teacher declined.
Dammit. Oh well.
Duncan gave the teacher a note. The teacher eyed the note suspiciously before reading it.
"Avery you are dismissed from class" she said handing the note back to me.
I grabbed my books as Chantelle gave me a suspicious glance. I gave her a shrug letting her know I had no idea what was happening.
"I'm very sorry about.. what happened" the teacher said quietly sympathetically.
My face scrunched up in confusion before looking at Duncan who was smirking.
I nodded with a sad smile. "Me too"
Not knowing what she was talking about I just nodded sadly and left glaring at Duncan.
I made my way out of the room and shut the door.
I had to be normal with Duncan. Knowing him, he'd know something was up and things would take a deadly turn.
"What the hell was that?" I asked angrily.
"Nothing" he simply replied.
"Wait, were are we going?" I asked as Duncan got into the driver's side of his car.
"Starbucks" Duncan replied which made me sigh and get in. You can't argue with Starbucks.
I opened up the note and read it over a few times. "My dog died?" I said in disbelief.
Duncan chuckled at my expression. "That is the most lamest excuse that I have ever heard" I groaned.
"Well what else did you want me to say?" He asked.
"I don't know, something that isn't a dog, because I don't own one" I suggested.
Duncan pulled up but it wasn't Starbucks. It was a street near where I live.
"This isn't Starbucks" I stared at Duncan.
"I know but it was the only way to get you to come" Duncan replied.
I was about to argue but he was right. Starbucks is the only reason why I came.
"What do you want to talk about?" I asked hoping that he didn't find out about how Xavier knows.
"About how it's going to work tonight"
ÃÃ
How was this long chapter? It's getting heated with Duncan and Avery, am I right? Two more chapters to go and both of them have a lot of drama, so hold on for the wait. Updating in two more weeks.
