I slowly looked up and made eye contact with Matthew and cringed.
"Hey, Matt!" Kate said while walking out with my sub. She paused "What happened here?"
"Hey...stranger, " I said ignoring Kate, and slowly looked up at Matthew.
"Rachel right?" he asked. I shook my head
"Well Rachel I think my shirt drank your lemonade," he said slightly chuckling.
"Wait a minute hold up you two know each other?" Kate asked
We both looked at her and nodded.
"She bumped into me earlier." He said
"He's the wall?" Kate asked
Oh crap. Now they were both looking at me
"Wall?" Matthew asked.
Kate noticed what she said and tried to change the subject. "I'm gonna go get the mop, "
"Wall?" Matthew asked again
I looked up at him. "It was a figure of speech"
"And you compared me to a wall?"
"I can explain...you aren't a wall...you just felt like a wall and then you know my brain...and well...I..." I looked around trying to change the subject. I was starting to shake and I felt hot as the adrenaline pumped throughout my body.
"Hey hey hey calm down. Deep breaths. I'm not mad I promise. I was just confused for a little that's all." He said while placing a hand on my shoulder
"I...I'll pay for the shirt and anything else I damaged. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."
"Calm down it's okay and you're not paying for anything. I didn't like this shirt anyway. I have a jacket in my bag I'll just change when we get this all cleaned up why don't you go sit down?"
"I have the mop," Kate said.
"I have two hands. I'll clean up." I said hurriedly before Matthew had the chance to beat me to it.
I grabbed the mop and the bucket and started wiping.
"I'll go change," Matthew said.
"I'm sorry," Kate said as Matthew disappeared around the corner. "Sometimes I talk before I think."
"It's okay I do that too," I said while wiping up the last bit of puddle spilled from my juice cup. I put the mop in the bucket while kate set up the caution sign.
"Where does this go?" I asked
"I got it, " she said taking the bucket from me and went back into the back room.
Just then Matthew walked out with his jacket on and a bag in his hand which I'm guessing is the shirt.
"I'm sorry again. I'll pay--"
"It's okay and you won't pay because mistakes happen even if it's made more than once with the same person in one day," he said trying to crack a smile out of me
He did get a small smile out of me. Not the smile I'm guessing he wanted because I was still nervous but a smile none the less.
"Alright let's try that again." kate said coming back to the cash register. "Oh hey, Matt didn't see ya there!"
Matt smiled shaking his head but still went along with the script "Hey Kate how ya doing?"
"I'm good great actually what would you like me to get ya?"
"You know me, the regular."
"Alright, one large coffee ten creams no sugar coming up."
"I'll pay -"
"Here you go." We both said at the same time. Matthew looked at me and shook his head muttering something under his breath.
"Here and keep the change," he said giving Kate a $5 bill.
"Thank you, sir."
Kate looked at me hesitating a bit. "You want another lemonade?"
"No, I'm gonna just call it a night or evening or whatever," I said while getting my stuff. "Thanks for the sandwich, "
"Don't thank me you paid for it," she said.
"I'll walk her to her dorm," Matthew said taking his coffee from Kate.
"Well, it shouldn't be hard to find it because she lives with me," Kate said
"You guys are roommates?" Matt asked
"No, we're schoolmates," Kate said rolling her eyes.
"You just couldn't go a day without your sarcasm can you?"
"Hey, it's not my fault common sense isn't always common I was just helping you out."
"You disgust me"
"Yeah yeah, whatever you love me anyway."
"Are you two dating?" I asked cutting in. They both looked at me like I just prepared the worst meal in the world and fed it to them.
"Rachel I love you I really do but the next time you insult me your dress will be drinking lemonade...I'm kidding." Kate said laughing a little.
I continued to stare at the both of them.
"I know right? Even her jokes suck" Matthew said.
"You know what Matthew James Mconner you can suck my-"
"ASSETS" I yelled.
"What?" they both asked
"Never mind," I said shaking my head. "I'm gonna go now before I have to watch you both drink lemonade."
"Like I said I'll walk you," Matthew said
Just then the bell chimed signaling someone entering the shop.
"Hey what can I get ya?" Kate said going back into character. Something told me this wasn't gonna be the last time I had to hear these two bicker.
