Matt
I stood there like I was in a courtroom awaiting my sentence. One minute goes by then another then another and with each passing minute, my confidence level lowered and lowered.
"Matthew, " she said before pausing "Matt I'm not gonna lie and say I'm not interested in you either because I am but before I answer you answer me this first. Are you a Christian...do you believe in Jesus?"
Of all the things I was expecting that question was not on the list.
" I believe that there's a higher being and that being is God but I'm not tied down to any religion so Christianity is not a part of my life," I said.
Her eyes dimmed a bit before she took a deep breath " Would you consider converting to Christianity?"
I answer honestly "I'm not sure"
Another minute goes by before she speaks again
"I'm sorry I can't. It's not because I don't think you're a great guy you are but Jesus is a big part of my life and yes it's just one date but a lot can happen on a date and before things can go any further it's better to leave things the way they are right now so later it doesn't hurt so much."
We looked at each other for what feels like an eternity.
"I tried, " I said giving her a weak smile. She smiled back before playing with the string on her sweater. "I can't convince you to change your mind can I?"
She smiled again before saying "I'm sorry but I'm afraid I don't compromise when it comes to Jesus"
"I understand, I don't expect you to, " I said before grabbing my bag. "We're still friends though right?"
"Of course" she replied.
"Let me walk you back?" I asked.
"Thank you, " she said.
The walk back to her dorm takes about 10 minutes on a normal day but today it felt like 30. My heart was exploding as disappointment started to fully take its course. I didn't know if I was happy or sad that she stuck to her beliefs. I'm happy because in a sense she's showing me her worth and she knows who it's found in but I'm sad because I really like her and I wanted her to give me a chance...give us a chance. She pulled out her keys before turning to face me.
"Thank you for walking me back, " she said.
"Thank you for taking a walk with me, " I replied.
She nervously looked around before setting her things down and hugging me. I squeezed back even harder taking in this moment before we pulled away.
"I'll see you around, " she said opening her door.
"Goodbye Rachel, " I said before she closed the door behind her.
I stood there staring at the door before closing my eyes. I asked her a question it's not like we were dating or anything so why does it hurt so much? Why do I feel like this? I stood there for another minute or so hoping that she'll open the door in hopes to find me and tell me she changed her mind but that doesn't happen and I didn't expect it to. A boy could dream, right?
Turning around I made my way to my dorm room before slumping down on my bed.
About an hour later my roommate Josh comes in grinning from ear to ear before stopping to look at me.
"You do know that Sleeping Beauty was a girl right?" he asked
I gave him a look that asked what he was talking about.
"Then why do you look like you're the one waiting for princess charming to wake you up with a kiss?"
I groaned "Not now Josh"
Like always he ignores me.
