CHRISTINE Iâve been a wedding planner for a long time. Iâm the best in the game and Iâm not about to let a young upstart challenge for my crown. Thereâs one person who I come up against more and more and itâs her. Viola. Iâve lost a lot of business to her. Iâm still doing great numbers and growing but I could grow so much faster if she wasnât fishing in my pond.
Who the hell does she think she is? I know this business inside out. There isnât that much to it when youâre an expert. Itâs easy to pinpoint the weak points in any wedding plannerâs business. Hell, theyâre the same weak spots as mine and that makes it even easier to take her down. Her assistant didnât want to take my offer but thatâs okay. Itâs just one point of attack.
When Iâm finished, theyâll both be crawling to me.
I look at the brochure I took from their booth and start to formulate my plan of attack. I boot up my laptop and am soon on Violaâs website looking for the information I need. I canât find what Iâm looking for so I try another angle. I go to the gallery and testimonials.
Bingo! I make notes of the information I am looking for and then close the site.
I pick up the phone and dial Violaâs office number.
The phone is answered promptly.
âHi, this is Mrs. Anderson.â
âYes, Mrs. Anderson. How can I help you? This is Jessica.â
The assistant. âWeâre having a party soon for Mr. Andersonâs office and he asked me about the band that we had at the wedding. I thought Iâd give you a call and find out if I could contact them to see if theyâre available. Would it be possible to give me their number?â
âSure, Mrs. Anderson. Iâd be only too happy to. Hold on while I get the details.â
I wait a few moments and then Jessica comes on the line again. âHere you go, Mrs. Anderson.â
She gives me the contact name and number for Steve from the band called âPlasteredâ. I thank her and hang up.
I smile and mentally congratulate myself. Itâs that easy.
When Steve answers the phone I arrange to meet him to discuss hiring the band for a party.
Steve is already waiting when I enter the coffee shop. He recognizes me from the clothes I told him Iâd be wearing and waves to me. I cross to the booth and slide in opposite him. I feel his eyes appraise me as I sit down. Iâve worn a short skirt and a tight, white cotton blouse that accentuates my breasts. Itâs unbuttoned just far enough to reveal a glimpse of my bra which is visible through the soft material of the blouse anyway. I shake Steveâs hand.
âHow can I help you?â Steve asks.
âI have a confession, Steve,â I reply conspiratorially.
âWhatâs that?â Steve asks, intrigued.
âWell, when I said I need a band for a party, I wasnât being totally honest. Iâd like your band to play for all my parties unless my clients insist otherwise.â
âAll your parties?â Steve frowns. âI donât understand.â
âIâm a wedding planner, just like Viola who you work with regularly.â
Steve nods as the penny drops. âWell, you know we go back a long way. I mean Iâd be happy to support you when you have a wedding if we donât have a wedding booked with Viola.â
I smile and shake my head. âI thought youâd say that Steve but I have to say Iâm looking for a reversal of that proposed arrangement. You play all my weddings and fit her in where you can. Iâll pay you one and a half times what she pays you per wedding.â
Steve looks at me and says nothing. I can tell his mind is working overtime and I can tell where itâs headed so I cut it off.
âThis is a one-time deal. Right here, right now. Thereâs no going to Viola and bargaining with her. Iâm not into horse-trading.â
âWell, what about if I call the band and discuss it with them?â Steve asks.
âWhy would they care? A gigâs a gig. Doesnât matter who you play for or where you play. Right?â
Steve sighs. Heâs tempted but his loyalty is still to Viola. âWhenâs the first gig?â
âSaturday.â
âSaturday? Thatâs two days away!â
âAnd?â
âWeâre booked for a wedding with Viola. We canât just drop her at such short notice. Itâs not ethical.â
âLook,â I say hardening my tone. âYou guys have a good name out there. Itâs why I came to you first. But youâre not the only band. Iâll say this too, and I donât mean to sound like Iâm bragging but when it comes to wedding planners, I. Am. The. Best. So, you can decide if youâre going to be loyal to number two or three or whatever the hell Viola is, or you can come along with me. Success breeds success. You know that as well as I do.â
Steve ponders my words. I can tell heâs not happy. Then he shakes his head. âWe can start next week. Not this weekend. I just canât do that to Viola or her client.â
I look at Steve. Heâs serious. âWell, I guess Iâll have to find another band then,â I say and begin to gather my things to leave.
âNo deal?â Steve asks.
âI offered you a deal,â I say firmly.
âA dealâs only a deal where both parties are happyâ
I pause. âAnd what wouldnât make you happy about the deal? One weekend? One weekend when you could be earning one and a half times what you get now every weekend from now on?â
âYou know, I think this isnât so much as our band being paid more as it is a personal issue between you and Viola. Am I right? Because if thatâs the case, the band isnât going to make a difference. If you donât have what she offers sheâs always going to be one ahead of you...â
â...and pray tell me, Steve, what does she have that I donât have?â
âAside from the band, sheâs got a great assistant...â
â...got one,â I say.
â...rapport with clients...â
âGot it,â I add.
â...Wedding Whisperer...â
âA what?â I ask frowning.
Steve smiles. âSee. Youâre not close to what she offers.â
Cold Feet ï¤Chapter 1 Thrill Of The Hunt ï¤Chapter 97: 98 Mistake divorce: Please marry me again ï¤Chapter 113: Diary I ignore his remark. âWhat is a Wedding Whisperer?â
âA person who encourages the bride or groom to work through their fear of getting married at the last minute. You know, âcold feetâ?â He makes inverted commas in the air with his fingers.
I sit back. âOh, that! Who doesnât have that?â I lie. âI just donât call it that.â
âWell, I have to be going. Itâs been a pleasure to meet you but I guess we wonât be doing business,â Steve says.
âWell, remember I did try to help.â
âThank you for that,â Steve says as I stand. He stands too and we shake hands. I leave the coffee shop and he sits down again and takes out his cellphone. I know heâs going to try to horse trade anyway. Maybe Iâll let him do it. Iâll see how I feel later. Right now, Iâm more interested in the âwedding whispererâ concept that he mentioned to me.
I think of the cancellations Iâve had when the wedding has been about to kick off in church. Not many but it happens. Itâs ingenious and Iâm even more adamant to shut Violaâs business down than before.
