Even though I tried to talk her out of it, Lakyn got out of her car and helped me carry the plants her grandmother gave me into my house. I tried not to look at Blaze as I walked past him, but it was hard not to.
I offered Lakyn a cup of coffee not to be rude, but I was happy when she turned it down. Walking her to the front door, I thanked her for tonight and stood at the door, watching as she drove away.
Blaze was still standing outside, but he wasnât watching her. He was watching me. âBlaze Iâ¦â Looking up at the sky as a bolt of lightning came down way too close for my comfort, I shook my head. âCome inside.â
Turning, I walked away from my open door, hoping that he would follow. It wasnât until I was sitting down on my couch that I heard my front door shut. I could hear his footsteps coming down the hall. My eyes focused on the coffee table in front of me.
I knew Blaze was in the room, but he had yet to speak to me. âYouâre mad.â
âOh, Iâm not mad. Iâm pissed.â
I swallowed, still not looking up. âIâm just trying to help you, Blaze. I knew you wouldnâtâ¦â
âYou ran away from my sister. Do you not trust her?â
I looked up. âI do. I just knew she would stop me. Iâ¦â
âWhere did you go tonight?â
I took a deep breath. âTo Lakynâs grandmothersâ¦â
âWhat?â
âI had to find out if she had told anyone else. I was just trying to helpâ¦â
âRiley, do you not understand the danger you could have put yourself in? I canât just pop where you are without you calling out to me. We arenât bonded strong enough yet.â
âI was fine,â I said. âI thought I saw you. In the road, on our way home.â
âYou did,â he gritted out.
âWhat? I thought you saidâ¦â
âI tried to find you and I came close, but I couldnât hold it.â
âBlaze,â I said, standing up. âI was ok. I would have called you if anything was off.â
âBy the time you knew something was off, it would be too late. You take unnecessary risk, Riley. You put not only me, but yourself in danger.â
âShe isnât bad,â I said. âShe offered to come ward my house, but I refused. Sheâ¦â
âAnd what if she sees right through you, Riley?â
I looked down. âIâm sorry. I just thoughtâ¦.â
âYou thought wrong.â
Hearing the anger in his voice, I looked up. âI wonât apologize for trying to save you.â
Blazeâs eyes met mine as I walked forward, stopping just in front of him. Reaching out, I placed my hand on his chest. His clothes were cold and wet. âYouâre wet.â I said simply.
He looked down at me, arching his brow, âand you arenât?â
âI didnât stand in the rain like an idiot, I just got a little wet bringing the plants in.â
Blaze rolled his eyes at me. âWhy didnât you tell me?â
I looked up at him, âyou would have said no.â
âAnd for a damn good reason Riley.â Grabbing me by the shoulders, he looked down. âYou donât take risks like that.â
âI was fine,â I said, looking up at him.
âYou are mine, little witch. You donât take unnecessary risk like that.â
âI was trying to help you,â I said, knowing that my reasoning sounded stupid. He was right. I had taken an enormous risk that could have ended badly for both of us.
Blaze looked up, sighing. âRiley, I canât protect you if I donât know where you are. I canât hold our connection. I canât do anything until you call me. If someone takes you that is knowledgeable about demons, they will know that. They will count on that. When you do call me, and trust me Riley, you will. It will be too late for both of us.
I looked down, feeling tears sting my eyes. âIâm sorry. I knew you would be mad, but Iâ¦it was stupid of me.â
Blaze let out a breath, running his hands from my shoulder down to my waist, pulling me into him. âPetra is pissed at you.â
I nodded, gladly accepting his warmth as I lay my head on his still wet chest. âShe should be. I lied to her.â
âSheâs pissed at you because Iâm pissed at her for losing you.â Blaze said, resting his chin on my shoulder.
âYou didnât yell at her, did you?â
âI did,â Blaze said matter-of-factly.
âWell, you need to call her and apologize.â I said, looking up at him.
He snorted, âI donât apologize. She will be just fine. You are the one who needs to apologize to her.â He stood up straight looking down at me, âwell did you at least find anything else out on your idiotic quest?â
I shook my head. âNot really. I donât think Lakynâs grandmother has a clue. I donât think she has reached out to any of her family.â Looking up at Blaze, I paused. âEven if she called, they wouldnât know it was you.â
âKyler is paranoid,â Blaze said. âThe first thing he would do is come check on me and when he found me gone, all hell would break loose. The man is unhinged.â He looked down. âWhich is why I need you to stop doing stupid shit.â
âOk already,â I said, shoving at him.
He grabbed my arms, looking amused. âYou had me out in the rain, Riley.â
âYou could have waited on the porch,â I pointed out. When he looked down at me, I shrugged. âI mean, at least you looked hot standing in the rain. The pissed off expression kinda killed it for me, though.â
Blaze reached out, putting his hand on the back of my neck, and pulled me forward. âReally? cause thatâs not what I got from the look you gave me?â
âI was actually trying to avoid looking at you because you looked like you wanted to strangle me.â I said, looking up at him.
Blaze lifted his other hand, wrapping it around my throat with his other hand as if he was choking me. He tightened his grip, but not enough to hurt or cut off my oxygen. âTrust me, little witch, if I decided to choke you, youâd like it.â
I lifted my brows, surprised how our entire conversation had suddenly swung a completely new direction in the matter of seconds. âI donât think thatâs what you were thinking when I got out of the car.â
âYou donât know what I was thinking when you got out of the car.â Blaze squeezed my neck tighter. âDonât you ever run away from me again.â
âI didnât run away from you,â I pointed out. âI ran away from your sister.â
Blaze frowned, his eyes darkening before my very eyes. âIâm trying my hardest to be gentle with you because of your past Riley, donât make me show you who I really am.â
I swallowed. âI want to know you. The real you.â
Dropping his hands, Blaze laughed. âNo, you donât, little witch. Youâd hate me if you knew the real me.â
âAnd you care if I hate you?â
He looked up, âapparently so. Go take a shower, get into some dry clothes.â
âWhat about you?â I asked.
He arched his brow. âIs that an invitation?â
I opened my mouth, but then closed it. âAre you still mad at me?â I finally asked.
He shrugged, walking up to me and twisting my hair around his fists. âThe sooner you realize that even though you may command me with that little mark on your hand that I own you, the better.â
Looking up at him, I swallowed. âI could send you away.â
âYou wonât,â he said confidently.
I took a breath. âDo you want to own me or possess me?â
Blaze tugged at my hair, âboth little witch. I told you I would be your downfall. If that is why you are so keen on helping me escape Wumbert, I honestly couldnât blame you.â
âI donât know why I want to help you,â I admitted. âMaybe saving you will help me save myself.â
Blaze looked down at me, âyou are a fool if you think I care.â
âYou said our bond wasnât strong enough for you to find me. How do we make it stronger?â
Blaze laughed, tugging my hair. âYou would have to submit to me fully.â
I looked up at him, âyou tell me Iâm stronger than I know, but then tell me you want me to submit to you?â
âI never said I wanted you to submit to me,â Blaze said. âYou asked a question, and I answered it.â
âThatâs how you break people?â
Blaze released my hair, âitâs what I do Riley. Donât forget who I am. Just because I fucked you doesnât mean I have feelings toward you.â
