It was unnaturally quiet as I came up to Dustin's and my houses. I slowed my pace and slowly came to stop. There weren't any lights on at my house. But Will was supposed to be home, and there was no way he'd go to bed early.

I walked up the steps and onto the porch. When the steps squeaked I jumped, my heart jumping into my throat. I giggled nervously at my actions. This was my own house, what was I afraid of? I went to open the door and found it locked. I paused, confused for a second. Why was the door locked? I shrugged and pulled out my key, opening the door and stepping in.

"Will?" I called into the quiet house. No answer.

I flipped on the hall light and slowly walked down it. I became aware that I was holding my breath when I let it out slowly. My heart was still pounding hard against my rib cage. I entered the kitchen and turned on the light, locating a note on the fridge door.

I picked it up and scanned it quickly, letting out a loud laugh. It was from Will, saying he was suddenly called on a job. No wonder all the lights were off. I chuckled to myself for a few more moments before remembering why I came.

I shut the kitchen light off and hurried down the hall, switching off the light there as well and locking the door. I shut it behind me and ran across the lawn to Dustin's house, which was dark as well. I knew his parents were out for the weekend. I knocked on the door and when no one answered I opened it myself and to my surprise it was unlocked and swung open.

I entered the house and ran my hands along the wall until I found a light switch. I turned it on and light flooded the room. I slowly started for the living room. The T.V was on, but the volume was off. I walked over to it and turned it off, my palms sweaty.

"Dustin?" Why was my voice shaking?

There was no answer, so I tried a little louder. "Dustin?" Still no answer.

I made my way around the first floor of the house and still couldn't find him. I then started up the stairs to the second floor. I checked in the bathroom, and his parent's room, which were unoccupied. Finally I came to his bedroom.

I opened the door slowly, my breathing shallow. I closed my eyes and opened it fully, holding my breath, expecting someone, or something, to jump out at me. When nothing did I opened them. The room was completely empty.

I frowned and entered, not bothering to turn on the light. A clock flashed from the dresser, stuck on 12:00. Where was Dustin? I looked for traces of if he was recently here or not, but I couldn't find any.

A shrill, high-pitched wail filled my ears and I screamed, a hand flying to my heart. I whipped around, my hands in a defensive pose. Nothing was there. It took me a second to realize it was a cell phone. Dustin's. I ran over to his bed where his cell phone was flashing. The call was from Reilly.

I flipped it open, hitting the talk button and slowly putting it to my ear. An evil laugh came from it.

"Reilly?" I whispered, looking around the room alertly.

"Oh, Maddie, Maddie. You look so scared all by yourself."

Something bright came into the vision of the corner of my eye. I turned and realized it was a light. Coming from my room. At my house.

I snapped the phone shut and sprinted down the stairs, through the kitchen and finally out the door. I dashed across the yard, fumbling with the key to my house. In my haste I dropped it, and I spent a few frantic seconds trying to locate it in the grass. When my hand grasped the cool metal I stood up and ran up my steps, the squeak not even registering in my head and unlocked the door.

I didn't bother turning on any lights as I raced up the steps and to my bedroom. I paused and hesitated slightly outside the door before winging it open and bursting in. A gasp escaped my lips as a silhouette made itself visible in the dark room, the only light coming from the moon outside as it cast it's shine through my window.

"Dustin!"

"Yo," he responded with a grin, his face barely visible.

"You scared the hell out of me! Why didn't you come downstairs when I was here earlier? Didn't you hear me?"

"No, I must have been busy..."

"Busy?" I repeated, raising an eyebrow. "With what?"

Dustin didn't reply. He simply smirked.

"Oh, I know," I responded, smirking as well. "That thing you wanted to show me earlier?"

"Yeah," Dustin replied, his smirk growing wider. "It really is something."

"Well what is it? You said you would be at the party early. I was really worried when you didn't show," I told him, shaking my head with a sigh.

"Sorry. It took longer then expected," Dustin explained, still half-concealed by the moon.

"It's no problem. So are you going to show me?"

"Momentarily... I need a little help."

"With what?"

"Nothing you need to worry about," Dustin responded, still smirking.

"Dustin?"

"I need a little help," he said.

"You just said that," I told him, my frown deepening.

"I need a little help."

"Dustin?"

"I need... a little help." His breathing began to get faster.

"Dustin? What's wrong? Dustin!"

He hunched over, his breath coming in rasps. He groaned in pain, his fists clenched in tight balls, skin stretching against his bone.

"Dustin!" I cried, running over to him and putting a hand on his shoulder.

"Stay away!" he shouted, shoving me backwards.

I tumbled backwards a few steps, trying to gain my balance. A pair of cool, sturdy hands set me straight. Relief washed over me and I turned, expecting to see Damian, instead, a familiar smirking face met my gaze.

"R-Reilly!"

"Why Maddie, how nice of you to join us. You're just in time for the show," Reilly informed me with a wink.

"What's going on? What did you do to Dustin?" I demanded, wrenching away from Reilly's sturdy grasp.

"What makes you think I've done anything to my best friend?" Reilly questioned, frowning slightly as he went to stand next to Dustin and wrapped an arm over his shoulder.

Dustin shoved the arm away and staggered a few feet away from Reilly before collapsing onto his knees. I took a few steps towards him but he held out a hand to stop me.

"Stay away!" he ordered before crying out in agony again.

Reilly chuckled and I glared at him. "What did you do to him?"

"Nothing much," Reilly responded, crossing his arms and leaning against the wall. "You'll see in a few seconds anyways."

"Ugh," Dustin groaned, trying to push himself of the floor.

"Dustin!" I tried going over to him but Reilly stopped me, grabbing my wrist and twisting my arm backwards to make me immobile. I winced in pain.

"Hold on, you can go to him for a second. Let it just finish," Reilly murmured in my ear.

"Let what finish?"

"My, you sure do ask a lot of questions," Reilly commented, frowning. "Why don't you just shut up and watch. Ah, here it comes."

I turned my attention back to Dustin, who was still groaning and panting heavily. Suddenly he collapsed to the floor, lying motionlessly. I struggled to get out of Reilly's grasp, but all my efforts were fruitless. He was too strong.

"Huh," Reilly started, forcing me to walk over to Dustin with him. "Did it work?"

"Hey!" I cried as Reilly kicked Dustin over with his foot.

"Did I kill him?" Reilly questioned himself. "Maybe the drug was too potent."

My heart sunk. Dustin, dead? That was impossible. I stared at his motionless body, my eyes welling up with tears. There wasn't even the slightest rise or fall of his chest. But than Reilly's words registered.

"What drug?" I asked, my voice shaky.

"Well you see, I've been thinking over these past few months the best way to get Dustin back after he killed my brother-"

"You're still hung up over that?" I asked with disbelief in my voice. "Get over it!"

"Don't interrupt me," Reilly warned in a growl, pulling back my hair.

"Ow!" I cried, struggling to break free from him again. "Let go!"

"Let me finish my story," Reilly offered, pulling my arms tighter. "Like I was saying, after all these months of thinking and plotting. I thought about what would hurt him the most. I've thought about killing his friends, I've thought about killing his family and all that fun stuff."

"You sick bastard," I spat, glaring at the darkness in front of me.

Reilly chuckled. "Sick? No. Just merely curious. Though you are catching on."

I rolled my eyes. What nonsense was he spouting out now?

"That's when it hit me. What if I turned him into what he hated the most?"

My eyes widened as the answer entered my mind without hesitation: Vampire. I tuned my head to try to see Reilly, but couldn't see past my shoulder. I swallowed hard. "Y-you changed Dustin i-into a v-vampire?"

"Bingo. But that wasn't fun enough. For a while now I've been working on this drug that changes people into rabid vampires. I thought this would be a good way to lead attacks on other groups of vampires. Rabid vampires would have no mind. Of course, they would still have their mind, physically. So I decided Dustin would be the best test subject."

"Dustin," I moaned, my eyes filling with tears again. "Dustin!"

Reilly chuckled. "You're so cute. You're so worried about him."

"Because he's my best friend! He has been my best friend since we were little!" I shouted at Reilly, wishing I could turn around and punch him in the face.

"Yeah, but shouldn't you be a bit more worried about yourself? With the situation you're in?"

"What are you going to do?" I responded, tensing up.

"Me? Nothing. But I'm not so sure about Dustin. I don't know what he will do if he wakes up. Oh, speak of the devil!"

Dustin was stirring now. His eyes were still shut, and his face expressionless as he effortlessly got to his feet. I watched him warily as he turned his back to me and stretched. Reilly let go of me and I brought my arms to my front, rubbing at a sore spot.

"Dustin?" I asked timidly, lowering my arms. "Are you okay?"

I screamed as Dustin turned around. His face was twisted into a forbidding smirk that I had never seen on his face before. His eyes were a brilliant crimson red, shining like blood in the moonlight. His smirk twisted into a sneer and he bared his teeth at me. No, he bared his fangs at me.
