I let out a deep sigh and scanned the treetops as the cool breeze stroked my face. Responsibility weighed upon my shoulders, and the tension with Warrick wasnât helping.
We were tasked with making sure the pack was safe, tracking the retreat of Orionâs forces, but my mind wandered.
âPiper,â Warrick said the second he was alongside me, where I was bent near a covered path.
His tone was light, almost too casual. âYouâve been quiet.â
âIâm focused,â I replied shortly, not looking at him.
âFocused?â He gave a soft laugh, the sound low and smooth, an attempt to lighten the mood. âIt looks more like brooding.â
I shot him a glare. âThis isnât a joke, Warrick. Lives are at stake, and weâre standing on the edge of chaos.â
The humor fell from his face. âI know that, Piper. Iâm trying to make things easier.â
âEasier?â I interrupted, my frustration spilling over. âYou think cracking jokes and acting like nothing happened will fix everything?â
His jaw tightened. âIâm trying, Piper. But maybe you donât want this to be fixed.â
I turned away, not wanting to delve into the mess of emotions his words stirred.
We continued deeper into the forest until I came upon something unusual: a cluster of boulders partially covering a hollowedâout tree. âOver here,â I called out.
We searched the hiding place and opened it to reveal a cache of weapons, maps, and documents. My heart quickened as I fingered through them.
âThese are plans,â I whispered, spreading a map across the ground. âTheyâre targeting our divisions.â
âWhat do you mean?â Warrick leaned over my shoulder, his face darkening.
âThey know about our weaknesses,â I said. âThe conflicts, the mistrust theyâre planning to exploit.â
Behind us, a voice cut off Warrick before he could answer. âImpressive find.â
I turned to see Rowan approaching, arms crossed. âI didnât expect to see you here.â
âI was following a lead,â he said, dropping to his knees beside me. âBut this⦠this changes things.â
Rowan peered at the documents, his perception helping me assemble the plan. For the first time in a while, I felt a sliver of confidence.
âYouâve still got it, Piper,â he said with a small smile.
Before I could utter a word, Warrickâs voice cut through the moment like a knife. âOf course, Rowanâs here to save the day.â
âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â Rowan asked, an eyebrow arched.
Warrickâs frustration boiled over. âIt means youâve got your hands in everything. First, itâs Lila, now Piper. Whatâs next? Aurora?â
Rowanâs face clouded. âWatch your mouth, Warrick. Just because you are insecure doesnât mean you can make baseless accusations.â
âInsecure?â Warrick took a step closer, his fists clenched. âYou think youâre some kind of saint? Youâre just a manipulative womanizer.â
âAnd you are a jealous fool,â Rowan shot back. âMaybe if you treated Piper with respect, she wouldnât be secondâguessing your every move.â
âEnough!â I shouted, pushing myself between them. âThis isnât about you two. We have more important things to deal with.â
