Rowan stiffened, eyes unyielding. âWe were talking, Warrick. Thatâs all.â
âTalking?â Warrick jeered, taking a threatening step closer. âIt didnât look like just talking to me.â
âWarrick, stop,â I said as I got up to my feet, but he didnât hear
me.
âYouâve been sniffing around her for weeks,â Warrick growled low, his fists clenched. âYou think I donât see it? You think I donât know what youâre trying to do?â
âWarrick, thatâs enough,â Rowan said, firm and controlled.
âOh, now youâre telling me what to do?â Warrick sneered, stepping right into Rowanâs space. âYou think youâre better than me? You think you can just take her.
Warrick is older than Rowan, and that made him look a bit bigger and intimidating. But I and Rowan were just age grades.
âIâm not trying to take anyone,â Rowan said over him, his voice. rising. He threw a glance my way and I pursed my lips. And he continued, âBut perhaps if you were treating her with the respect she deserves, youâd not feel so threatened.â
Murmurs stirred across, all glancing between them in the corridor.
âRespect?â Warrick spat. âHow dare you speak of respect.â

âOh, then cease acting the jealous fool,â was all Rowan returned. I gulped, I canât seem to find the strength to go out there and somehow ease this tension.
âEnough!â Auroraâs voice cut through at last, and she stepped. between them, tall. âThat is enough. Both of you.â
Warrick let his glare flick to Rowan one more time, chest heaving, before whirling and stalking away.
Rowan held my gaze for a second, then turned to leave, too, leaving me there with the weight of it all pressed upon my chest.
Warrick came to a sudden stop, whirling with a snarl. âYou really think this is over, Rowan? Youâre just a failure, crawling on your hands and knees to try to get places you donât deserve. her.â
Rowan clenched his fists together, and paused as he growled. âSay what you will about me, Warrick, but knock it off with bringing Piper into it.â
âYou donât get to talk about her,â Warrick snapped, his voice cracking with anger and frustration. âYou donât know her like I
do.â
âAnd yet here you are,â Rowan said evenly, âaccusing her of things she hasnât done, pushing her away because you canât handle your own guilt.â
âEnough,â Aurora repeated this time coldly. Stepping between
the two men, she let her sharp eyes hold, unrelenting. âThis pack doesnât have time for petty fights. If you cannot settle this ast adults, then I will see both of you accountable.â
âI am sorry, Luna,â Rowan said, with a little bow and then with one more gaze at me, he walked off.
Warrick laughed harshly. âPetty? You think this is petty, Aurora? Heâs trying toâ¦â
âWarrick!â Auroraâs voice rose above the din. âIf you cared for Piper the way you are claiming, youâd stop embarrassing her in front of everybody.â
Warrick faltered, his gaze flicking to me. His anger softened, for a moment replaced by something like regret.
âIâm not trying to embarrass anyone,â he muttered.
âThen act like it,â Aurora said, firm but unkind.
The people finally went their separate ways, but the whispers wouldnât, until finally Aurora turned toward me: âPiper, come. with me. Nowâ.
Warrick would have reached for my arm, but I pulled away, my chest tight with it all weighing me down.
âNot now, Warrick,â I managed to choke, my voice firm though my body shook with emotion.
