Chapter 280
1/7
LILA
The moon was low in the sky, casting a thin sheen over the meeting point. My heart skittered with anticipation as I stepped out into the clearing where trees whispered ominous nothings. all around. Calla leaned against a tree, the smirk slicing through.
the tension.
âRight on time,â she said, voice a silk lined dagger.
I halted a few feet away, crossing my arms so they wouldnât shake. âWhat is it that you want now?â
Calla pushed off from the tree, each movement smooth and purposeful. âOh, Lila, donât be so indignant. We both know just why you are here.â
I bit her off, clenching my jaw tight to avoid showing her how she affected me. âGet to the point.â
Callaâs smile grew. âWell. Rowan. He has been doing so well, hasnât he? Closing in. Drawing nearer to. But heâs gotten. sidetracked.â
Something in her tone twisted my gut. âRowan is no danger to the pack,â I said. Hard. Much harder than I intended.
Calla cocked her head to the side, concern twinkled in her eyes.

âOh, sweet Lila. Itâs not about what Rowan is or isnât. Itâs about what he represents as an opportunity.â
âWhat opportunity?â I ask
âNo,â I said, firm, though my voice shaked. âIâm done with this. I wonât betray the pack.â
Callaâs eyes slitted, the smirk gone. Another step closer she took, the voice going low, almost deadly in its whisper:
âYou think you can just walk away? Like itâs that simple?â I didnât back down, but my legs did shake.
âIâve done everything you wanted, kept quiet, played along, and I wonât anymore. Rowan doesnât deserve it, neither does the pack.â
Calla cocked her head to one side. Her face was impassive. âHow noble of you,â she spat. âBut let me remind you of something, Lila. You owe me. Without me, you wouldnât even be here.
I clenched my fists. âAnd for how long do you think thatâll faze me? The pack has enough suspicions concerning me, Calla. And once you drive a bit further
Calla let a low, cutthroat laugh loose. âSweet Lila. Really think theyâd believe you and not me? Youâre but an outsider with the group, every single moment of this packâs survival you always will be.â
Those words cut much deeper than I was willing to admit, but I

didnât back off. âMaybe Iâm an outsider, but at least Iâm trying to belong. What about you? All you do is destroy.â
That smirk was back, sharper than before. âDestroying is a lot easier than building. You ought to know that by now.
Before I could say a word, footsteps behind me froze us both solid. I turned to see Piper step into the clearing, her gaze flicking between Calla and me.
âWell, well,â Piper said, her tone rife with sarcasm. âThis looks. interesting.â
Calla was quick on the rebound; her smirk gentled into a more neutral curve. âPiper, how⦠unexpected. Nobody told you that trying to put your ear in other peopleâs business is impolite?â
Piper lifted a brow, folding her arms across her chest. âI wasnât eavesdropping. I was following. Big difference.â She kept her keen gaze at me. âAnd you? Whatâs this all about, Lila?â
My throat was dry, the words wrestling with each other in my. brain. âI
âSheâs just confused,â Calla said smoothly, pushing in front of me, as if to block me. âYou know how tough pack life is
sometimes when someoneâs still settling in.â Piper wasnât buying
it.
âTough enough that they hold secret meetings in the middle of the night? Yeah, right. Again.â

Calla dramatically huffed, as if Piper was some disturbance she put up with. âHonestly, Piper, youâve been everywhere exhausts me. If you spent a little more time minding your own business, you wouldnât have to go poking around in other peopleâs affairs.â
Piperâs eyes narrowed. âAnd if you werenât being so shifty, I wouldnât have to.â.
The silence between them was electric with tension; I could hardly breathe. âStop,â I said, my voice much louder than I had. intended. They looked at me then, their glares cutting.
âI⦠I didnât mean for any of this to happen,â I stammered, glancing between the pair. âI only wanted to help the pack.â
âHelp the pack?â Piper repeated, her tone honing like a razor. âBy sneaking around with her?â She pointed the finger in Callaâs direction.
Calla snorted, clearly thrilled by the conflict. âItâs adorable, really, how protective you are. But donât you think youâre overreacting just a bit?â
Piper ignored her, moving closer to me. âLila, if youâre keeping something from us, nowâs the time to spill. Otherwise, Iâm not helping you.â
The sincerity in her voice just broke something in me, but before I could utter a word, Callaâs voice cut through.
âEnough of this, Lila doesnât owe you an explanation, and if anything, you owe her an apology for your baseless accusations.â

Piper laughed at the sound devoid of humor. âBaseless? You mean like the way youâve been manipulating everyone around you? How long do you think you can keep this act up, Calla?â
Piperâs word wiped the smirk off Callaâs face; her eyes had gone ice. âLong enough to outlast you, Piper.â
âTry me,â Piper shot back.
The air was thick with tension, and I literally felt torn between two storms. Every fiber in my body screamed to run, yet this was something from which I could not escape.
Piperâs face softened some as she looked at me again. âLila, if youâre in some sort of trouble, I can help. Just tell me the truth.â
Calla leaned in, the words a whispered threat. âSpeak very carefully, Lila. Consider what you could lose.â
Their words whipped against me like ropes, lashing at my face. My chest felt the heavy weight of choice and in a nanosecond I forgot to breathe.
It was the first that Piper hesitated; a shade of doubt passed. over her features. âWhatâs going on?
Venom dripped from Callaâs voice; her smile grew wider.
âOh, Piper, so righteous and yet even the righteous have secrets of their own. I wonder how the pack is going to take it when they find out about him.â
Chapter 280
I felt my stomach drop. âCalla, donât â
She raised her hand, silencing me. âYou arenât running things here, Lila. You never were.â

Piper took another step closer; her voice was shaking with pent up anger. âYouâre bluffing.â
âAm I?â Callaâs smile twisted cruelly. âOne little whisper, Piper, and everything youâve worked for comes crashing down. The packâs trust, Warrickâs love. all gone. Do you want to take that risk?â
Piperâs fists clenched at her sides, her breathing uneven. For a moment, I thought she might rush at Calla. Instead, she turned to me, her eyes imploring. âLila, is she telling the truth? Does she really know something?â
The weight of their gazes pressed upon me, threatening to shatter me. âPiper, Iâ¦â
Calla cut me off, an acid undertone in her whisper. âChoose wisely, Lila. The next move could determine everything.â
