Chapter 266
DANE
Aurora stood frozen outside the hallway, She looked disturbed.
Iâd had enough. The whispers, the sideways glances, the tension. rippling through the pack it all pointed to one name. Alina.
Slamming the training roster onto my desk, I stood abruptly. âThis ends now,â I muttered, the frustration bubbling over as I stormed out of the packhouse.
I found her by the gardens, plucking weeds with a near serene expression, as if she hadnât been the root of every problem that had plagued us. âAlina!â
She looked up, her facial expression unchanged. âYes, Alpha?â
âWhat game are you playing?â I asked, my voice merciless and razor sharp.
Alina cocked her head, pretending to be confused. âGame? I donât understand what you mean.
âYou know exactly what I mean,â I said, closing the distance. further. âRowan. The fire. The whispers in the pack. It leads to
you.â
Her laughter was light, nearly condescending. âYouâre deceiving

yourself, Dane. You arrested Rowan, now you are coming after me? For what? Breathing?â
âYou have been playing with their heads,â I told her with fisted hands. âStop pretending to be innocent with me.â
Alina stood, brushing dirt from her hands.
âIf you had proof. Alpha, you wouldnât be here questioning me. The truth is, you donât. Youâre grasping at shadows because youâre afraid to admit you donât have control.â
Her words stung more than I wanted to admit. âMark my words, Alina. If I find out youâre behind this, there will be no mercy.â
Aurora was pacing her office when I got back. âSheâs slippery.â I said, slumping into a chair.
âI know,â she murmured. lost in thought. âBut sheâs made mistakes. Everyone does.â
She pulled out a stack of papers, her eyes scanning them with laser focus. âWhat am I looking for?â
âPatterns,â she replied. âConnections. Alinaâs smart, but sheâs not flawless.
After scanning over the records for hours, Auroraâs face finally lit up.
âHere.â She pointed to a series of supply logs. âEvery time something has gone wrong, missing resources, unexplained

damage, Alina has always been there.â
I leaned over to study the papers. âThis is something.â
âItâs not enough to prove her guilt outright,â Aurora admitted, âbut itâs a start. If we follow this trail, weâll find the truth.
I saw Trajan and Joclyn sitting by the hearth, their voices low but urgent.
âSheâs been using Rowan,â Trajan said, his jaw tight.
âEvery action heâs taken has only served to cause chaos.â Joclyn nodded.
âAnd she is brilliant, never implicating herself, always letting another take the blame while she pulls the strings.â âHow did we miss this?â Trajan asked, frustration evident in his tone.
âSheâs a master of being in the background,â Joclyn replied. âBut we know now, and there we can act. This needs to go to Aurora
and Dane.â
Meanwhile, while tensions increased, Piper and Warrick had been really helpful as they were working like crazy to hold the pack together.
âWe need to reduce the rumors,â Piper said, arms crossed, facing a small congregation of wolves. âWeâre stronger together, but this division will tear us apart.â
Warrick nodded. âIf you have concerns, bring them to Aurora or

I directly. Spreading whispers only helps whoeverâs trying to destabilize us.â

One wolf, a young male raised a shy voice. âBut what if Rowan really didâ¦â
âHe didnât,â Piper cut in firm. âAnd even if he makes mistakes, we deal with them as a pack. Together.
There was the exchange of a pair of uncertain wolf glances, then Warrick stepped forward. Firm but encouraging: âTrust our leaders, trust in each other thatâs how we get through this.â
Deep into the night while I was strolling, I noticed that Alina was speaking to a wolf near the edges of the village.
Their voices came low, and it would be impossible not to note a catch. âYou are positive Rowan wonât say anything?â he asked. His tone was edged with doubt.
Alinaâs smile deepened, her confidence unflappable.
âHeâs too lost in his guilt to see the truth. Rowan thinks heâs to blame for everything. Thatâs what makes him useful.â The wolf shifted uncasily. âBut what if he talks? What if Aurora gets through to him?â
Alina let out a soft laugh, the sound cold and dismissive.
âAuroraâs kind heart is her weakness. Sheâll want to believe him, to save him. But Iâve left enough doubt in her mind to make sure sheâll hesitate. By the time she figures out whatâs really

happening, itâll all be over,â

The wolf frowned, his skepticism written across his face. âAnd what of Dane? He is not the sort of man to sit and do nothing while things burn down around him, either.â
The eyes of Alina flashed, razor sharp.
âDaneâs power is his weakness: too straightforward, hence predictable. Heâll come out at me quite sure Iâm the only game in town. Little does he know how ahead I am walking.â
The wolf rubbed his neck back; a feeling of unease slowly crept
over him.
âThis feels really risky, Alina. What if the pack turns against. you?â
âThey wonât,â she said confidently.
âBy the time they see the cracks, theyâll be too fractured to fight back. And when the dust settles, theyâll need someone to guide
them.â
She took a step closer, her voice dropping to a near whisper. âThat someone will be me.
The wolf hesitated, then asked, âAnd what about Rowan? What happens to him once youâve⦠achieved what you want?â
Alinaâs expression only darkened somewhat, her smirk still twisting her lips.

âRowanâs purpose is almost served. Heâs a pawn, and like any pawn, heâll be sacrificed when the time comes. Until then, Iâll keep him where I need him lost, confused, and under my control.â
The wolfâs jaw clenched, and he shifted uncomfortably. âAnd if he breaks free?â
Alina cocked her head to one side; the smirk twisted into something almost cruel. âHe wonât. But if he tries⦠Well, accidents happen.â
The wolf cast a glance in the direction of the village. Conflict etched itself across his face. âThis is a dangerous game, Alina.â
âAll games are dangerous,â she returned smoothly. âBut thatâs what makes them worth playing.â
For a moment, the wolf seemed as if he wanted to argue, but he kept quiet. Alinaâs eyes shone bright in the frail moonlight as she stepped backward; her tone was final.
âTomorrow, I go to see Rowan in his cell. I have one last piece to play.â
As the wolf vanished into the night, Alina stood there a moment longer, her smile slowly icing into a chill. She whispered,
âEverything is falling perfectly in place.â
