âI thought you died or something,â Delilah says. âWhere have you been?â
âLike you care,â I growl. âWhy are you hanging about the packâs old territory?â
âIâm guessing you two know each other?â Sylas interjects, offering his hand to Delilah. âSylas Boleanov.â
âI wouldnâtââ
âMove!â I push Sylas aside as a huge blonde wolf jumps from the bushes behind Delilah. The wolf lands on me, sending me tumbling backward to the forest floor.
The animalâs hot breath and large teeth gleam in my face. This fur brain is definitely Delilahâs mate. He snarls at me, his large paws pinning me to the ground.
âHe wasnât putting the moves on your mate, dude,â I grumble. âHeâs just an uneducated vampyre.â
Delilah manages to coax her mate off me, and I begrudgingly dust the dirt from my clothes. Sylas just stands beside me holding my backpack, clueless as to what just happened.
âIâm sorry about him. Heâs your typical male.â Delilah sighs. âWeâre working on it.â
âYou donât say.â I look the male up and down. His defensive demeanor doesnât let up. âAs I was saying, why are you here?â
Delilah pets her mateâs head as he wraps himself protectively. Thatâs when I notice her slightly swollen stomach.
~Ah. That explains things.~
âClayton and I decided to settle in a pack nearby.â
A feeling of trepidation creeps down my spine. âIf itâs the one Iâm thinking of, I wouldnât do it,â I warn. âYou donât know what goes on in that pack.â
âThe life of a rogue is no way to raise a family. Donât you agree?â
~Now I remember why I donât like her.~
I flip my hair to the side, showing that Iâm not intimidated by her antics anymore. âYouâre still so naive, even after all this time.â
Delilah growls, âIf youâre through here, leave.â
âIâm not,â I state. âBut as long as you two leave us alone, weâll be gone before you know it.â
âYouâre lucky, Mavris,â Delilah scoffs as we turn to leave. âIf this was years ago, you wouldnât dare talk to me like that.â
âYouâre right,â I say over my shoulder. âI would have had your head on a pike just like Lucasâs. Congrats on the pups, by the way.â

âThat was eventful.â Sylas chuckles as we enter the back entrance of the schoolâs cafeteria. âI can tell you two were close.â
âThe closest,â I say wryly. âShe was a typical mean girl, and I got in her way too often for comfort.â
The halls of the school are dusty and filled with old desks. The lockers are either open or donât have doors to them. Itâs very creepy without the lights on.
âSo, what do you think we need here?â he asks.
âThe library has a bunch of books on wolf history, especially my old packâs. Maybe thereâs something about this extraction scheme my grandfather is cooking up.â
Sylas ends up having to kick the library door down due to it being locked from the inside, which is peculiar. The books are still in their places on the shelves and the tables are left undisturbed.
Memories of freshman year flood my mind. Riley and I were at the ripe age of fourteen and thought we had the whole world figured out. That was before she found out my twin brother, Landon, was her mate.
I was ecstatic when I found out, but a bit jealous when my best friend was up my brotherâs ass, and vice versa, 24/7. A twinge of pain hits my heart as I remember how much I miss those two.
âKjarni?â Sylas waves his hand in my face, snapping me out of my thoughts.
âSorry.â I blink a few times. âWe should, uh, get looking.â
The history section of the library is the largest in the room. Alphas of older generations were meticulous about documenting our past. As a young wolf, I never thought it was important, but thankfully the old ones did.
Sylas reads the title of one book aloud, looking puzzled. âLiam Blood Fur the Great?â
âOur first Alpha,â I tell him. âHe was the one to combine our pack and anotherâs during a time of famine and hardship. His brother, Elvin Blood Fur, was his Beta. Those two were the best leaders my pack ever saw.â
Sylas puts the book back and picks up another. âWhat happened to them?â
âNo one knows. The two wolves and their mates just disappeared one night after the Full Moon Ceremony.â
âWhatâs the Full Moon Ceremony?â he asks.
âThe night when all the heirs are appointed to their spots,â I explain. âSome say that Liamâs son got rid of them, so they couldnât overthrow him once he became Alpha. Those members left to join other packs, or start their own.
âMy grandfatherâs ancestor was one of those wolves who left. He established the Dark Moon Pack.â
We continue flipping through pages, but thereâs nothing. No clues, stories, or hints of whatâs happening with my grandfatherâs pack.
âIâm so tired of this!â I send a book flying into the wall across the room. The ancient spine breaks on impact, and the pages scatter on the ground.
âKjarni, patience.â Sylas turns a page in his book. âDonât read too much into it.â
âEasy for you to say. It isnât your mate whoâs in trouble while we waste time here,â I growl. âWeâre already over two days into this shit. The last time we were separated, I was unmarked and...â
âTurned into what you are now?â Sylas shuts his book and scoots over to me, taking my hand in his. âKjarni, I understand this is stressful, but becoming angry and irrational wonât save Derrick any faster.â
I narrow my eyes at him.
âWhat? I can be civil with this mate of yoursâat least when it counts.â
I roll my eyes. âYouâre a strange one.â
âThe strangest, Kjarni,â Sylas smiles and brushes a piece of my hair behind my ear. âWe will find a solution. Patience is key.â
Sylasâs red eyes gleam into mine, as if he yearns to tell me something, but canât muster the courage to. I can smell the scent of his blood through his skin. Itâs intoxicating.
I look down at his lips, inching closer to mine. Part of me wants to lean in as well.
~I desperately want more of this manâs blood.~
âI canât.â I put my hand on Sylasâs chest and push him away. âI have aââ
âMate, I know, Kjarni.â He pulls back. âIâm sorry for assuming.â
âSylas...â
He picks up another book. âWe should really get back to reading.â
I let out an exasperated sigh.
~What am I doing?~
