Today was most likely the hottest day of the month.
"Cig, I'm going to melt!" she shouted dramatically, setting her book to the side.
He gave her a cool look. "Are you now?"
"Yes, I am!" she wiped her forehead. "Or I'm going to die of a heatstroke. Neither of them end well."
"Agreed."
Sighing, she looked over at him and gasped. "How are you just sitting there? Do you even feel this heat?"
"I do but I'm not as affected by it as you, " he shrugged.
"Teach me your ways!" she groaned, which made him chuckle. "Cig, if I melt, could you put me in a jar and freeze me?"
He raised an eyebrow at her. "Okay...and what would I do with your frozen remains?"
"Put it in your room. Somewhere you would be able to see me everyday. That way, you'd never forget about me."
"Forget about the girl who melted and asked me to freeze her in a jar? That's pretty unforgettable, Rainy, " he grinned when she laughed.
But he knew she was unforgettable either way. She was one of a kind and he didn't ever want to forget her pretty personality or her pretty face.
"Do you promise to do that if I melt?"
"I don't know..." he teased her.
She pouted. "Please? I would do the same for you!"
"Would you, really? Oh, how generous of you!" he said sarcastically and she moved closer to him.
"Pretty please?" she gave him the puppy dog eyes. "Pretty, pretty, pretty please?"
Every time she said pretty made him think of her. It was frustrating for him because he couldn't take his eyes off of her.
"Fine. I promise I'll freeze your remains and keep them in my room."
"Thank you, Cig! You're so nice," she poked his arm playfully.
Jolts ran through his arm and his body as she smiled at him.
He cleared his throat, nodding. "No problem."
"Ah, " she sighed. "I feel relieved. Now, I can melt in peace."
A chuckle escaped from him, which made her smile even wider. He made her heart go places she never went before with anyone.
And she made him feel. Feel things he had never felt before with anyone.
Overall, they made each other happy. Sweet happiness was what they had.
What more could they ask for?
"Ice cream!"
The famous tune of the ice cream truck sounded through the park. She jumped excitedly and reached in her pockets for money.
"I love ice cream, " she said, her eyes shining. "Especially the vanilla ice cream sandwich or the ice cream sandwich cookie."
He grinned at her enthusiasm. "That sounds really good."
"Oh, trust me, it is. I'll let you try some of mine..." she paused and frowned.
"What's wrong?" he questioned.
"I swear I had five dollars in my pocket. I don't know where it went, " she sighed.
He glanced at the ice cream truck across the park and stood up. "Let's go get you some ice cream, Rainy."
"Wait, what?"
"You heard me, " he pulled her up and she stared at him, wide eyed.
"Oh... Okay then, " she murmured.
With a small smile, he turned and began walking to the truck. But she took a hold of his wrist, stopping him.
Warmth filled him when her soft hands held his cold ones.
He turned to look at her and was engulfed in a hug. Surprised, he stumbled back and held her tightly for support.
She encircled her hands around his neck and breathed in his scent, mint and smoke. They both felt comforted in each other's arms.
Nuzzling into her hair, he pulled her closer and closed his eyes. He didn't want to move an inch at the moment. Neither did she.
"Thank you, Cig, " she whispered in his ear and he hummed softly.
He inhaled her scent of sweet dreams and let go, even though he desperately didn't want to.
"Alright, " he smiled at her. "Come on before the ice cream truck leaves."
She nodded but didn't let go of his hand. And, of course, he was okay with that. More than okay, actually.
They walked together towards the truck, hand in hand. His tall figure towered over her by a foot and a half. But she liked it for some reason.
"So, do you like the cookie sandwich or the vanilla one? Which is your favorite?"
"Um...I think the cookie sandwich, " she told him and he nodded.
Once they were in front of the ice cream truck, he ordered her cookie sandwich while she goggled at the ice cream menu.
The guy handed him the ice cream with a smile. "You two have a nice day."
"You too! Thanks, " she exclaimed and the guy chuckled before attending other people. He watched her open the ice cream wrapper, admiring her joy.
She was beautiful but she became even more beautiful when she was happy. It made him wonder how someone could have such beauty and be so happy.
Didn't it make her, in some way, perfect?
Yes, he realized. She was perfect. What else could she be? No one is smart, beautiful, and happy. Only her.
But how could it be? It's not possible to be perfect.
He gazed at her in fascination. No, she was not perfect, but she was perfect enough for him.
"Hey!" she gasped, pointing to his hand. "You bought one for yourself too!"
Confused, he looked down then smiled. "Yeah, I wanted to see if it's really as good as you say it is."
"Well, go on, " she said, barely holding in her eagerness.
Slowly opening the wrapper, fueling her impatience, he took the first bite and she waited.
And waited.
And waited.
"So?" she blurted.
"It's okay."
She gaped at him. "Okay? Okay? What are you talking about? It's delicious!"
"I guess, " he hid a smile.
"I guess? I guess?!" she shook her head at him. "You're crazy, Cig! Insane, even!"
"I wouldn't know."
"Eat more of it. Maybe it was just the first bite, " she encouraged him and he did as she said.
He shrugged. "No difference."
"Okay, let's go, " she pulled his hand and he followed behind her, perplexed but slightly amused.
"So, where are we going?" he questioned while eating more of the ice cream.
"To the mental hospital, where you belong."
He laughed.
He actually laughed.
It was such an unexpected moment that she stopped and stared at him. She was amazed.
But, also, happy.
Because she made him laugh!
"Wow, " she mumbled.
He grinned at her. "What?"
"You laughed, Cig, " she gave him a smile. "You should laugh more often, you know."
"You should too."
"Fine. It's a deal, " she quirked an eyebrow at him and he shrugged.
"Sure."
They shook hands and continued to eat their ice cream.
She didn't feel like she was going to melt anymore. At least, not because of the heat, anyway...
But he, on the other hand, had already melted.
For she had captured his heart and kept it in a jar.
Just like she said she would.
