Chapter 12
Runaway King ✔️
Benâs POV
âKiddos, I'm going to town. Stay here and donât do anything stupid.â Maseâs mom said as she clutched her purse. âMase! I swear you better not bring in a random dog again! And Ben!â She turned to me. âI made your favorite sandwiches on the table.â She turned and headed for the door.
âThanks, Ms. Howard.â I turned to Mase who was snarking at me.
âShe treats you more like a son than me.â He huffed. âShe literally treats you like a king.â My back froze. I chuckled a bit.
âHa ha. Yeah. Like a king.â I tried not to sound too off.
We were watching a movie on TV. This one is much smaller than the one Iâm used to. But at least I can still see whatâs going on. Just as a character was about to strike, the power went out. I thought at first it was a part of the film but Mase got up.
âDammit!â He banged on the TV like it would help. A loud thunder was outside. In an instant, it began to pour outside. Iâve never seen a place flood faster. The road was starting to become submerged in water.
âOoh! Itâs raining!â I said. I gawked outside and watched the rain. I heard a zipper and turned to see Mase putting on a heavy jacket.
âIâm going outside and check the fuse box. You,â He turned to me. âStay here and donât do anything!â He began to walk out.
âWhat if youâre in danger?â I asked.
âThen Iâll die. That wouldnât be so bad.â He exited the front door. I was alone in the dark. This is like being back home in the large castle at night as me and Kat are wandering around trying to find late night snacks.
I sat on the couch not knowing what to do. Is this how people lived before the internet? Just sat around and breathed? Thatâs so boring. A few minutes went by and nothing. And then a few more. I started to panic a bit. I know Mase said not to look for him but I love breaking rules.
Why not? I thought to myself. I slipped on some shoes and a jacket and made my way to the front door. Upon opening it, I was hit with a gust of wind that almost knocked me back. Water droplets hit my face. I exited and closed the door quickly so no rain got inside.
Outside was a bit dark since the rain clouds obstructed the sun. I thought back to where the fuse box was. Never Eat Soggy Waffles. Itâs on the east side of the house.
I walked and almost slipped in the mud. Shouldâve brought some sneakers instead of my Doc Martens. Iâm too deep in now.
A flash of lightning came and partially illuminated the area in front of me. I couldâve sworn I saw someone on the floor. I approached closer and leaned down. Another burst of light confirmed it was a person. It was Mason. He was on the floor unconscious.
âMase? Mase!?â I began to shake him aggressively. He didnât move. âMase! Shit!â I said. I turned and saw the fuse box was open. I have no idea how to work this thing. I touched something and sparks flew out. I pulled the red lever and a humming sound came out.
I bent down and picked up Mase. He got a bit of mud on me but it doesnât matter. I need to get him inside and make sure heâs okay. I dragged him along and put in all the work.
âHang in there!â I said to him as if he could hear me. I stumbled around the house and almost fell on some bushes. The sound of the thunder didn't make this any better.
I entered the home quickly. The TV was blaring loud noises and the kitchen light was on. So I guess my tinkering worked. The weight of Mase took over and I put him on the floor gently.
âMase! Wake up!â I slapped his face. This is the second time I have to save him.
âYou can stop slapping me now.â Maseâs rough voice said. I jumped back and hugged him tightly.
âMASON!â I almost choked him. âI thought I lost you! Donât ever do that again!â I said. I didnât let myself cry. Because A: I donât cry. And B: Itâll show Iâm starting to care for him. I do care for him, but I donât want to care for him.
âHowâd I get in here?â He asked. He sat up. âDid I fix it?â He asked.
âI dragged you in here. I know you said not to go out but I began to worry. And you kinda fixed it but I finished it for you.â I said. Mase quickly got up and began to go upstairs. âWhere are you going?â I asked. I removed my muddy shoes and followed him.
âI need a shower.â He said.
âHang on! Do you remember what caused you to pass out?â I asked as I climbed the stairs. Mase was treading his way. I donât think he should be walking right now.
âI guess it was the electricity.â He said. He refused to look at me, like he was ashamed.
âCan we at least get you checked up. You never know. Accidents can be fatal. Like this one time when my cousinâs dad got-â He cut me off.
âBen!â He turned and grabbed my shoulders. His sudden movement made me shut up quickly. âIâm fine. I promise. Now can you please let me shower so I can get this mud off me?â He said.
âS-sure.â I stuttered out. Mase began to take off his jacket and then shirt. âUhâ¦â I said as I looked at his chest.
Out of instinct, my hands reached out and placed it on his toned chest. My fingers brushed on his soft velvet-like skin.
âBen?â Mase asked. I looked up and pulled my hand away. I just touched him! I canât even control myself around him. I didnât know what to say so I just left the bathroom and closed the door behind me. This is the first time Iâve ever touched anyone with wanting. Mason is different from anyone Iâve met. Heâs sweet, caring, and sometimes annoying. But thatâs what I like about him.
âNeed any help?â I asked him from behind the door. The shower turned on.
âIâm fine, Ben! Can I shower in peace?â He asked. I left the bathroom, heading downstairs to eat some sandwiches.
