............

Heart racing, mind spinning and limb shaking was how Wendy leaped to the window when she read the message.

Sure enough a blue car was pulled right across the street. Resting her head against the cool glass she sighed, summoning all the confidence she had within herself to help her get through this.

The doorbell rang.

Oh my God, he's here.

OH MY GOD!

She glanced at herself in the mirror and pursed her lips. She had applied a thin layer of eyeliner to make her eyes look pretty and a swipe of cherry coloured lipstick. Her hair fell in loose curls around her shoulders.

It was just a dance party after the semester exams so she had settled for a green dress with intricate patterns that spiraled till her knees. The off shoulder straps gave a perfect view of her delicate collar bones.

Inhaling loudly she spun on her heels and walked out of her room, hands threaded together and began descending the stairs. The smell of fresh roses wafted through the air and Wendy stopped when she heard charter fill the living room.

"Oh my! Mark, Wendy, look who's here!" Her mother gushed loudly, her tone so happy and surprised. Wendy listened carefully.

"Holy shit! Man, it's been such a long time since I last you," Mark sounded over the moon. Wendy heard a pat on the back followed by delightful laughter filling up the space.

"Wendy! Wendy!" Her mother called her down but it was as if her legs had froze she stood there, her stomach twisting in knots.

"And just because you shifted to the other side of the town doesn't mean you stop coming to this place. So tell me, how's your Dad, how's Shorty? Why don't you come home anymore?!" Wendy's mom was shooting questions at an incredible rate.

Shorty? But she is the sister of...

Oh my God, Sarah is Shorty!

It's him!

Wendy managed to race back up the stairs in her heels and dashed into her room. She stared at her flushed face in the mirror and her mouth opened when all the memories bombarded back.

He was the one who taught her basketball in her backyard when they were seven.

He was her best friend through out elementary school, the boy who came at her house in weekends to play and help her mom bake butterscotch cookies.

He was the one who had her back all this time, he even told her about his mom and yet she couldn't figure out who he was!

She saw him daily and just because they drifted apart in middle school she ruled him out altogether.

Wendy felt stupid. She felt so stupid she covered her face with her hands and groaned into it.

I'm a horrible person.

He had been her family friend and an integral part of her life and now when she thought about it everything made sense. Why he reached out to her in the first place and made sure with messages each day that she looked after herself.

A soft knock on her door had her mind in a frenzy again. She slowly lifted her head and looked into the mirror on the desk ahead her. He was standing near the door looking at her.

"Hey, Spencer" her voice was soft and fragile. Her stomach flipped when she caught him staring at her in the mirror. He wore a crisp white shirt rolled at the elbows and dark jeans. As he stepped more into the room, she could smell his strong cologne and just how addicting it was.

Holding her gaze he stood behind her until Wendy could feel his breath on her neck.

"Surprised?" He asked tilting his head a little, "or shocked?"

Wendy felt like crying.

She managed a wobbly smile in return but it was too much. As if her heart had had enough, she spun around and buried her head in his chest. Like a reflex his arms immediately came around her, holding her close.

Her dainty hands clutched the fabric of his shirt and his strong ones stroked up and down her back.

"I'm sorry if I hurt you Wendy"

No. Please don't be, you did nothing wrong.

She wanted to say it but she felt like a golf ball was lodged in her throat. She just clutched him tighter and when his hold became even tighter Wendy thought she received the world in her hands.

Wendy didn't know how long they remained like that tangled in each others arms and basking in the warmth of their affection.

Wendy felt content and with the way his heart was beating against her ear she was sure he didn't want to let go either. She had just found the perfect place for her heart and it was here in this man's arms who loved without expecting. A man who cared without limit.

"I would love to remain like this but I think your mom is coming upstairs" Spencer said and Wendy grudgingly pushed herself away from him. She breathed deeply and looked up at him.

His green eyes had never looked so enticing than it did in that moment. They were filled with satisfaction, happiness and above all hope.

"Wendy, you never told me Spencer is taking you to the dance,"  Mrs. Harper said narrowing hey eyes at her daughter. Wendy turned around fumbling with the make up products on the table.

"That would be because of me, I told her wanted to give you a surprise," Spencer said smiling with his teeth. Mrs. Harper melted at that.

"Aren't you getting late? It's almost six. By the way, if you don't show me your face again in the next five days, I'm going to thrash you," Mrs. Harper said while pulling his ears.

"Understood, Ma'am," he said chuckling and gave her a salute.

When Wendy's mom was out of her room, Spencer moved closer to Wendy.

"You know I had bought roses for you but I just realised those roses are no match to your beauty," He said while his eyes moved up and down her figure.

Wendy's cheeks turned pink at that. She nudged him lightly in the stomach and rolled her eyes.

"Thank you, Spencer" Wendy found herself saying once she faced him.

"What for?" He took her hand in his and interwined them.

"For always being there, for..." Wendy looked into his eyes. "Being my well wisher"

He gave her hand a light squeeze before saying, "That has to be the wisest decision of my life"
