âShe has to be punished. Thatâs my bottom line,â Caroline emphasized. âI wonât back down.â
âSheâs been sent home to reflect,â he replied.
âSuch a huge mistake, and sheâs just staying at home for a couple of days, thinking thatâs enough to resolve it? Is that it?â
David slightly turned his head. âWhat do you want?â
He directly threw the question back at her.
Caroline paused, taken aback. What do I want? Beat Elizabeth senseless? Tie her up and have two men humiliate her? That isnât going to happen. David wouldnât agree to that. Elizabeth was his precious darling, the one he adored- how could she be subjected to such humiliation?
âIâm asking you,â Davidâs voice darkened. âCat got your tongue?â
Caroline bit her lip, then suddenly laughed. Her laugh carried a mix of sarcasm and helplessness.
David finally turned to look at her. âWhat are you laughing at?â
âIâm laughing because youâve actually left me speechless,â Caroline replied. âYes, what can I really do to Elizabeth? Could I use the same methods she used on me to get back at her? But thatâs unrealistic, because first of all, you wouldnât agree. After thinking it through it seems like I just have to let it go⦠let it go. She kidnapped me, had people humiliate me, and whatâs the result? Even though I found the evidence, the end result is still the same. I was just foolishly believing in the saying âevil will be repaid with evil.â
Caroline walked up to Davidâs side, turned her head, and stared at him. âAt the end of the day, itâs because Iâm not important enough. I donât have status, I donât have influence. If I were rich and powerful, Elizabeth wouldnât dare touch me. If you loved me enough and cared for me, she wouldnât dare act so recklessly.â
Those who arenât loved are free to be bullied. They are insignificant and humble.

âSo, itâs not that I donât want a divorce,â David slowly exhaled, the smoke rising. âOn your own, you have the power to keep your position.â
The smoke made her cough repeatedly, and she waved her hand in front of her face to clear it.
