After all, she was just a standâin, a pretender, and the weight of her anxiety was overwhelming.
Could Mr. Ellison have discovered something?
âIt⦠it was me, Mr. Ellison,â Elizabeth said nervously, nodding in affirmation. âDidnât you investigate already? My father booked the room; I was resting inside, and then you came in, and everything just happened naturally.â
David didnât linger on her response and simply walked back towards the Ellison residence.
Why am I feeling this way? Whatâs wrong with me?
That night had been his wedding night with Caroline, the very day they were meant to start their life together. Caroline was the bride; she should have been in the bridal suite.
There was no way she could have been at the hotel.
Caroline entered her room, picked up her sleepwear, and made her way to the bathroom for a bath. Her body felt completely drained.
She let herself sink into the tub, the warm water washing away her fatigue, and shut her eyes.
Her thoughts drifted to the skincare formulas she had been working on, but soon, Elizabethâs hateful expression replaced them.
Caroline knew she had to uncover solid evidence to prove that Elizabeth was behind her kidnapping. Without evidence, David would never believe her or take action against Elizabeth.
Even if he couldnât bring himself to punish his beloved mistress harshly, he would at least need to put on a show and give Caroline the justice she deserved.

Nash was the best choice.
He was the father of her child, and protecting their babyâs safety was his duty.
Besides, Nash owed herâhe had wronged her, and it was time for him to make things right.
Caroline wouldnât tell him she was carrying his child, but she could still demand his help
when necessary.
It was all for the baby.
As the father, Nash had every reason to step up and help.
The idea gave her hope, and for the first time, she felt optimistic.
But her relief was shortâlived. A deep voice came from the bathroom doorway.
âWho were you just calling? Hmm?â
Startled, Caroline turned to see David leaning against the doorframe, arms crossed, his eyes brimming with fury.
She instinctively covered her chest. âHow did you get in here?â
She distinctly remembered locking the door.
âI asked you a question,â David demanded, his voice cold. âWhose name were you calling? Answer me!â
Caroline bit her lip in frustration, cursing her carelessness.
She hadnât meant to say Nashâs name aloud, and certainly not for David to overhear.
Taking a deep breath, she responded bluntly. âYou already heard me. Why are you even asking?â

Davidâs expression darkened as he strode towards her, the sharp click of his shoes echoing in the bathroom.
Panicking, Caroline reached for a towel, but David was too quick. He lifted her out of the tub in one swift motion.
Water splashed everywhere, soaking his clothes and shoes, but he didnât seem to care.
âCaroline,â he growled, his voice filled with rage, âyou stay under my watch all day, and yet you dare to let another man cross your mind? Are you begging for trouble?â
Davidâs jealousy erupted, pushing him to the brink of madness.
