At Ellison Group the next morning, Caroline prepared to report to Boris about her meeting with Cameron. However, when she arrived at his office, she found it empty.

The assistant looked up. “Mr. Boris is with Mr. Ellison right now. You should check back later.”

“Oh… okay.”

Caroline responded, but something felt off.

David wouldn’t actually believe I had a connection with Cameron… would he? Would he tell Boris to block me from any future dealings with him?

Inside the President’s Office, Boris leaned back, stretching his arms. “Alright, Mr. Ellison, what’s so urgent that you had to drag me here first thing in the morning?”

David’s expression was cold and sharp. “How exactly are you managing things?”

Boris raised an eyebrow. “Excuse me?”

The sudden criticism caught him completely off guard.

“You let Caroline meet Cameron alone? Spend the afternoon together–and have dinner?” David’s voice was low and dangerous. “She’s just a formulator. Cameron is a high–profile client. Their status isn’t even close. Is that really how you handle things?”

Boris blinked, then exhaled in realization. So this was what had him worked up.

Remembering Caroline’s call last night, he scratched his chin. “Hold on… You don’t actually think Cameron and Caroline were on a date, do you?”

“Don’t change the subject.”

Boris held back a laugh. “Alright, alright. Listen. First, Cameron specifically requested to meet Caroline. He takes his research seriously and knows a lot about R&D. Second, his visit was last–minute–I didn’t have time to plan anything else. I was tied up with other projects. And third, Cameron explicitly stated that he only needed to meet Caroline. He arrived in the morning and left at night. No time for anything else.” Boris drummed his fingers against the desk. “Is that explanation good enough for you? Or are you looking for something else, Mr. Ellison?”

David’s expression didn’t change.

“It doesn’t matter what the circumstances were,” he said. “Caroline shouldn’t have been left alone with Cameron. If you weren’t available, someone else should have been there.”

“But she did exceptionally well.” Boris countered. “In fact, Cameron messaged me last night–said he was pleased, enjoyed their discussion, and is looking forward to another meeting.”

The longer Boris thought about it, the more confused he became. “Everything was handled properly. Caroline did her job well. Cameron was happy. So what’s the real problem?”

David’s gaze darkened. “Cameron’s interest in Caroline… isn’t normal.”

Boris stiffened. “What?”

“He specifically requested a private meeting with her. That alone is unusual. Then, he personally gave her a batch of rare ginseng–at a discounted price. And he refused to sell it to anyone else–only her.” David’s voice was cold. “So tell me, Boris… What exactly do you think he wants?”

Boris suddenly understood.

So this was why Caroline had called him last night. David was completely overthinking this.
