“If I had told you it was Nash’s driver, you would’ve overreacted, gotten jealous, and made a scene. Why stir up unnecessary trouble? I thought keeping it to myself would avoid conflict, but somehow… we still ended up here.”

She sighed, her lashes trembling slightly as she put on an innocent, helpless look.

It didn’t matter if David believed her–this was the only way she could respond.

David leaned in closer, his breath hot against her face. “Caroline, do you really think I’m that stupid?”

So, he wasn’t buying it.

There was no other way–Caroline had to keep going. “He’s just a driver, David. Why are you so fixated on him? Do you really think Nash would go through all this trouble? It’s not like Nash came to see me himself. You were there at the hospital–you heard everything when I cut ties with him. There’s nothing between us anymore. He and I will never cross paths again.”

David let out a cold laugh. “Of course, Nash didn’t come himself. He didn’t have the guts. That’s why he sent his driver.”

Caroline’s hands clenched into fists.

How was he always so sharp? He saw through everything and guessed everything right. Lying to him was nearly impossible.

“You’re imagining things,” she said calmly, forcing herself to hold his gaze. “I have nothing to say to Nash. I don’t need his driver relaying messages.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“David, you’re being ridiculous. Think about it. I was supposed to be at home, asleep, but you dragged me to the hospital to watch you and Elizabeth put on a show, then left me standing outside alone. Are you seriously suggesting Nash somehow predicted all of this and had his driver waiting just to deliver a message?”

But a few words weren’t enough. David wasn’t convinced.

His face was so close to hers now that she could feel the warmth of his breath. “Nash still wants you. Are you secretly hoping he’ll come back for you?”

David had no doubt–Nash’s feelings for Caroline hadn’t faded in the slightest.

He had seen it all. He still remembered how frantic Nash was when Julia kidnapped her, the desperation in his eyes, the way he fought to break into that operating room.
