âHah! Iâll put up with you for now, but just waitâone day, youâll be the one begging me! The baby Iâm carrying is your true grandchild! You want Caroline to get pregnant so badly, but whatâs the point? She may be expecting, but who knows if sheâll even be able to keep it? And even if she does, whoâs to say the child will survive for long? Teh, at your age, you should be worrying about how many days you have left.â
After letting out her frustration, Elizabeth felt slightly better.
But it wasnât enough.
She still needed to lash out at Carolineâthat was the only way sheâd truly feel relieved.
In the parking lot, Harper got into the car, rolled down the window, and waved. âIâm off now.â
âGoodbye, Mom,â Caroline said with a gentle smile, exuding the kind of grace and warmth that elders found comforting.
Harperâs car drove off, disappearing down the road. Carolineâs smile remained in place.
âPathetic,â David commented coldly.
She acted as if she didnât hear him.
âCaroline, I said, itâs pathetic,â he repeated, his voice carrying a sharp edge. âWipe that smile off your face.â
Something about her expression unsettled him. It felt hollow, unnaturalâlike she was merely a lifeless doll going through the motions.
âAre you seriously trying to control even this, David?â She shot back. âAre you determined to take over every part of me?â
âEvery part of you has always belonged to me.â
Caroline lifted her gaze to meet his.
He saw it clearlyâher eyes were filled with nothing but pure despair. It was deep. Unshakable.
âDavid, you might as well just kill me,â she said softly. âStop tormenting me.â
âKill you?â David echoed, tilting his head slightly. His fingers brushed beneath her eyes in a slow, deliberate motion. âWhy would I? I could never. You need to stay alive. Stay with me. Grow old with me. Do you understand?â
Caroline remained silent.
âI asked youâdo you understand?â David leaned in, his lips nearly touching hers. âAnswer me.â
Caroline didnât blink. She didnât look away.
âDavid, we will never grow old together,â she said with chilling calmness. âEither you die, or I do.â
The way he tormented her, controlled herâhow could she possibly accept it?

Before the baby was even born, he wanted her to lose it.
And if she managed to give birth, he planned to take the child away.
The hatred brewing inside her was so strong, she wished she could take David down with her.

âYouâre not going to die. And neither am I,â David said, his smirk infuriatingly smug. âAnd your children? They wonât die either. But whether they live well⦠that all depends on you.â
Carolineâs rage erupted.
Without hesitation, she raised her hand and swung at himâquick, forceful, and precise.
But before she could land the slap, just a Breath away from his cheek, her wrist was caught in an unyielding grip.
She couldnât move another inch forward. David had stopped her with ease.
His reflexes were faster.
His strength was overpowering.
I stopped her with case.
Pain shot through her wrist as his grip tightened, so fierce it felt like her bones might crack.
âDid you really think you could hit me?â David sneered, his voice full of mockery. âYouâre not quick enough. The second you raised your hand, I already knew what you were going to do.â He paused, then arched a brow, smirking. âAnd if you were holding a knife instead? Youâd be even slower. If you really want to kill me, Caroline⦠youâd better train harder first.â
With that, he released her hand, shoving it away without hesitation.
Caroline staggered backward, barely managing to steady herself.
