âIt was obvious when the manager was yelling at you,â Anna said. âI could see it clearlyâMr. Ellisonâs expression screamed protectiveness. And sure enough, he manager got fired, and he stood up for you like some knight in shining armor.â
Caroline groaned, lightly banging her forehead against the table. After a moment of thought, she decided not to hide it anymore.
She suddenly sat up straight. âAnna, Mr. Ellison and I are actually married.â
Annaâs mouth fell open, her shock rendering her speechless.
âBut weâll be divorced soon,â Caroline added, pursing her lips. She then recounted everything that had happened over the past month. âSo, now you understand why I wanted to leave the moment I heard David â« was coming, right?â
âThat explains it. I get it now.â
âI didnât mean to keep it from you, Anna. Itâs just⦠everything is so complicated, and Iâ¦â
Anna interrupted her, her voice full of concern. âYouâve been dealing with all of this alone? Thatâs exhausting. If Iâd known sooner, I couldâve been there for you.â

Nash Newton stared at her for a moment before replying, âCall me whatever you like.â
âThen Mr. Newton it is. What can I do for you?â
Nash sighed. âMust you be so distant with me?â
Caroline countered, âAre we supposed to be close?â
âI know⦠Caroline, you still hate me. Hate me for leaving without a word, for abandoning you, for choosing a wellâmatched fiancée, and most of all⦠For choosing ambition over love without hesitation.â
âMr. Newton, you abandoned me?â Caroline chuckled. Iâm afraid I donât understand. After all, we were never together to begin with.â
