David stood up.

Afraid she’d give him an immediate answer, he added, “Think carefully before you respond. Don’t just say something out of anger.”

David had already made up his mind. If Caroline said she doesn’t want the baby born, he would call the hospital that instant and arrange for an

bortion. But if she said she does want Elizabeth to keep it… Then what?

“Don’t say something in the heat of the moment,” he repeated. “Think it through.”

Her answer mattered.

For the first time in a long while, David felt nervous. His palms were sweating.

One sentence from her was enough to dictate his every move.

The tension between them thickened. The servants in the room had already slipped out, sensing the storm brewing. Here we go again–Mr. and Mrs. Ellison were about to have another explosive argument.

Caroline blinked, staring at him.
