Even though she had expected this outcome, it still hurt.

âDavid, donât make promises you canât keep,â Caroline said quietly. âWhen you give someone hope, only to rip it away, does it amuse you? Do you enjoy playing with me like this?â
David stood up.
The height difference forced Caroline to tilt her head to look at him. Good. That way, it is easier to hold back my tears.
âItâs not because Elizabeth is pregnant that Iâm letting things go. Itâs becauseâ¦â
The words were on the tip of his tongue, but for a moment, he didnât know how to explain.
Because he never planned to keep Elizabethâs child. Because the only future he wanted was with her.
That was why he had chosen to forgive. It was his way of compensating Elizabeth.
After a pause, he changed his approach. âI have something to ask you.â
Caroline met his gaze, her eyes filled with nothing but disappointment.
At this point, it was just ironic.
She shouldâve known better than to expect anything from him. He had only ever taken her hopes and crushed them underfoot.
David continued, unfazed by her silence. âElizabeth is carrying my child. Thatâs a fact. And youâmy wife, from your position, tell me honestly⦠do you want her to keep the baby?â
He was asking for her opinion.
Afraid sheâd give him an immediate answer, he added, âThink carefully before you respond. Donât just say something out of anger.â
David had already made up his mind. If Caroline said she doesnât want the baby born, he would call the hospital that instant and arrange for an
bortion. But if she said she does want Elizabeth to keep it⦠Then what?
âDonât say something in the heat of the moment,â he repeated. âThink it through.â
Her answer mattered.
For the first time in a long while, David felt nervous. His palms were sweating.
One sentence from her was enough to dictate his every move.
The tension between them thickened. The servants in the room had already slipped out, sensing the storm brewing. Here we go againâMr. and Mrs. Ellison were about to have another explosive argument.
Caroline blinked, staring at him.
The man in front of herâstern, controlling, unyieldingâwas nothing like the vulnerable one she had heard last night.

His dreamlike confession still echoed in her cars. I love you. I really, really love youâ¦
And now, he was standing before her, asking her to decide the fate of another womanâs child.
She let out a quiet laugh. âSince when was Elizabethâs baby mine to decide?â
Davidâs eyes darkened.

âItâs your child,â Caroline continued. âThe bloodline of the Ellison family. The future heir of Ellison Group. I have no right to judge your child.â
Davidâs grip tightened on her shoulders. âAnswer me.â
Caroline bit her lip.
She looked into his eyesâdark as ink.
âYou really want my answer?â she asked. âWhy?â
She had no idea what had happened between him and Elizabeth at the hospital last night.
That conversation⦠she never could have imagined.
âThereâs no why,â David said, his jaw clenched. âWhatever you say, Iâll do.â
If she told him to get rid of the child, he would.
If she told him to keep itâfine. He would keep it. For her.
Caroline froze.
She couldnât believe what she had just heard. Whatever I say⦠he would do? How is that even possible?
