Now that he had seen Elizabeth and said what needed to be said, he was ready to go backâto the Ellison residence, back to Carolineâs side.
Caroline⦠donât push me away. And donât push me toward Elizabeth. Would she ever understand this love?
David would rather owe Elizabeth, would rather give up his own child, if it meant being with Caroline.
By the time he returned to the Ellison residence, it was three in the morning.
Sitting in the car, he rolled down the window, letting the cool night air in. One hand rested lazily on the door, a cigarette pinched between his fingers.
The ember glowed and dimmed, the ash falling in soft, silent flakes.
Only after finishing the cigarette did he head upstairs to the master bedroom.
His movements were lightâso lightâafraid of waking her. He simply stood at the bedside, quietly watching her sleep.
Caroline shifted, her instincts stirring. Even halfâasleep, she could feel someone watching her. Her eyelids fluttered open.
âAh-!â
She let out a startled cry, bolting upright in bed.
In the dim light, her face was filled with fear and helplessness, as if she had just seen a ghost.
âYouâ¦â She swallowed, her voice hoarse with sleep. It took her a moment to recognize him. âDavid? Itâs you?â
He let out a low hum of acknowledgment, his voice rough.
âYou were just standing there, not making a sound? Thatâs terrifying!â Caroline switched on the bedside lamp, frowning. âWerenât you at the hospital?â
âI went. Now Iâm back.â
âIf you went, you shouldâve stayed there.â
David leaned in, one knee pressing onto the bed as he tilted her chin up. âAre you mad at me?â
âNo. I donât have the right to be.â
His gaze darkened.
âHowâs Elizabeth?â she asked. âMother and child are safe, right? No complications?â
David didnât answer.

His fingers tightened slightly, pulling her into his arms. Without another word, he lowered his head and kissed her.
This time, he wasnât rough or forceful.
His lips barely brushed against hersâlight, fleeting,
If she wanted to push him away, it wouldâve been easy.
But⦠she didnât.
She simply tilted her head back, letting him kiss her gently, as if his touch could disappear with the breeze.
The emotions between them were tangled with sorrow, heavy with loss.
They loved, yet there was resentment.
Davidâs breath brushed against her lips. âWhy arenât you pushing me away?â
âBecause pushing you away will only make you kiss me harder,â Caroline said softly. âNo matter what I do, I can only go along with whatever you want.â
His Adamâs apple bobbed. âYouâre not even going to ask me what Elizabeth and I talked about?â
âNot interested.â Caroline let out a small, amused laugh. âLet me guessâyou two even picked out a name for the baby?â
Davidâs lips curled slightly. But the smirk vanished just as quickly.
It was a mocking smile.
She really believed he had gone there to keep that child.
Before he could speak, Caroline asked, âWhat matters more to me is where weâre headed. David, have you thought about how this ends?â
Davidâs voice was low, resolute. âThere is no end for us.â
We would keep entangling. This lifetime. The next. Forever.
âWeâve come this far, and you still refuse to let me goâ¦â Caroline let out a long sigh. âWhatâs the point?â
