She watched as the car sped away from the Ellison residence, turning the corner and vanishing from sight.
David still left.
The entire Ellison residence fell into a heavy silence.
Caroline slowly sat on the sofa, her tear streaked face hollow and lifeless.
I still lost completely and utterly. A crushing, irredeemable defeat.
Caroline knew she shouldnât have tried to stop David, shouldnât have asked him to stay. But she couldnât help it, she had gambled everything, her pride, her emotions, on the faint hope that he wouldnât leave.
What a jokeâ¦
She had placed a bet she was never meant to win.
âWhat was I even hoping for?â she whispered to herself. âWas I really so easily swayed by a few sweet words from David? Did I actually believe I mattered to him? That I was worth something? Did I seriously think I could compete with Elizabeth, a woman carrying his childâ¦â
âHer pregnancy is precious, sheâs carrying the heir. And me? What am I?â
âCaroline, you never learn, do you? You trust too easily. Nash said he loved you, and you believed him. You thought youâd marry him right after graduation. Then David said he loved you, and you believed him tooâ¦â
Tears streamed down her face once more. But, she made no sound as she cried.
Over the years, she had trained herself to cry in silence, biting her lips so hard that no one would hear a single sob. A deep imprint of her teeth was pressed into her lower lip, fresh blood seeping out.
Before the housekeeper and maids entered the living room, Caroline stood up and made her way upstairs, locking herself inside the master bedroom. Her pain and wounds, she would tend to them alone, in the darkness.
At Maternity and Child Hospital, David walked into the hospital with a cold expression, devoid of any joy or warmth. He strode straight toward the patientâs room.
As he pushed open the door, he saw Elizabeth hunched over the side of the hospital bed, clutching her chest as she dry heaved.
A nurse gently patted her back. âThis is the worst case of morning sickness Iâve ever seen. Youâve been vomiting from morning till night, without stopping⦠you canât go on like this. Tomorrow, you should ask the doctor for some medication.â
âBy the way, whereâs your husband? I havenât seen him at all, only your parents came to visit. Heâs the father of the child, no matter how busy he is, shouldnât he at least show up. Are you hungry? Do you want something to eat? You shouldnât rely on delivery food, itâs unhealthyâ¦â
Elizabeth weakly shook her head. âItâs fine. I just need to rest. His work is important, I donât want to bother
him.â
âWhat could be more important than a pregnant woman and her baby?â

Chapter 282 Where is your husband havenât seen him
âItâs nothing urgent, no need to disturb him⦠urghâ¦â
Another violent wave of nausea hit, and she gagged again.
David furrowed brows slowly relaxed as he observed the scene. He walked forward to the bedside.
Hearing footsteps, Elizabeth lifted her head, her tired eyes lighting up with joy. âMr. Ellison?â

She instinctively reached out for his hand, but halfway through, she hesitated frozen in place, unsure whether to touch him or not. Was she afraid he would be annoyed, or did she simply feel unworthy.
David noticed this small detail.
It seemed that his coldness and rejection over the past few days had already left a mark on her. For the first time, David wondered if he had been too harsh on Elizabeth.
After all⦠she was carrying his child. And in this state, she looked so fragile.
The nurse glanced at him. âYouâre her husband? Finally showed up. Alright, Iâll leave her in your care, Iâve got other patients to tend to. If her morning sickness keeps getting this bad, I suggest you call the attending physician for a checkâup.â
