The supervisor, oblivious to what was going on behind him, stood with his hands on his hips and scolded Caroline.
âKid, where are your manners? Iâve already informed everyone that Mr. David is coming. Why canât you just cooperate and behave? Why do you insist on being difficult, huh? If Mr. David sees this, our entire department will be in trouble. None of us can afford to clean up your mess! We canât allow you to act so recklessly in front of him.â
The supervisor held a small managerial role in his department, and Caroline was just an inexperienced fresh graduate. Emboldened by his position of authority, he raised his voice further.
âAnd another thing,â he continued while jabbing at her resume with his finger, âwe donât hire undergrads here. Youâre not even qualified to be here! Take a good look at yourself. Do you really think youâre worthy of joining the Ellison Group? Youâre way too inexperienced and young!â
Caroline remained silent.
Taking her quiet demeanor as weakness, the supervisor pressed on, âConsidering your behavior today, Iâm blacklisting you. From now on, youâre barred from applying to any Ellison Group recruitment events⦠Hey! Caroline, did you hear me?â
Caroline finally responded as she picked up her resume from the floor. âMr. David is already here.â
Her attempt to leave had failed. The very scenario she feared most had come to pass.
The supervisor was momentarily stunned before he spun around.
Standing at the doorway was, indeed, David. He had one hand casually tucked into the pocket of his tailored trousers. His suit was impeccable, his expression was cold and composed, it betrayed no hint of
emotion.
âMr⦠Mr. David.â The supervisorâs attitude changed instantly, his face was plastered with an eager smile as he bowed repeatedly. âI wasnât aware you had arrived. I was just reprimanding an unruly candidate. Iâm so sorry if I disturbed you.â
David raised his chin slightly to point at Caroline. âDid you just say that you were going to blacklist her?â
âUh, yes, sirâ¦â
âQuite bold of you.â
Caroline was Davidâs wife, no matter how much he disliked her, he still firmly believed that no one else had the right to boss her around!
Only I get to bully her! David thought.
The supervisorâs face turned ghostly pale, he tried to explain, but William cut him off. âDo you even know who calls the shots around here? Get the hell out.â
âYes, yes, yes.â The supervisor was scared out of his wits
But David wasnât done, he walked over to him and asked in a relaxed voice, âTell me, who gave you

âMr. David, I⦠Iâ¦â The supervisor stuttered, unable to form a coherent sentence. Finally, he resorted to slapping himself hard across the face. âItâs my fault! I was being arrogant, I shouldnât have said what I said, please, Mr. David, have mercy on someone as foolish as me.â
The sharp sound of his selfâinflicted punishment echoed through the corridor, each slap more frantic
than the last.
Caroline tried to avoid meeting Davidâs eyes by keeping her head down.
She felt like a magnet for disasters. Every time she tried to stay out of trouble, things only got worse.
Meanwhile, the other candidates were casting curious glances at her, they all wondered about her connection to the CEO.
âCaroline, does Mr. David know you?â Anna whispered. Heâs totallyâstanding up for you!â
âNo, he doesnât,â Caroline denied without hesitation.
Anna frowned. âReally? Thatâs odd.â
. Just then, David called for William in his usual flat voice.
âYes, Mr. David.â
âFire and blacklist this man.â
William nodded, âUnderstood.â
David walked past Caroline without so much as a glance, her hair was slightly tousled by his movement.
Just as she thought the ordeal was finally over, his cold voice rang out from behind her.
âCaroline, inside. Now.â
