“Cough,” Andrew coughed deliberately, then spoke loudly. “Caroline, your performance has been terrible. You’re at the bottom of the evaluation this month, and all your bonuses are canceled.”

So, he was just looking for a fight.

“Oh, got it,” Caroline replied.

Andrew was visibly upset. “You… Is this how you’re going to treat me?”

Caroline thought to herself, I treat David the same way! You’re nothing.

But she still responded politely, “Is there anything else, Mr. Andrew?”

Andrew stood there, fumbling for words. He had nothing to say, so he created an issue. “I need you to compile a detailed formula for the Caroz products and give it to me before you leave today.”

“Sorry,” Caroline replied. “The detailed formula is confidential, so I can’t just give it to you.”

The other colleagues in the department looked over at them.

At this point, Andrew’s pride was taking a hit, and he snapped, “I’m your superior!”

“I know, Mr. Andrew,” Caroline smiled. “How about this? I’ll give the formula to Mr. Boris or Mr. Ellison. You can ask them for it. How does that sound?”

Andrew was left speechless.

“Mr. Andrew. Mr. Andrew? I’m just following company policy. Do you have a problem with that?”

Andrew glared at her darkly. “Fine, whatever.”

Caroline smiled as she watched Andrew walk away.

She realized that she was gaining more confidence and presence, and wondered if it was because of how much time she’d spent around David.

Maybe it was something she’d learned from him.

Caroline looked away and noticed Anna sitting at her computer, filling out a form.

“What’s this form?” she asked. “You’re really focused on it.”

“It’s the health checkup form,” Anna replied. “Didn’t you see the announcement? We all have to do it. Caroline, didn’t you get the notice?”

Caroline opened her email to check, but there was nothing.

That was strange.

Caroline refused. “There’s no need. I’m just like everyone else.”

“This is Mr. Ellison’s request, Mrs. Ellison. Please don’t make this difficult for me.”

William continued, “With over a thousand employees in Ellison Group, just waiting in line would be a hassle for you. Mr. Ellison is just looking out for you, so please accept his kind gesture.”
