Chapter 24 Which Hand Do You Want to Lose?
Caroline was startled and turned around.
Why is David back?
At this hour, he should still be at the office.
Standing nearby, Paul hung his head low, avoiding eye contact. In an instant, Caroline understood.
Someone had tipped him off.
âI warned you,â David said in a deep, raspy voice, ânot to touch her.â His piercing gaze locked onto Caroline. âDid you take my words as a joke?â
At the sound of Davidâs arrival, Elizabeth immediately switched from her overbearing attitude to one of feigned fragility.
âMr. Davidâ¦â Elizabeth collapsed to the ground, propping herself up with her hands. âI came to see my sister, hoping to clear the air between us. But before I could even speak, she started cursing at meâand then she hit me.â
Tears streamed down her face as she crawled to Davidâs side, throwing herself into his arms.
âItâs my fault,â she sobbed. âCaroline has every right to be upset. Please donât blame her, Mr. David.â
Her textbookâperfect performance as a victim left Caroline utterly speechless.
What a shameless actâturning black into white and making herself the victim.
David glanced down at Elizabeth in his arms. His lips tightened as if he wanted to push her away but ultimately restrained himself.
She had, after all, just been âwronged.â
âI only wanted to help you, Mr. David,â Elizabeth said, her voice soft and saccharine. âI didnât want to
trouble you with everything. I thought I could share some of the burden. But Carolineâs temper is just too much for me to handleâ¦â
David gave a faint âhmmâ in response.
Caroline, watching this scene unfold was dumbfounded.
They were embracing?
Elizabeth had managed to cozy up to David this quickly, and he didnât reject her?
Unbelievable.
These two⦠A pair of despicable traitors!
No wonder Elizabeth had been so smug, daring to come and cause a sceneâshe had Davidâs permission.
âMy wrist hurts, Mr. David,â Elizabeth whimpered, holding her hand out to him. âCaroline twisted it.â

David arched a brow. âShould I have her wrist broken to even the score?â

Elizabethâs eyes gleamed with satisfaction, though she pretended to hesitate. âNo, that wouldnât be rightâ¦â
âWith me here, no one can bully you, not even Carolineâ
At his signal, two bodyguards stepped forward and restrained Caroline, forcing her to stand before him.
Davidâs gaze was cold and merciless. âWhich hand do you want to lose? The left or the right?â
Caroline glared at him. âYouâre going to cripple my hand⦠For her?â
âYes,â David replied without hesitation. âThe fact Iâm not taking both is already a mercy.â
Carolineâs fury surged. She wanted nothing more than to spit in his face!
Elizabeth, nestled smugly in Davidâs arms, watched the scene unfold with glee.
Go on, do it. She was eager for the show.
When Caroline didnât respond, David turned to Elizabeth. âYou pick for her.â
Elizabeth dropped her pretense. âThe right hand. Thatâs the one she uses the most. Without it, she wonât even be able to hold cutlery.â
David gave a curt nod. âYou heard her,â he ordered the bodyguards. âDo it.â
âYes, Mr. David,â one replied, stepping forward.
Paul hesitated, speaking up timidly, âSir, if Madam Harper and Mr. Richard find out about this, they mightâ¦â
âHmm?â Davidâs voice sharpened. Too much talking.â
Paul sighed and stepped back, silenced.
What a joke, Caroline thought bitterly, biting her lip. Her own husband was cradling her stepsister while ordering her hand to be destroyed.
She would never let that happen.
Summoning a sudden burst of strength from whoâknowsâwhere, Caroline wrenched herself free from the bodyguards!
