Chapter 222 The Last Thing I Said to You Last Night
Caroline let out a breath, her memories slowly piecing themselves back together.
Finished
But as she lowered her gaze, she noticed something strangeâher clothes had been changed into pajamas, and her wounds had been carefully treated and bandaged.
She had passed out last night. Then what? What had happened after that?David⦠called the servants to change my clothes? Called a doctor to treat my injuries?
âThis⦠doesnât seem like him,â Caroline murmured to herself. âHe shouldâve just left me in the car, as long as I didnât die. Or maybe he wouldâve just shaken me awake and walked away like nothing happenedâ¦â
For some reason, her mind drifted back to the words David had said last night. âLetâs change the game.â
A sudden chill ran down her spine, goosebumps rising on her skin.
âMadam,â a voice came from the door. âAre you awake? Itâs time for breakfast.â
âIâm coming!â
Caroline quickly freshened up, changed her clothes, and headed downstairs.
To her surprise, David was still at home.
He was sitting on the living room sofa, a cup of tea resting beside him.
It was rare to see him so leisurely.
If he wasnât at the Ellison Group, he was holed up in his study, buried in work.
Seeing her, David glanced at his watch. âYou slept long enough.â
âYou⦠why are you still home?â
âTo keep you company.â
Caroline had just stepped off the last stair when she heard those words.
She nearly tripped over her own feet.
Did I hear that right? Is this real life? Not a dream? David just said⦠he was staying to keep me company? What the heck was he up to? Was this his idea of âchanging the gameâ? Annoying me to death?
âMadam, be careful.â A nearby servant quickly reached out to steady her. âPlease take your time.â
Caroline waved her off, regaining her balance. She didnât even dare look at Davidâshe turned on her heel and practically ran into the dining room.
She needed to stay away from him.
Who knew what he was scheming this time?
Watching her flee, David frowned. Sheâs avoiding me? Why? I havenât even done anything to her since we came back last night. Could it be⦠because of what I said before she fell asleep? âMaybe I really do love you.â Is that why sheâs

Chapter 222 The Last Thing I Said to You Last Night
David rose from his seat and followed her into the dining room.
Caroline was drinking porridge when, out of the corner of her eye, she caught sight of his figure approaching.
She nearly choked. Why wonât he go away?
Finished
David pulled out a chair beside her and sat down. Without hesitation, he asked, âAre you avoiding me?â
âHuh?â Caroline looked completely baffled.
âI askedâdid you hear the last thing I said to you last night?â
âHuh?â
Now she was even more confused. What is he talking about? Why is he acting like a completely different person overnight?
She was so caught off guard that she glanced around the room as if searching for an escape, then discreetly pinched herself.
Ouch. This was real. David must be possessed. And⦠what did he say to me last night?
Caroline racked her brain, but no matter how hard she tried, she couldnât remember.
She only had a vague recollection of their conversationâshe didnât remember which sentence came first or last.
After all, she had been on edge, overwhelmed, and barely thinking straight.
Seeing her struggle, Davidâs expression darkened.
âYou lost your memory?â He scoffed. âDo you need a doctor to check your brain?â
That sarcastic toneâfinally, something familiar.
Caroline exhaled.
At least she was still in reality.
