Chapter 220 Letâs Change the Game

David asked, âIf I had been two minutes late and the baby was gone, what would you have done?â
âYou already know⦠what I would have done.â
He lifted his gaze to hers, their eyes locking in the dimly lit space.
In the silence, they could hear each otherâs quiet breaths.
Caroline suddenly raised her hand, hooking her arms around Davidâs neck. She clung to his shoulders and spoke softly, her voice barely above a whisper. âIâll say it again. As long as the baby lives, I live. If the baby dies, I die.â
Then, now, and foreverâhe can dream if he thinks heâll ever take my child away.
His arm tightened around her waist, pulling her closer.
A low chuckle rumbled from his chest. âCaroline, letâs change the game.â
âGame?â
She blinked, her lips curling into a silent, bitter smile.
Iâm struggling to survive, fighting with everything I have. Itâs exhausting, miserable, and agonizing. But to Davidâ¦
Itâs just a game. A leisurely game for him to enjoy watching me flail, watching me suffer in the palm of his hand. How amusing.
Once again, Caroline was struck by the vast chasm between them.
She couldnât even control her own fate.
But David⦠he had the power to dictate the lives of so many others. In this game, Iâm just a pawn. But heâs the one playing the board.
âYouâre right,â David murmured. âThis game is getting dull.â
He smirked. âDonât worry, I wonât let you die. If you died⦠what fun would that be?â
âYou-â
His fingertip pressed lightly against her lips. âShh. Just play along, Caroline. Youâre getting more interesting by the day.â
David slowly released her, reaching up to tuck a stray strand of hair behind her ear. His touch was soft, almost tender.
But all Caroline felt was an unbearable chill.
A suffocating cold seeped into her bones, wrapping around her like a curse.

She wanted to say something, but David had already pulled away, slipping out of the passenger seat and

She watched as he walked around the front of the car, his movements fluid and composed.
Then he slid into the driverâs seat and started the engine.
David did everything with effortless grace. Calm. Poised. Untouched by uncertainty.
Itâs like nothing and no one has ever shaken him. Like heâs incapable of losing control.
âDavid,â Caroline called his name.
âHmm?â
âHave you ever broken down?â she asked. âEver felt truly hopeless? Like you were completely powerless, crushed by something so devastating you couldnât do a thing about it?â
His answer came without hesitation. âNo.â
âThatâs a shame.â Caroline let out a quiet laugh. âYour life has been too smooth. No ups and downs. I hope one day, you get to experience that feeling.â
David chuckled as well. âI wonât. Thereâs nothing in this world that could make me feel that way.â
âOh, you will.â Carolineâs voice was slow and deliberate, laced with certainty. âMaybe not long from now, youâll meet someone who makes you feel it. Someone who drags you from heaven to hell, gives you everything, then rips it all away⦠and youâll never, ever be able to get her back. Youâll be powerless. Destroyed. Like your heartâs been ripped out.â
Just the thought of it makes me feel better.
Let there be someone who can control Davidâjust like he controls everyone else.
David drove with one hand resting lazily on the steering wheel. âSomeone like that, huh? And who would that be?â
