Chapter 20 You Married Me on Purpose
For years, Harper lived quietly in the orphanage, nameless and without status.
Even now, she didnât care about material things. All she wanted was a peaceful life. But David wanted to fight for his motherâs dignity.
If Richard accepted Harper, it meant the entire Ellison family would respect her.
David asked, âWhatâs your condition?â
âRelease Andrew.â
David squinted his eyes.
Richard continued, âHeâs no longer a threat to you. Heâs been defeated, no longer capable of causing trouble. But heâs still my grandson, and I canât watch him rot in prison. As for his mother⦠you can handle her as you see fit.â
Harper and Andrewâs mother had bad blood between them, but that was a long time ago. So, Richard was only able to save Andrew.
âThink about it,â the old man said, patting his shoulder. The Ellison family and Ellison Group are already yours.â
Davidâs thin lips moved. âFine.â
He agreed.
His mother had endured too much pain, ridicule, and rejection in her life. Now it was time for her to live in comfort and dignity. Andrew was just a minor issue. Letting him go didnât matter.
Butâ¦
David glanced sideways. Harper was chatting warmly with Caroline, and his heart sank.
This was the real headache.
With Harperâs support, Caroline would only grow bolder and more impossible to deal with.
As they left the Ellison residence, Harper didnât forget to remind him, âDavid, be good to Caroline, you hear me? Donât just bury yourself in work. Spend time with her, I want a grandchild soon!â
David said nothing.
Harper noticed and gave him a light smack. Only then did he reluctantly mutter, âGot it.â.
The car rolled away slowly.
The air around David seemed to freeze, his expression colder than ice.
âYouâve really outdone yourself, Caroline,â he said coldly.
âWhat did I do now?â she asked, baffled.

âDonât play dumb.â His hand shot out, grabbing her wrist and yanking her toward him. âSo this was your plan all along to marry me on purpose!â
Caroline stared at him, confused. âWhat are you talking about?â
âDonât act innocent,â he sneered. âFirst, you got close to my mother at the orphanage to win her trust. Then, when Grandpa arranged my marriage, you stepped in and became my wife. Youâve been scheming all along, havenât you?â
Carolineâs jaw dropped. Who did he think he was? So full of himself! Did he think Iâd been secretly in love with him for years?
Before she could respond, David pushed her away hard âFine. Iâll make sure you understand the consequences of playing games with me.â
Her head hit the car window with a dull thud. This man clearly didnât know the meaning of âcareâ or âgentle.â
Davidâs frosty gaze landed on her, filled with disdain.
Once he found the woman from that night, Caroline would mean nothing to him.
David stepped into the building of Ellison Group. Everywhere he went, employees greeted him with respect. âGood morning, Mr. David.â
Everyone knew their new CEO was decisive, ruthless, and obsessively focused on his work.
âMr. David,â h
assistant, William, said as he followed closely, âthe Brooks family has been waiting in the conference room since this morning.â
David halted, then immediately turned and headed for the conference room without hesitation.
It seemed Matthew was finally ready to confess what happened that night.
