Chapter 14 Sheâs Pregnant!
Paul hesitated for a moment. âThisâ¦â
âWhatâs the matter?â Harper asked. âIs she not here either?â
âSheâs here, butâ¦â Paul hesitated again. âMs. Caroline angered Mr. David and is being punished in the dark
room.â
Harper gasped. âThis wonât do! A couple should talk things through properly. Even if theyâre divorcing, it shouldnât come to this. Quickly, quickly, go and let her out!â
âButâ¦â
âIf David asks, tell him it was my decision,â Harper instructed. âIâll take responsibility.â
Paul nodded and immediately went to release her. Harper followed along.
The dark room was in the basement of the Ellison residence. It was dim, cold, and damp, with a musty smell in the airânot a place for anyone to stay.
As Paul pulled out the key to unlock the door, Harper asked, âHow long has she been in there?â
âThree or four days. And Mr. David forbade us from bringing her any food or water, so the madam is very weak.â
Hearing this, Harper hesitated.
She wondered if she should even meet Caroline.
Davidâs actions were excessive; Caroline must harbor resentment.
Moreover, relationships between mothersâinâlaw and daughtersâinâlaw were usually strained, especially in cases like this. And Harper was here to persuade her to divorce.
It seemed like bad timing. She decided it was better to leave for now.
âPaul, take her to the hospital for a full checkâup and let her rest properly for a few days,â Harper said. âShe probably doesnât want to see me. Iâll leave first.â
Inside the dark room, Caroline vaguely heard voices outside but couldnât make out what they were saying.
She bit her lip hard, using the pain to stay conscious.
How long does David plan to keep me here? Does he want me to die?
As her thoughts grew fuzzy, someone picked her up.
âHurry, take her to the hospital. Madam Harper has given the order; donât delayâ¦â
Carolineâs vision went dark, and she lost consciousness completely.
When she woke up again, she was lying in a hospital bed with an IV drip in her hand.

Chapter 14 Sheâs Pregnant!
David, that devil⦠She needed a divorce. Straight to the ivil office to finalize it!
Finished
âMaâain, youâre awake,â Paul said. âThanks to Madam Harper, otherwise your life would have been in danger.â
âWhoâs Madam Harper?â
âMr. Davidâs mother. She saved you.â
David might be awful, but his mother seemed kindâhearted.
Caroline propped herself up against the bed, sipped some warm water, and ate a little. Slowly, she began to regain her strength.
As she stared blankly at the IV bag, the doctor suddenly walked in.
âMaâam, are you feeling any discomfort?â
âMuch better,â Caroline replied. âOnce the IV finishes, can I go home?â
The doctorâs expression turned strange. âAre you sure you donât feel anything unusual?â
Caroline frowned. âShould I⦠feel something?â
Without answering, the doctor handed her a report.
The words on the page stood out in bold clarity. âFour weeks pregnant.â
What? I was pregnant!
Caroline couldnât believe her eyes.
âThis was discovered when we ran your bloodwork,â the doctor explained. âFortunately, the fetus is healthy and doing well. Congratulations, maâam, youâre going to be a mother.â
Carolineâs mind went blank. She couldnât think at all.
Four weeks pregnant⦠Calculating the timing, it must have happened on her wedding night at the hotel!
Which meant⦠The childâs father wasnât David at all!
