Caroline replied with defiance, “I’m not the kind of woman you think I am. Do you even realize what your situation was when I married you? If marrying you was such a great honor, would it have been my turn?”

The more she spoke, the darker David’s expression grew.

No one had ever dared to act so boldly in front of him.

It seemed she needed to be taught a lesson.

“Go on, keep talking,” David crossed his arms, his gaze sharp and cold. “Let me hear your honest thoughts.”

“David, you’re powerful and untouchable now, but back then, you couldn’t find a single person in the entire city willing to be your wife. You know that better than anyone.”

“Should I be thanking you for your kindness?” David raised an eyebrow, his tone mocking. “Hmm?”

“No, that’s not necessary. We…”

Before Caroline could finish, David interrupted her with a cruel smirk. “It is necessary.”

He leaned in slightly, his tone turning icier. “Do you need me to remind you what happens to those who oppose me?”

Caroline’s heart sank.

Her adoptive siblings, Marilyn and Andrew, were still locked away in prison, their fate entirely in David’s hands.

Anyone who had once doubted or underestimated him had already vanished without a trace…

David’s ruthlessness had been on full display when he seized control of the Ellison family.

And here she was, foolishly provoking him in a moment of emotional outburst.

This was bad.

“You should spend some time reflecting, David said coldly, his words deliberate and unyielding. “My wife.”

Who gave her the courage to confront him like this?

Her sharp edges needed to be dulled, her defiance crushed.

“Someone come here.”

“Yes, Sir.”

“Lock her in the dark room,” David ordered without a trace of emotion. “She can come out when she knows what she did wrong.”

“Yes, Sir.”

And just like that, Caroline was thrown into a pitch–black room, the heavy door slammed shut and locked

Paul came by to check on her. “Ma’am, just apologize. Admit your mistake. Maybe Mr. David will let you

out.”

But Caroline refused to lower her head.

As a result, David cut off all her access to food and water.

At first, she endured. But as time dragged on, her strength began to wane.

Paul visited daily, asking the same question. “Ma’am, Mr. David wants to know. Do you realize what you did wrong?”

Exhausted and weak, Caroline lay on the cold floor, barely able to lift her head. She murmured faintly, “My mistake… Was marrying him.”

Paul sighed heavily before locking the door and leaving

Caroline knew exactly what David wanted to hear.

He wanted her to surrender, to bow her head in submission. He wanted to make it clear that her life, her choices, everything about her was under his control.

He wouldn’t be satisfied until she wholeheartedly acknowledged his dominance.

But Caroline couldn’t do it.

The Brooks family had humiliated, betrayed, and exploited her, and she endured because she owed them a debt of gratitude for raising her. But that debt was repaid, and she wouldn’t let them control her

anymore.

As for David? She owed him nothing.

Especially since they were on the verge of divorce. Soon, they would part ways, living separate lives. She would regain her freedom, both in body and soul.

Caroline licked her parched lips, determination flickering in her

eyes.

At the Ellison residence, in the living room.

Paul returned from the dark room and was surprised to see Harper sitting on the sofa.

“Madam Harper, if we had known you were coming, we would’ve prepared to welcome you properly,” Paul said, hurrying to greet her, “Please forgive us for any oversight.”

“It’s fine,” Harper replied casually. “I decided to visit on a whim.”

It’s truly unfortunate. Mr. David has gone to the office and isn’t home.”

“I’m not here to see him” Harner said with a smile. “I came to meet his new wife”
