Luna stared at him. âSo, all this timeâ¦â Her eyes filled with tears. âYou were in his employ and you were my brother?â
He again, nodded. âI couldnât let him catch on. I had to remain cold about you and Colette. I went looking for her as soon as she disappeared. But he called me back for a job.â
âYes, tell us what kind of job?â Ace asked as he raised a brow at him.
Traven looked over at the very large Ace. âI hunt people down for him, but mostlyâ¦I would be his security at meetings and the like. Or go and strong arm someone for him.â
âAnd he never caught on to who you really were.â Luna stared at him.
âNever did, but someday⦠I will look him in the eye when I slit his throat like he did to my â¦â he paused to look at her. ââ¦our father.â
âI canât believeâ¦â Luna let out a slow breath. âWell, it is a relief to know that I am not of his blood. No wonder he treated us like he did.â
âYes, but you both looked so much like your mother⦠he wanted to keep you around, even though the sight of you made him angry at the same time.â
âIt is so sick!â Luna felt enraged. âTaking us from our real family then raising us to be pawns for him.â
Shay stood and walked over to Traven.
Traven stared at him.
âYou took a chance coming here,â Shay stated quietly.
Travern gave him a slow nod.
âWhat do you mean?â Luna turned to Shay.
âHeâs known as the Mercenary,â Shay stated.
Luna looked from Shay to Traven. âWhat does that mean?â
Ace stepped closer, looking very curious now. âWell, damn.â
King shook his head. âWhat the hell man? Why would you come out in the open like this?â
Traven stood quietly. Apparently, he wouldnât say.
âWhat are you all talking about?â Luna asked again.
Deuce let out a heavy breath. âYour brother isâ¦â
âIs what?â she asked looking at him and then at the other men.
âIâm a killer, mostly,â Traven spoke quietly.
âYeah, wanted in maybe twenty states,â Shay stated.
Luna gasped.
King was the one to explain, âBut he only kills people whoâ¦wellâ¦â
Luna stomped her foot. âWould you all tell me what the fuck you are talking about?â
âHe is like a vigilante,â Deuce finally answered her. âAt least, as far as we know and many lawmen know. The public doesnât know this however.â
âRight,â Shay continued, âTracks down serial killers. Finds them, kills them in the same way they killed.â
Luna blinked at Shay then turned to Traven. âI-is this true?â
âMostly,â was all he would say. âIt is what I meant when I said I should not come in here.â
âBecause you werenât righteous enough, you said,â Luna reminded him.
âRighteous?â King asked. âMan, you have saved so many livesââ
ââand I have taken many,â Traven cut him off. âMy hands are covered in blood.â
âNot blood of lambs,â King reminded him. âThe blood of killers. Torturers, child killers. I would call that righteous. Man, you are an infamous legend. Cops even praise youâ¦well, off the record that is.â
Luna stared at her brother. âBut I know why you did it. You were righting a wrong. Like what happened to our father.â
âIt doesnât excuse it though,â Ace piped up. âTaking the law into your own hands.â
âOh man, here we go again, with that,â Deuce grumbled.
âNo, he is right,â Traven stated. âI am just as fucked up as any killer is.â
Luna stared at him. âI refuse to believe that.â
âSo why didnât you kill the bastard while you were there for seven god damned years?â Deuce asked. âThen Collette would still be alive and Luna would have been safe.â
Traven swung his gaze over to him. âJedidiah had a standing order. If he was killed, his assassins were to kill both the girls immediately. It was an automatic order. Placed years back. I came to find that out after the first few months I was there.â
They all went silent as they soaked this bit of terror in.
Traven now stared at Shay. âIf you intend to arrest me. Now is your chance.â
Shay stared back at him. âNo⦠Iâm busy enough at the moment. Left my cuffs in my other suit, Iâm afraid. Iâm not FBI either, alsoâ¦â He sighed. âI donât want to be the lawman to take you down.â
Just then, a noise came from the hall.
They all turned to see a sleepy Annabelle holding onto her large fluffy puppy. She looked around at them all confused as to why they were all up in the middle of the night.
Jade came down the hall from behind her and stopped to see the strange man in the living room. She grabbed the little girlâs hand.
Luna swung her gaze from them to Traven.
His eyes stayed glued to Annabelle. âH-how⦠can this be?â
âWhat?â Luna asked, though she knew somehow that he could see it. The resemblance to her and Collette.
âShe looks like you andâ¦Collette. Like our mother in fact.â He turned to Luna. âThis is the child your sister had.â
Luna slowly nodded. âShe is your niece.â
âI know. Iâve been looking for herâ¦â He seemed to get a little choked up as his cold mask slipped a little.
âYou knew about her?â Luna asked in surprise.
He nodded. âShe was all that we had left of Collette. One of the reasons I didnât kill Whittaker after she disappeared. I felt like we would never find the child if I killed him. But I couldnât find her, myself.â
âYou should meet her,â Luna suggested.
He took a step back. âNo, as long as she is safe and out of their grasp. That is good enough.â He then looked expressionless again. âWith Gunther and Gauntlet gone, she should be safe enough. Now, Whitaker is in jail.â He looked over at Shay. âBut he will be out by tomorrow. So, you need to get ready.â
Shay blinked. âNo, he cannot raise bail and his attorneyââ
ââhe will be out by noon tomorrow,â Traven cut him off. âBy thenâ¦â He turned his gray eyes to Deuce. âYou all need to get away from this farm.â He looked to Ace, King, and all the men. âAll of you need to leave.â
âUntil when?â King asked.
âYou will know when,â Traven stated.
âNow listen here,â Shay started. âWe will bring him up on charges and he will go to prison. You donât need to go after him. Let the law take care of it.â
Traven stared at him, his eyes hard as steel. âOften, the law has failed. Does fail. I am telling you nowâ¦He will be out of the country by 5 pm. Tomorrow. After he is sure, you are all dead. So, your way wonât work this time. Sometimes, the only way to stop evil is toâ¦â He tuned his head to meet Lunaâs gaze. ââ¦become evil.â He again, looked around at the brothers. âYou are all military men. Sometimes to protect what is yours means you need to retreat, take your women with you. He will storm this place with the very weapons his company makes. Do not be here when he does.â
âWait a minute,â Charli spoke up now as she came forward. âYou mean to say he will destroy my farm?â
Traven stared down at her. âThat, and anything here.â
Charli gasped.
Ace came up to stand by her as he put his arm around her.
She turned to him. âI-I canât lose this place. I canât!â
âIâm sorry.â Traven sighed hard. âIt is the other reason why I came, to warn you. He had resources that even you cannot find. Widowmakerâ¦â He looked around again. âHe carries that name for a reason. He thought it up after he killed my father, leaving my mother as a widow. He thought it to be clever.â Hate glowed in his steely eyes as he spoke, âHe lives by the name too. Clear out, if you care for your lives.â He turned to leave.
Luna reached out to him. âWait! When will I see you again? I want to get to know you. The real you. I mean⦠I always wanted a brotherââ
Traven stepped further away from her. âI wonât be one to you. I canât be.â
âW-what?â
âIt is for your best interest,â Traven said.
âMy bestâ¦â Luna looked angry. âThat sounds suspiciously the same as what my fake father always told me. Well, listen here busterâ¦â She stepped close and poked her finger into his chest. âI will decide whatâs best for me and I think having a brother would beââ
He caught her hand. âI only came here to see you one last time. To cut that tracker out of you, soâ¦â He raised his gaze and met Deuceâs. âHe can take you somewhere safe until I can finally end Whittaker.â He raised her hand and rubbed his rough cheek with it. âI wished I could have saved Collette. He had me out on a job in another country when he did that to her. Then I never knew where she went. Until it was too late.â He looked into Lunaâs eyes. âBut I promise you. He will end up like Gunther and Gauntlet.â He dropped her hand and stepped back.
âWait! Donât leave!â Luna reached for him.
Traven gave Deuce a nod of his head, then turned and went out the door.
âNO!â Luna cried out.
Deuce caught her and kept her from following.
Luna felt such a loss. First, her sister, then now a brother, she never knew she even had. She jerked her arms away from Deuce.
He stared at her sadly. âIâm sorry but where that man goes, you cannot follow.â
Sighing, she swiped her tears away. âI hope heâ¦â Her words faded away. She didnât know what to feel. That he would come back? She knew he wouldnât. He was adamant about that part.
Ace, Shay, Joker and King stepped over to Deuce and her.
âBrother,â Ace spoke up, as he looked troubled.
âI know,â Deuce replied with a heavy sigh and a glare in his eyes. âWe all need to move to the safe house.â
