Before I Met You

I shut the door behind me and let out a sigh of relief. I can't believe Caleb smuggled illegal drugs and his father got a death sentence. "Do you not care that your father will die?" I ask sitting down on my bed.

"Dani, he's hurt a lot of people including my family. Whatever he's getting, he deserves it. I know he's my father but he was never there for any of my childhood events, which is why I don't have a connection with him. He would just hit my mom and abuse Natalia and I. He was more of a monster than a father." He explains taking my hand.

"My father died when I was six. He was a pilot and his plane crashed on the ride from Canada to Portugal. I had just come back from my ballet classes and I heard the news that he died. I never really got to spend that much time with him but whenever he was around, we would go out for the entire day." I shut my eyes letting the tears stream down my face.

"He would take me to my favourite ice cream shop and we would race to see who could eat them the fastest and of course my dad let me win. He would teach me how to waltz on his tip toes. I would stand on them and he would dance around the room to House Of Cards by Tyler Shaw. It was our favourite song to dance to." I continue and he squeezes my hand tighter.

"He told me to make sure that the boy I dance with on this song is special to me. That's why on the day I first kissed you at the party, that was the song that was playing. You're special to me Caleb." I speak out.

"Thank you." He says with tears in his eyes. He hugs me tightly and I let the tears flow out. A thought pops into my head and I think about it for a while before asking. "Caleb, what happened to your last girlfriend." I ask looking up at him.

"I guess today we're sharing all of our secrets." He chuckles but then stiffens.

"There was this girl I had met in sophomore year, her name was Kira. She was like a rose petal, her cheeks would have a tint of red on them and whoever had her as a friend, always felt calm, just the way a rose makes you feel." He stutters a little and pauses before continuing.

"I asked her out to a school dance and she said yes. It was the happiest I had been in a long time. After the dance, we started dating and we broke up in junior year. I treated her with care and bought her so many gifts. I would make her meals and help her with her homework. She meant a lot to me at the time." He looks up at the ceiling and shuts his eyes.

"One day, I was coming over for a tutoring session and her mom let me in. I walked into her room and I saw her with another guy. She shattered my heart completely. She was the first girl I had ever loved and I treated her with so much care. After she had cheated, it messed me up so much. I started sleeping with girls and drinking a lot. Then because of Blake, we had to move houses since he knew where we lived. I was happy about it because then I could start fresh." He holds my hand tightly and wipes away his tears.

"Then I met you and my entire world flipped around. That's why I was so afraid of committing to you because I thought you would just leave me. With you, I had to take the leap of faith. I love you Dani." I attack him into a hug and hold him tightly. "I'm so sorry." He kisses my cheek and wipes away my tears.

"Since you've been so honest, I might as well tell you what happened with me. His name was Jay. We met in freshmen year and he was my best friend for the longest time. Him, Ally, and I were inseparable. Jay and I liked each other for a while and he asked me out one day. We dated and everything was perfect, until it wasn't. I went out with Ally to the mall and I saw Jay and another girl kissing at the mall. I then went up to the girl after he left and asked her who she was. She said that she's been his girlfriend for three years." I take a deep breath before continuing.

"I explained her everything and she and I both broke up with him. Jay kept coming back and begged me to take him back so I did. He cheated on me again and I ended things with him for good before he moved away." I say in between tears.

"Dani, I'm so sorry. I promise I'll never cheat on you." He says holding my cheek and wiping away tears. "I know you won't." I give him a small smile and look into his eyes. We both just look at each other for a while and in my heart I knew that it felt right.
