Romeo and Juliet

"Get up! You're going to be late on the first day of school!" My mom yells at me while snatching away the blankets exposing me to the cold air. I groan into the pillow and get up rubbing my eyes. Today is the first day of senior year and I'm not very excited. Let's just say I don't roll with the cool crowd. I don't really have many friends and no one notices me. I actually don't mind it though. The less friends you have, the less bullshit you have to deal with right?

I look at myself in the mirror and scrunch my nose. I brush my teeth and hop into the shower. Once I'm out, I pick out a nice outfit; a cute maroon peplum top and black tights. I slip on my white converse and grab an apple. "Bye mom!" I call before shutting the door close.

I get inside my Mini Cooper Convertible and put on some music. It's not the best car in the world but I really  like it. I click shuffle play and unpredictable by 5SOS comes on. My music taste is mostly pop and R&B. I'm not a huge fan of rap music but I listen to it time to time.

I pull up to school and park my car. I walk into the doors and my best friend Alessia comes up to hug me. "Dani, I haven't seen you in ages!!!" She squeals. "We just saw each other last week." I snicker at her excitement. "It's been forever." She says walking up to her locker and I follow her. Alessia has straight dark brown hair with light green eyes. She's a girly girl like me but we don't show up to school in a face full of makeup and mini skirts. We keep our fashion outside of school.

"What classes do you have?" She asks me as I pull my schedule out of my bag. "Um, I have English, Math, Drama, and Chemistry. What do you have?" I say peering at her schedule. "Biology, Math, Product Design, and English." She says smiling. "We only have math class together. Damn it!" I groan stomping my feet like a child.

"Who's that?" Alessia asks me looking over to a guy in a black leather jacket with his mouth attached to a girl. "I don't know. He's probably new because I've never seen him before. Plus, he's sucking face with a girl already." I state rolling my eyes looking at the boy with brown hair and brown eyes. He's actually kind of cute and that's rare for me to say because I don't pay too much attention to boys. Boys don't notice me so I don't take too much notice into them either.

The bell rings and everyone scatters to their classes. I sigh and make my way over to English class. I take the seat at the back near the window. I don't really like the front since all the weird people sit there.

The teacher enters the classroom and everyone takes their seats. He takes attendance and talks about his boring summer break and how he dropped his phone in the toilet.

Someone opens the door and everyone's eyes are on the new kid. It's the same boy I saw making out with another girl. "Why are you late?" The teacher cocks an eyebrow at him. He smirks and replies "I'm new and got lost." Lies. He was making out with someone. He walks over to the back of the class and takes a seat in the desk next to me. I shift in my seat and look straight ahead. "What's your name?" The teacher asks with no expression. "Caleb. Caleb Ryder." He says winking at one of the girls. Gag.

"We are having a project." The teacher announces and the whole class groans. "And I'm picking the pairs." The class groans louder at his second comment and this time I groan as well. "You guys will be doing a sequel to Romeo and Juliet. You guys will be asked to act out a new ending to the story. Now let me assign your pairs." He explains and I put my head in my hands. This isn't even English. This is Drama. "Ashley and Sarah." The teacher starts and the girls wink at each other. I don't know anyone in the class so I'm alone. I wonder who I'm going to be paired with. Please don't be a weird boy. "Daniella and Caleb." He says and I freeze. Are you serious? I glance at Caleb and he catches my eye. "Are you Daniella?" He says staring at me. I nod my head and weakly smile at him. The bell rings and everyone rushes out of the class,

Next is math class which I have with Alessia so hopefully it won't be as bad. Once I spot her I sit into the seat next to her. "How was first period?" She asks me. "Horrible. I got paired with the new kid." She laughs and sits in her seat. This class goes by pretty quickly and now it's lunch time.

I put my stuff into my locker and wait for Alessia. "Wanna eat outside?" I ask holding my sandwich in my hand. She nods and we push the doors open. We sit on a bench and catch up with each other.

The rest of the day went by pretty fast. Drama was fun but I have Chemistry with Caleb which sucks. He doesn't seem like a bad person but it's just that he gives off the 'bad boy' look.

"Mom, I'm home!" I yell and set my bag on the chair. "Hey honey, how was your first day?" Mom asks putting a plate of cut apples in front of me. "It was good. Alessia is only in one of my classes." I slouch on the couch picking up a slice of apple.

After I was done eating I went upstairs to do my homework. I sit on my desk and take out my binder. I notice a truck pulling up to my neighbors driveway. Oh right, my neighbours moved a couple weeks ago so I guess we're getting new neighbours. They probably moved in yesterday because in the truck there's small delicate things and not the main drawers or anything. I notice a boy and his mom standing outside with his sister. He looks familiar. He turns around and looks up to his house. My eyes go wide. Caleb Ryder? He is my new neighbour? No this can't be happening.

"Dani!" Mom yells from downstairs. It's been a couple hours and I've finished my homework. "Yes!" I yell back. I walk downstairs to see what my mom needs. She holds out some cupcakes that's she was baking earlier. "We're going to meet the new neighbours!" Mom says happily. No, this can't be happening. "Why do I have to come?" I whine crossing my arms like a little kid. "You have to. Also Tyler is coming with us." Tyler is my younger brother. He's a junior at our school. Tyler who is sitting in the living room comes over when he heard his name. "Do we have to go?" He whines. "There is a boy and girl around your age so it won't be that boring." Mom states pointing to the door telling us to shut up and come with her. I groan and put on my shoes. This is going to be fun. Sarcasm.

Mom rings the door bell and I mentally curse myself. I would rather be knee deep in poop then see Caleb again. A woman in her 40s opens the door with a bright smile on her face. "We are your new neighbors and we thought we would come meet you guys." Mom says looking down at the cupcakes. "Oh come in! Make yourself at home. I'll call my kids." I sit on the couch awkwardly fiddling with my fingers. Mom and Mrs. Ryder go to the kitchen to get snacks.

A girl with blonde hair and silver highlights came downstairs wearing a baby pink top and black jeans. She looks nothing like Caleb but she is really pretty. She probably inherited her hair and some of her facial features from her dad. "Hi, I'm Natalia." She sticks her hand out for me to shake it. "I absolutely adore your hair Natalia." I say smiling. I actually do. I've always wanted hair like that but I don't think I could pull it off. "I'm a junior. And I'm guessing you're a senior?" She asks. I nod my head and smile. "My brother Tyler is also a junior." I say pointing to Tyler. "Hi." She sticks her hand out so he could shake it. I don't think they've met. How could you miss a really pretty girl in your grade?

A short few minutes later mom and Mrs. Ryder come back with snacks. "I guess you've already met Natalia." She says to us. Caleb comes down the stairs and sees me. "Daniella?" He says with his eyes wide open. "You guys know each other?" Mom pitches in the conversation. "No." I quickly say. "Yeah, she's my girlfriend." My face  turns read and I hide my hair over my face until it settles. "No I'm not." I say glaring at him. "She's in my English and Chemistry class." He announces. This is so embarrassing. "Well why don't you show Daniella around and Natalia you can show Tyler around." Mrs. Ryder cheers. Caleb goes upstairs and I awkwardly follow him. He closes the door and I burst. "1: don't call me Daniella. Call me Dani. 2: why did you have to say I was your girlfriend." He lets out a chuckle and sits on his bed. "Okay DANI, I was joking." He says emphasizing Dani. "My mom is going to kill me if I ever get a boyfriend so don't joke about that." I say sitting beside him. "Well maybe I'll be your first." He smirks and I blush. "Shut up." I lightly punch him in the arm.

"So Romeo and Juliet huh?" He says wiggling his eyebrows. "I really don't want to do that. They die in the end and I hate it. It should've ended with a kiss." I rant looking up at him. "Maybe we could end it like that." My jaw drops and I throw the pillow at him. Is he always like this.

"You and your sister look nothing alike." I say trying to change the subject. "She looks more like my dad." He says. I nod my head and he puts on some music. Still got time by Zayn blares through the speakers and I quickly cover my ears as he turns it down. "I love this song!" I say doing an awkward dance move. He grabs my hand and twirls me around. "We should do Romeo and Juliet to this song." He jokes. "Can I ask you something?" He nods his and and I continue. "I didn't think you would talk to me since your the popular bad boy." I awkwardly say looking at him. He smirks. "I'm not rude like the rest. Yeah, I get with girls but I still respect people. I talk to everyone I'm not mean." He says spinning me around. For some reason his comment made me happy. It's nice to know that someone cares about other people. "Dani!" Mom calls startling Caleb making me drop to the floor. "Ow." I sit up putting my hand on my back. "Sorry." He laughs. He lends me a hand and I take it. "Thanks Caleb, its been nice to get to know you." I grin at him. I walk back downstairs and meet up with Tyler and mom. I glance back up at Caleb and Natalia and exit the door.

I lye down on my bed and close my eyes. I think back to this evening and smile. I can't wait for school tomorrow.
