Mafia Kings: Dario: Chapter 44
Mafia Kings: Dario: Dark Mafia Romance Series
Niccolo came to fetch me. He had the good sense to wait until I was all cried out, though it took nearly an hour for me to stop.
I was already dressed and lying on the bed when I heard a tap at the door. âCome in.â
Niccolo entered and stood there. He looked very sad.
âAre you sure?â he asked quietly.
ââ¦yes.â
âItâs dangerous out there.â
âIâll be fine,â I whispered.
âAlessandra â â
âI canât stay here, not a minute longer,â I said, my voice hitching as the tears threatened to start again. âNot around Dario.â
âLet me send you somewhere else â somewhere safe. Switzerland â France â anywhere in Europe you want to go â â
âI want to go home.â
He paused for a long moment before he said, âIf they come for you⦠and itâs possible they may⦠thereâs nothing I can do to save you. Do you understand?â
âWhy would they come for me?â
Niccolo threw up his hands. âI donât know. Maybe in retaliation for what happened that night in the café.â
âI had nothing to do with that.â
âI know that, but â â
âYou can tell people that Dario brought me here to get information out of me⦠and you can say that he broke me.â I barely stopped a sob from escaping my throat. âAnd it will be the truth.â
âAlessandraâ¦â Niccolo whispered.
âYouâve been kind to me, and I appreciate that.â
âExcept for those threats the first night,â he reminded me with a playful smile.
I laughed in spite of myself.
âExcept for those. But youâve been kind to me ever since.â Then my expression changed, and tears filled my eyes. âPlease⦠be kind to me once more⦠and let me go.â
Niccolo stood there a long time⦠and then he nodded.
âDo you have your things packed?â
The clothes Massimo had bought me in Florence had been left on the street when we ran from the gunmen.
I only had a few dresses Iâd brought from home. If I took them with me, I would remember everything that had happened here.
Like Dario taking them off meâ¦
And making love to me.
âYou can burn them,â I said dully. âAnd all the memories they hold.â
Niccolo sighed heavily⦠then walked over to the bed, gave me a sad smile, and put out his arm.
I smiled sadly back at him⦠took his armâ¦
And he walked me out of the room.
