Chapter Eleven: Sit Still

CLASSY MOTHERF*****S.

"Miss Tatum, you have a call waiting for you downstairs." Nana knocked on my door and I immediately made my way down.

Nana was in front of me as I walk and she handed me the telephone.

"A fine lad is looking for you." She smiled giving me a wink before walking away.

Wait? What? What the fuck?!

I pressed the phone on my ear, "Hello?"

"Hey. I don't know what I'm thinking but..can you wear a dress tonight? When I pick you up? I'd like to take you somewhere." The voice was muffled or maybe I was just becoming deaf,

"Wait, who is this?" I asked.

"You were just kissing me awhile ago and-"

He was doing it in purpose, trying to annoy me. "Ah yes. Enough with the profanities. Wait, are you asking me out on a date?" I whispered.

"I'm afraid I am." He chuckled on the other line and I swear it was the best thing I had ever heard.

"I'll think about it." I kid...sort of.

"What?!" He shouted on the other line, "I'm driving on the way to your house now and I'm just 2 blocks away and you just-"

"I was joking, okay? Jesus find your chill."

"Find my what?"

"Oh I forgot your too old for-"

"Did you just call me old?"

"Enough with this banter" I laughed a little. "Don't pick me up in front of my house or my mother is going to throw a fit. Wait by the oak tree in front of the no parking sign. I'm hanging up now and try to get myself ready." I didn't give him a chance to speak before ending the call.

I paced back to my room to get ready. My heart beating loud that I could hear it pumping blood in my chest.

What the hell am I doing?

I grabbed a dress from my closet. It was a white halter dress and I loved how the cloth felt on my skin so I want to wear it tonight. I paired it with my red ballet flats and I felt good about how my hair was wavy and it wasn't everywhere. I retouched my make up and grabbed my red purse to match where I keep my phone and a compact powder with my credit card.

As I skip the hallways to exit my room I stopped dead on my tracks once I saw my mother her heels tapping against the marbled floor.

"Where do you think you are going?" She asked on a harsh tone.

"I'm going to my friend's house. We have a school project to work on, due on Friday." I lied.

"Do you think I'm stupid to believe that? I wasn't born yesterday, Tatum. I heard you were talking to some boy on the phone."

"I'm old enough to handle my own, Mother!"

"As long as you live under my roof and you eat the food on my table, I have every right to do things according to how I want it to be. I'm your mother!"

"I know what I'm doing!!" I exclaimed before running. Afraid that she might lock me up in my room for answering back. I had to get away. Even just for tonight.

I closed the door shut behind me as I started running towards the old oak tree down the road.

The familiar black sedan was parked in front and Mr. Hemmings was standing near his car leaning against his car door. He's still wearing a suit, different from fish church clothes from awhile ago. He looked very intimidating as usual.

My footsteps were the only thing being heard in the silence of the neighborhood.

He looked up and smiled. I didn't know how to address him as I walked closer.

"Good evening, Mr. Hemmings." I exclaimed. My nails digging on my white dress, nervously.

"You look ravishing, Tate." He smiled placing his hand on my waist as he lead me to the other side of the door. I want surprised when he opened it for me, I was used to him being a gentleman after all.

He started the car's engine and the stereo.

A rock song started playing and he sang along.

I took a grip on the end of my skirt. A little more louder and Luke could hear my heart beat. I need to calm myself down.

"..when September ends-" He sang loudly, I don't know this song and I've never heard it but I'm a hundred percent sure that he is out of tune.

"C'mon, Miss Beck! Sing with me!" He chuckled and he continued singing.

I was still silent.

"Tate, sing with me!" He whined like a kid.

"I don't know that song" I blurted.

"What?!" He practically screamed before hitting hard on the breaks. I almost flew out of the window if I hadn't been wearing my seatbelts on. "How can you not know Green Day?!" He asked before I could even collect and pull myself together.

"I don't listen to music or even the radio." I honestly answered.

He shook his head in disbelief. He started driving once again.

"Why?"

"My mother wouldn't let me. She said its unlady like."

"You always do what your mother tells you too."

"I have to but I don't. Not all the time." I answered in a whisper.

Silence was back and it was kicking me in the ass as more rock songs played in the stereo.

Luke started laughing to himself.

"What's funny?" I asked afraid that he might be laughing at me.

"I just remembered funny things."

"Funny things? Like what?"

"Would you believe that when I was younger around 18 I was in a famous band?"

"No." I answered bluntly and tried not to laugh.

"Yeah you're right its unbelievable. It was a joke I wasn't in a band-"

"Then why are you laughing by yourself? plus I knew you weren't because you sang off key awhile ago." I teased, He laughed.

"I just find this funny."

"Funny?"

"Yes."

"Because?"

"I'd never thought that I would take you out on a date like this."

My cheeks started to burn and I know I'm turning crimson red.

"I find this funny too." I laughed

"Why?"

"Never thought you would take me out on a date like this too." He scratched his neck as soon as the words left my mouth, "W-where are we going anyway?" I tried to shrug the butterflies in my stomach off.

"You'll see, were almost there anyway." He turned to the left and more and more trees were seen.

"But there's nothing but more trees in here. Are you going to kill me because this place gives me the creeps."

"I'm a rich man, my love. If I wanted to murder you I will ask someone to do so and pay him. I won't get my hands dirty." He chuckled.

"Just a thought" I exclaimed. Wait did he just call me, my love?

"Were here!" He smiled and even in the darkness in the car I could still see his pearly whites. After an hour and a half of driving with nothing else to see but giant trees and more road.

I took a peek out of the window to see what he was smiling about.

My eyes widened at the beautiful sight.

"A drive-in theatre???" I exclaimed in disbelief. I've never been into one and this is one of my things that I want to do in my bucket list.

"I knew you'd like it."

"How'd you know?"

"I just get the feeling you will." He smiled as he place his hand on top of mine that was resting on my knee.

There was a huge white wall upfront and cars and a projector.

I was in awe but unfortunately I was cut off when I heard Mr. Hemmings opening the window on his side.

"Mr. Hemmings-" a security guard exclaimed taking off his hat to salute on Luke, "Good evening."

"Leo, good evening. Would you be of help, do you know where my reserved parking is?"

"Yes sir. Right here if you would follow me." Leo exclaimed and he took a ride on his motorcycle.

Luke drove a little and after 2 left turns a right we were on his reserved parking space.

"What movie are we going to watch?" I asked. I couldn't hide the excitement in my voice.

"50 Shades of Grey." He muttered eyes fixated on the screen as the last movie is still showing its credits.

"Is it scary?"

He laughed, "Are you joking?"

I furrowed my brows. "No, what is that movie about?"

"You'll see."
