--THE CURSED ENERGY PULSED AGAIN, heavier and more oppressive than before. The sound of creaking metal grew louder, sharper, until it seemed to come from every direction at once. Then, out of the shadows, the animatronics emerged.
They weren't the cheerful mascots they'd once been. Their faded, chipped paint and cracked plastic faces looked grotesque under the dim light, their glowing red eyes fixed on the group. A towering, skeletal bear-like figure led the charge, its rusted joints squealing as it moved. Behind it, a gang of similarly broken-down animatronicsâclowns, a cartoonish dragon, and even a humanoid bunnyâlurched toward them with terrifying speed.
"What the hell is that?!" Nobara shouted, pointing her hammer at the approaching horde.
"Animatronics," Megumi muttered, his expression grim as he summoned his cursed energy. "Of course."
The bear let out a guttural, mechanical roar that echoed through the park, shaking the ground beneath their feet. Without warning, the animatronics surged forward, their metal limbs clanking and sparking as they moved.
"Scatter!" Megumi shouted, already moving to intercept one of the clowns.
"No, stay together!" Misa yelled, but it was too late. Nobara followed Megumi, nails already flying as she shouted curses at the advancing enemies.
The bear turned its glowing eyes toward Yuji and Misa, letting out another bone-chilling roar as it charged.
"Run!" Yuji grabbed Misa's hand without hesitation, pulling her along as he broke into a sprint.
Misa stumbled slightly, caught off guard by the sudden movement, but quickly regained her footing. "What about the others?!"
"They'll be fine!" Yuji shouted over his shoulder. "They're strongâjust focus on not getting eaten!"
The animatronics thundered after them, their mechanical growls and screeches echoing through the air. Misa risked a glance back and immediately regretted itâthe bear was unnervingly fast, its jagged teeth gnashing as it closed the gap.
"Yuji, that thing is gaining on us!" she shouted, cursing under her breath.
"Don't worry!" Yuji tightened his grip on her hand, his voice steady despite the chaos. "We'll lose itâjust trust me!"
Misa didn't reply, but the determined look on his face made her heart skip. Against her better judgment, she let herself trust him, focusing instead on keeping pace as they weaved through the twisted maze of abandoned rides and stalls.
The sound of clanking metal grew louder behind them, the relentless screeches of the animatronics making Misa's heart race. Yuji's grip on her hand never wavered as they darted between crumbling rides and abandoned food stalls, the oppressive cursed energy pressing down on them like a storm cloud.
"This way!" Yuji shouted, yanking her toward a twisted mass of rusted tracks that loomed ahead.
Misa skidded to a stop, staring up at the entrance to the wildest-looking rollercoaster she had ever seen. The towering structure of faded steel spiraled into the sky, its loops and corkscrews now half-collapsed and covered in vines. The paint on the sign overhead was barely legible, but she could just make out the words: "THE NIGHTMARE SCREAMER."
"You've got to be kidding me," she muttered, her breath coming in quick gasps.
Yuji didn't let go of her hand, pulling her toward the entrance. "Come on! It's either this or those things!"
Misa glanced back, her stomach flipping as the bear animatronic rounded the corner, its glowing red eyes fixed on them. "Fine, but if we die, I'm haunting you."
"Deal," Yuji said, a grin somehow breaking through the panic.
The two scrambled onto the rollercoaster platform, their boots clanging against the metal. The cars sat in eerie stillness, their once-bright paint faded and chipped, the safety bars covered in patches of rust.
"It's not even running," Misa said, looking around frantically for an escape. "What's your plan now, genius?"
"Uh..." Yuji paused, glancing back as the animatronic closed the distance. "Improvising?"
Before she could argue, the bear lunged, its jagged metal claws reaching for Misa. Yuji reacted instantly, pulling her against him in one swift motion. She stumbled into his chest, his arm wrapped tightly around her as he pressed her back into the nearest coaster car. The animatronic's claws swiped inches from her face, sparks flying as they scraped against the metal frame of the car.
"Stay down!" Yuji shouted, his voice more commanding than she'd ever heard it.
Before the animatronic could strike again, the entire rollercoaster jolted to life. Lights flickered on along the tracks, dim and erratic, as the old machinery groaned and shuddered. A low, mechanical whine echoed through the air, followed by the unmistakable clank-clank-clank of the ride beginning to move.
"Oh, no," Misa muttered, her eyes wide. "Oh, no, no, noâ"
The car lurched forward, the animatronic's claw missing them by inches as it swayed unsteadily on the platform. The bear let out a guttural roar of frustration, but the coaster was already pulling them up the first hill, the chain lift rattling beneath them.
"This thing still works?!" Misa shouted, gripping the edges of the car as it ascended.
"I didn't think it would!" Yuji yelled back, frantically pulling the rusty safety bar down over their laps. It creaked ominously, the bolts barely holding together. "Hold onâthis thing looks like it's held together with duct tape and bad decisions!"
Misa shot him a glare. "You think?!"
The car climbed higher, the clanking of the chain lift nearly deafening. Below them, the animatronics gathered at the base of the track, their glowing eyes following the coaster as it rose. The bear swiped futilely at the supports, but the coaster was already out of its reach.
Misa's knuckles were white as she gripped the bar, her voice rising over the noise. "This is the dumbest idea you've ever had!"
"Not my fault the curse started the ride!" Yuji shouted, his face a mix of panic and exhilaration. "Just hang onâwe'll figure this out!"
The car reached the top of the hill, teetering for a moment as if deciding whether it was brave enough to continue. The cursed energy around them pulsed again, and the entire coaster shuddered.
"Oh, this is bad," Misa muttered, staring at the massive drop ahead of them.
Yuji braced himself, his grip firm on the safety bar as the car began to tip forward. "Hold on tight!"
The rollercoaster roared down the first drop, the rickety cars rattling violently as if threatening to fly off the tracks. Misa's stomach flipped, her fingers digging into the safety bar as they plummeted.
Next to her, Yuji let out an ear-piercing scream, the kind you'd expect from someone getting flung out of a plane rather than the strongest kid in Jujutsu Tech.
"Are you screaming?!" Misa yelled over the deafening wind, barely managing to turn her head to look at him.
Yuji's wide eyes were glued to the twisting track ahead. "It's a battle cry!"
"It's a scream!" Misa shouted back, a mix of panic and disbelief flashing across her face.
"I'm multitasking!" Yuji shot back, gripping the safety bar so tightly it looked like he might crush it.
The car flew into a sharp turn, tilting wildly as it threatened to throw them off the track entirely. Misa felt the pull of gravity yank her sideways, but Yuji braced himself and planted his feet firmly against the floor of the car.
"Hang on!" Yuji shouted, his voice barely audible over the wind. The entire car groaned under the strain, and one of the metal bolts holding the side panel together popped loose with an ominous ping.
"Oh, no, no, no!" Misa shouted, her eyes darting to the loose panel. "Yuji, this thing's falling apart!"
"Yeah, I noticed!" Yuji yelled, leaning out slightly and grabbing the edge of the panel. With a grunt of effort, he pushed it back into place, his cursed energy flaring to hold it steady.
"Did you just manually repair a rollercoaster?!" Misa's voice was a mix of awe and incredulity.
"Don't act like you're not impressed!" Yuji shot back, his face red from the effort.
Before she could reply, the cursed energy around them pulsed again, and the rollercoaster picked up speedâa lot of speed. The wind roared past them as they shot through another loop, the acceleration so intense that Misa's hair whipped around her face.
"This isn't normal!" Misa yelled, her voice barely audible over the howling wind.
"Really? You think?!" Yuji shouted, still holding the safety bar and part of the coaster's side together. His knuckles were turning white from the strain, but he refused to let go.
Realizing they weren't going to survive at this speed, Misa quickly gathered her cursed energy. She stretched out her hand, her Frost Dominion activating in a swirl of icy mist. Thin tracks of ice began to form along the rails ahead, the temperature plummeting as she poured more energy into slowing the ride.
The car groaned as the ice tracks started to take effect, the speed dropping slightly as the friction forced the wheels to grind against the frozen surface.
"Yes! It's working!" Misa shouted, her grin returning despite the chaos.
But her victory was short-lived. The cursed energy flared again, and the entire track began to shake. The rails ahead cracked, and the ice she'd created shattered like glass, sending sharp fragments flying into the air.
The coaster surged forward even faster, as if the curse itself was determined to turn the ride into their doom.
"Great! Now it's fighting back!" Misa yelled, trying to summon more ice. Her breathing grew heavier as the strain of maintaining her technique and keeping herself steady took its toll.
"I'm doing my best back here!" Yuji called out, grunting as he held the car together through another bone-rattling loop. "Why did I think this was a good idea?!"
"It wasn't!" Misa shouted back, though her voice cracked with suppressed laughter. As much as the situation was dire, there was something absurdly hilarious about Yuji screaming his lungs out while literally holding the rollercoaster together with brute strength.
The track ahead loomed with more sharp twists and loops, and Misa knew they couldn't keep this up much longer. The curse wasn't letting up, and the rollercoaster showed no signs of slowing down.
She gritted her teeth, summoning another wave of cursed energy as she extended her Frost Dominion farther along the track. Ice began to form again, thicker this time, but the cursed energy pushed back harder, cracking and melting the ice almost as quickly as she could create it.
"We can't keep this up!" Misa shouted, her voice strained. "This thing's going to shake itself apart!"
"Not if I can help it!" Yuji yelled, his cursed energy flaring brighter as he tightened his grip on the crumbling car. "Just keep slowing it down!"
The rollercoaster barreled forward, the fight between Misa's ice and the curse's relentless speed intensifying. The two of them braced for the next twist, their fates hanging by a thread as the ride hurtled into the unknown.
As the rollercoaster whipped through another sharp turn, the car jolted violently, nearly throwing Misa out of her seat. Yuji braced himself, gripping the safety bar with one hand and the crumbling side of the car with the other. The track ahead was still glowing faintly with cursed energy, the influence of the curse making every twist and loop feel more deadly than the last.
And then they heard itâa faint, distant shouting cutting through the chaos.
"ITADORI! UME! WHAT ARE YOU TWO DOING UP THERE?!"
Misa craned her neck to look down, spotting Nobara and Megumi standing on the ground below. Nobara was waving her hammer in the air, her voice rising in sheer exasperation.
"ARE YOU HAVING FUN, OR DID YOU JUST DECIDE TO TURN THIS INTO A DATE?!" she bellowed, her voice echoing through the park.
Misa let out an incredulous laugh, her breath catching as the rollercoaster tilted sharply into a corkscrew. "I CAN'T HEAR YOU! TOO BUSY TRYING NOT TO DIE!"
"THEN STOP SCREAMING AND FIX IT!" Megumi shouted, his arms crossed, clearly unimpressed by the entire ordeal.
"YOU THINK WE'RE NOT TRYING?!" Yuji yelled back, though the words came out more like a frantic gasp as the car sped into another loop. "THIS IS NOT OUR FAULT!"
"Oh, sure, blame the possessed rollercoaster!" Nobara shouted, stomping her foot. "JUST FIX IT BEFORE YOU GET US ALL KILLED!"
Misa snorted, despite the panic still bubbling in her chest. "They're really helpful, aren't they?"
"SO HELPFUL!" Yuji yelled, his voice cracking as the car rattled violently.
The animatronics below had stopped moving, their glowing red eyes now dim. Whatever spell the curse had over them seemed to have been broken, but the rollercoaster itself was still under its control, racing faster and more erratically with each passing second.
Misa gritted her teeth, her blue eyes narrowing as she summoned her cursed energy again. The icy mist of her Frost Dominion swirled around them, the temperature plummeting as she focused everything she had on overpowering the curse. She pressed her hands together, her breath visible in the freezing air.
"Alright, enough of this!" she growled, her voice sharp with determination.
Yuji glanced at her, his eyes widening slightly as the air around her seemed to pulse with raw energy. "Misaâ"
"Just hold on!" she shouted, cutting him off. She raised one hand, the frost spreading rapidly along the tracks ahead. This time, she wasn't just trying to slow the rideâshe was taking control. The cursed energy pushing back against her began to falter as her ice grew thicker, sharper, and more powerful.
The entire track groaned under the sudden cold, the cursed energy dissipating in waves as her Frost Dominion overwhelmed it. The glowing aura surrounding the coaster flickered and dimmed, the curse's hold weakening with each passing second.
With one final surge of energy, Misa slammed her hand down onto the safety bar, sending a shockwave of icy mist rippling outward. The cursed energy shattered like glass, breaking apart into harmless shards of light before dissolving into nothingness.
The rollercoaster hissed and groaned as it finally came to a stop near the entrance platform. For a long moment, neither Yuji nor Misa moved, the adrenaline still coursing through their veins. They sat there, panting, their hands still gripping the rusted safety bar as if the ride might suddenly spring to life again.
The silence stretched, broken only by the faint creak of the wind against the rickety tracks. Finally, Misa spoke, her voice low and slightly breathless, not bothering to look at Yuji.
"Did you seriously scream?"
Yuji didn't look at her either, his eyes fixed straight ahead as if carefully avoiding the question. "It was a battle cry."
The corner of Misa's mouth twitched, but she managed to keep her expression neutral. "Uh-huh. Sure."
They both fell silent again, their breathing starting to slow as the tension ebbed away. For a moment, it was like the world had paused, the madness of the amusement park fading into the background.
Then, as if on cue, their eyes met, and all composure broke.
"Your hair!" Misa burst out, pointing at him. Her laughter bubbled out uncontrollably, sharp and bright against the eerie quiet.
"What about my hair?!" Yuji shot back, his hand flying up to his head. His usually spiky pink hair was now sticking out in every direction, wild and frazzled, like he'd just been electrocuted.
"It'sâ" Misa doubled over, clutching her stomach. "It's like a puffball! Oh my God, you look like a dandelion!"
"Hey!" Yuji protested, though he couldn't stop the grin spreading across his face. "Your hair isn't any better!"
Misa blinked, momentarily startled, before reaching up to touch her own head. Her black hair, usually smooth and sleek, had been blown into an exaggerated mess, sticking out at odd angles like she'd just walked out of a wind tunnel.
"Oh no," she groaned, though she couldn't stop laughing. "I look like I just stepped out of a 90's blowout commercial."
"That's putting it lightly!" Yuji said, doubling over with laughter. "You look like a rockstar who lost their stylist halfway through the tour!"
"Excuse me, this is a bold fashion statement," Misa replied, still laughing as she gestured dramatically to her hair. "You, on the other hand, look like someone tried to vacuum your soul out of your head."
They both burst into another round of uncontrollable laughter, the tension and chaos of the rollercoaster ride finally giving way to the ridiculousness of the situation.
As Misa leaned back against the seat, still giggling, she caught movement out of the corner of her eye. She turned her head, her smile fading slightly when she realized what it was.
The bear animatronic, its massive, rusted frame still towering over the platform, had shifted closer during their conversation. Its cracked plastic face, with its glowing red eyes now dimmed but still unsettling, was practically in their faces.
"Uhâ" Misa jumped slightly, startled, which only caused her to shift closer to Yuji. The sudden movement brought her shoulder against his, her breath catching for a moment as the proximity registered.
Yuji glanced down at her, his grin fading slightly as his eyes flicked to the animatronic, then back to her. "You good?"
Misa blinked, her heartbeat still racing as she nodded. "Yeah. Just... wasn't expecting that thing to still be here."
Yuji chuckled softly, his voice calmer now. "Don't worry. It's just a pile of scrap now."
Misa glanced at him, then at the bear, before letting out a nervous laugh. "Right. Scrap. Totally fine."
But even as she said it, she didn't shift away from Yuji, the faint warmth of his presence oddly comforting after everything they'd just been through.
The two of them sat there for a moment longer, their laughter lingering in the air as the adrenaline continued to fade, the ridiculousness of it all settling over them like a strange, shared memory they'd never forget.
