âI said thereâs nothing to fuss about. Iâm just a little hurt.â
He frowned.
Yernia slowly approached Cassian and realized it wasnât normal.
Blood dripped from the inside of his uniform and it felt like she dropped her heart to the ground.
âCassian. Youâre bleedâââ
âItâs not a big deal.â
ââ¦â¦.â
âYou said you didnât want me to get hurt so I tried not to get hurt as much as possible. Unfortunately, it didnât work out as I wanted.â
Yernia couldnât speak.
The word âamputationâ that she heard from the doctor earlier still lingered in her ears.
She couldnât help but think that Cassianâs arm might need it.
âCutâââ
âWhat?â
âI might cut it.â
Cassianâs men helped him take off his uniform so that the doctor could see it better.
There was a long and deep laceration from his shoulder to his arm.
âLet me see your wound.â
As the doctor examined Cassian, Yernia felt someone hit her on the back as she stood there in a daze.
Yernia got pushed back and fell down with her hands on the floor.
She heard the nurseâs apology over her head.
âIâm sorry. Iâve been so busy that I didnât notice you. Are you all right?â
Yernia was the idle one in this busy situation.
She nodded.
In fact, she couldnât even hear her well.
A pair of boots came in front of her.
Cassian bent his knees and grabbed Yerniaâs shoulder to lift her up.
âCuttingâ¦â
She glanced up at the doctor.
The doctor coughed in bewilderment.
âWe donât have to cut it. This  minor injury doesnât even fit the requirements.â
âThatâs right,â Cassian replied casually.
âReally?â
Yernia was relieved.
âYes. Were you scared?â
âWhy wouldnât I? I thought you had to cut off your arm.â
Yernia couldnât bear to touch his injured arm, so she carefully brushed his other arm, instead.
âMy wound isnât that deep but you still have to treat it.â
âYou should ask the nurse. I only know how to bandage.â
Fortunately, the doctor said he would do it himself.
He treated Cassian with a sullen face.
Yernia took care of another soldier, wrapping a bandage around his forehead.
Annoyed, Cassian asked the doctor quietly. âWonât I need a bandage?â
âYou donât need to.â
âBut I need one.â
âItâs not that serious.â
âI need a bandage, doctor.â
âI see.â
The doctor called Yernia.
She hurried back to Cassian when she was asked to put a bandage on him.
âWhy did you get hurt?â She asked Cassian while wrapping a bandage around his arm.
âPeople get hurt on the battlefield even if Iâm careful.â
âThe Major is usually at the front line since a commander-in-chief shouldnât be at the scene to avoid getting hurt. Thatâs why a major like me had to be there.â
Next to them, Cassianâs men also tried to help.
There was a manâ-with hair in a rough cutâ-making a fuss over Cassianâs injury a while ago.
He was probably his subordinate.
âHeâs the best Esper in this Empire and heâs stronger than anyone else. I respect you, Major.â He said.
Yernia wanted to tell Cassian to stay behind the troops and not at the front lines but she held it in.
If Cassian fell back, someone else had to take over.
Still, she didnât like how Cassian had to put his neck out in the perils of death.
âWhen are you going to retire, major?â
He looked at Yernia for a moment before laughing at the unexpected question.
Other peopleâs laughter also filled the barracks.
âHave you had enough now that youâre thinking about my retirement?â
âIâm just curious. Youâre not going to retire after being like this for a long time like your father did, are you?â
Duke Vicil didnât retire even after his wife gave birth to a child after their marriage.
When his wife passed away, he left Cassian alone and spent a longer time on the battlefield than at home.
The Duke only retired after Cassian was old enough to get used to his fatherâs absence.
âI wouldnât do that to you. I donât want to make you suffer.â
âIâm glad you have a conscience,â Yernia said calmly.
She stopped herself from telling him she would rather get hurt than see him in pain.
When she realized that Cassian was finally safe, her anxious heart regained its normal beat.
Yernia wanted to ask why he was hurt and how long it had been since she told him she was upset about it.
She should hold it in.
âIâm going to get some fresh air.â
Yernia exited the barracks to persuade herself.
Cassian tried to wave at Yernia to get her attention but she was already out.
The subordinate, Â who was secretly watching Cassian, asked curiously.
âWhy are you doing this, Major?â
âWhat?â
âYou could have avoided it easily but you blocked it instead. I was surprised to see you sacrifice your arm when an Esper like you  only have to lift a fingerâââ
âYou saw it wrong. And you! You made such a fuss earlier that Yernia got surprised.â
âYou asked me to do it!â
