âDid you study nursing, My Lady?â
She didnât.
Yernia grew up in comfort and learned the least amount of knowledge.
âThat doesnât matter. I can apply bandages and disinfect wounds. Iâm pretty good at sewing, too.â
There was only one doctor and two nurses around here and they werenât enough to take care of a large number of people.
The nurses, who were about to faint from exhaustion, glowered at the prying man.
So did the doctor as he pushed the man aside and grabbed Yerniaâs hand.
âWelcome. I was waiting for someone like you to help.â
âHuh?â
âDisinfecting wounds and wrapping bandages. Thatâs all you need to do. Iâm grateful that youâre here.â
Yerniaâs eyes widened at his words of welcome.
âIâm glad to help, doctor.â
And, thatâs how Yernia looked after the injured.
It made her sick every time she had to sew their loose flesh together.
Embroidering on a handkerchief and sewing a personâs torn skin were too different.
She felt like going insane at the moment but she hid her weakness tactfully in order to help the people who needed her the most.
However, when the disinfectant was poured frantically into a soldierâs messy wound, a scream pierced her eardrums.
âGet some fresh air for a moment, My Lady.â
The doctor focused on treating his patients without any complaints, and sent out Yernia on the first night.
Unlike Yernia, he didnât cry nor was he scared.
The stars had popped out in the dark sky and it was already morning when she returned to the barracks.
Come to think of it.
She hadnât even eaten yet.
âWho told you to do this, Yernia?â
She made eye contact with Cassian as soon as he came out of the barracks.
The barracks for injured soldiers were close to the barracks where Cassian attended meetings.
âHow did you know that?â
âI always keep tabs on wherever you go. But what is this all of a sudden? It surprised me that you want to leave the barracks while I attend meetings.â
Yernia was also surprised to realize the dangers on this battlefield.
âI did it because I wanted to help. I also didnât want to be alone in the barracks. Didnât you come out of the meeting just now because you were so busy?â
Usually, Cassian wouldnât look for her until nightfall, but he didnât even search her whereabouts around that time, so she thought he was too occupied.
Yernia wasnât disappointed at all.
She was just relieved.
If Yernia kept waiting for him to return to the barracks, she would have to deal with boredom and that was too difficult.
âYou donât have to do this, Yernia.â
âI want to. I can handle it so donât worry about me. Other people have been so kindâââ
âI donât want other peopleâs blood on your hands.â
Cassian took out a handkerchief and wiped her hands.
She wiped them before leaving the barracks but the blood didnât disappear completely.
âI still want to do it.â
âYes, Iâm giving in.â Cassian sighed, grimacing. âYou said you wanted to do it, so you should.â
âAre you upset?â
âIâm not that narrow-minded. I was just worried.â
When Cassian looked around, he let out a deflating laugh before going to the barracks.
The surroundings felt nauseous and he didnât seem to like it, but he still supported her decision.
However, Cassian only returned to this place, wounded, the next day.
***
âMy Lady! Please disinfect this place!â
Yernia hurried to the sound calling her.
The men who went to battle today were all injured.
Although the injuries didnât seem life-threatening, the soldiers still have them in different magnitudes.
Despite the endless influx of wounded soldiers, Yernia tried to push back her concern over Cassian at the back of her mind.
When she poured disinfectant into a wound, it bubbled up.
âThe wound isnât that deep, so I donât have to amputate it. You got lucky today. If it went in a little more, I have no choice but to do it.â
The doctor said gravely after examining the wound.
Yernia was surprised at the manâs luck because he wouldnât need an amputation.
Come to think of it.
She was told about such injuries.
Yernia was aware of the possibility but it seemed more dangerous than she thought.
âIt was starkly different from knowing vague information about it in your head and experiencing it directly with your body.â
Yernia became worried about Cassian even more.
Someone pushed the barracksâ curtains aside and shouted urgently, Â âThereâs another wounded man. Itâs Major Ricardo!â
Yernia, who had her back facing the entrance since she was busy bandaging a wounded soldier, Â flinched.
Her husband was injured.
âArenât you going to him, My Lady?â
Her mind blanked for a moment.
The injured soldier, who became stiff due to the bandages, brought Yernia back to reality.
Yerniaâs hands moved urgently but they kept on slipping so she had to ask a nurse nearby  to finish it for her.
The instant she turned around, she saw Cassian enter with his head lowered under the barracksâ curtains.
He looked alright.
