"Come on babe, just admit it. I'm not gonna judge you," Faith told Chris as they along with hundreds of others exited the packed theater, having just finished Endgame. "We just witnessed the end of an era, it's okay if you cried."
"I was not crying!" He insisted with a light chuckle. "I said before there was dust in my eyes, that's all. Nothing to see here."
"That's the oldest excuse in the book," Faith laughed, shaking her head. "But hey, if you say so I'll take your word for it."
As they made their way back out to the red carpet media area, Faith knew that Chris's co-stars would be anxious to talk with him, not to mention he had about ten media interviews waiting for him alongside press row. But the good part of it was that those she'd met so far within the Marvel family had welcomed her into the fold as one of their own, if for no reason other than they were happy that Chris was happy.
A reporter called out Chris's name and beckoned him over, to which he responded with a thumbs up. "Duty calls," he said after kissing her cheek. "I'll catch up with you later, okay?"
Faith nodded, deciding to head to find something to drink and maybe mingle a little while waiting for Chris. Lisa spotted her from across the way and waved. Faith thought it was sweet that he'd also invited his family to come to the premiere, but it'd been the first time she had seen Carly since she'd admitted to being the leaker. It would be awkward to say the least.
Faith wasn't the type to hold a grudge, but she also felt there was no legitimate reason to forgive Carly for what she'd done, especially when it'd put both she and Chris at risk. She'd only gotten a small glimpse thus far, but the media was ruthless and rarely cared who they hurt. If Carly had continued feeding them information, God only knew what could've happened as a result.
Still, it wasn't all bad. Faith knew how to be cordial even in unpleasant circumstances. Their mother's behavior aside, Ethan, Stella and Miles were the absolute cutest kidsâand they'd started calling her "auntie Faith" as of late, which felt even more familial. Like she and Chris had already tied the knot.
"Hey there sweetie," Lisa greeted her with a bright smile, pulling her in for a quick hug. "Did you enjoy the movie?"
"It was amazing! Chris was crying at the end, but he didn't want to admit it."
Scott laughed boisterously. "Sis, he never does! Not even when we watched Lion King as kids."
Just as Faith started to reply, she felt a smaller hang tug on her own. She turned to see Stella looking up at her almost expectantly. "Auntie Faith, can you come with me? I want to take a picture with Iron Man."
Out of nowhere, Carly stepped in, nearly bowling Faith over with a not-so-subtle shoulder bump. "Mommy can take you, sweetie. I'm sure Faith has other things she'd rather be doing right now."
"Actually, no. I've got this," Faith flashed Carly a thin smile, wanting no parts of whatever game she was trying to play, instead redirecting her attention completely to Stella. "Of course I'll come with you! Let's go."
Stella took Faith's hand, and they hurriedly weaved their way through the crowd, until eventually they came upon a group of about three to five people in a circle talking amongst themselves. Sure enough, there stood RDJ alongside his wife, and a couple other people Faith didn't recognize. She wanted to wait until they were finished talking, but Stella's excitement got the better of her and she tapped the elbow of the person nearest to them. "Excuse me, I'd like to take a picture with Iron Man."
Susan laughed and got Robert's attention. When he saw Stella, his eyes lit up. "Oh my goodness! I know you! I remember when you were way down here," He lowered his hand in the air to just below his knee for emphasis, causing Faith to chuckle quietly. "Did you like the movie?"
"Uh-huh," Stella said with a shy smile. "May I get a picture with you?"
"You certainly can, sweetheart." Faith got out her phone and waited as Robert bent down to Stella's height, then snapped a few. Once they'd finished, Robert stood and locked eyes with her. "And who's this other pretty lady?"
Faith parted her lips to speak, but Stella was quicker. "This is my auntie Faith!"
It was one of those moments where you didn't have time to offer a correction. Awkward, sure, but Faith was quick on her feet if anything. She extended a hand for Robert to shake, only for him to wave her off. "None of that, anyone who makes Evans as happy as you do definitely deserves a hug."
She obliged him with a laugh. "It's so nice to meet you! Congrats on the movie, it was incredible."
"I so appreciate you saying that," He pulled away from the embrace, lightly patting her shoulder. "So, you and Chris tied the knot already? How come I wasn't invited to the ceremony?"
"Oh, we're not there yet," She replied, pushing some hair behind her ear. "Believe me, when it comes, you'll be one of the first to know."
"Ah, I see. When Stella said...well, you know, I just assumed."
"No worries, it happens." Faith remarked with a light shrug.
"You know, when we were on set doing reshoots a few months back, he couldn't stop talking about you," Robert continued with a knowing grin. "That kid is absolutely crazy about you. So, I'm going to go ahead and expect those invites sooner rather than later, Mrs. Evans."
Long after they'd left the Downeys, marriage was in the back of Faith's mind for the second time already today. She briefly wondered if maybe it was too soon. Chris hadn't been dropping any hints, after all. But then again, maybe there was some merit in entertaining the idea. What was the saying? When you know, you know?
Across the way, Faith spotted Chris wrapping up yet another interview on press row. When he caught her eye, he gave her a wink and an easygoing smile. She returned the latter of the two gestures, the butterflies in her stomach working overtime. He still had that effect on her, much like when they first became friends.
Faith knew that she wasn't going to get tired of seeing that grin anytime soonâso maybe it wasn't too soon to be thinking about wedding bells after all.
