Chapter 44
Filthy Rich Husband
MAGGIE
Logan seems shocked by what Iâve just told him. I guess he didnât expect me to get pregnant so soon, but it was inevitable with the way weâve been going at each other these past few months.
He seems speechless as I stare at him. âAre you not happy?â
âHappy is not the word Iâd use for what Iâm feeling right now, Maggie.â His hand squeezes my waist. âItâs beyond description.â
He caresses my stomach with his hand. âWhen did you find out?â
âThis morning.â I circle my arms around his neck and pull him toward me for a kiss.
He kisses me back with the same passion. His tongue moves deliciously in my mouth, and when he pulls away, I instantly feel the loss.
âDid you tell Chase?â
âNot yet. Thought Iâll tell you first, but Iâm sure heâs going to be excited about getting a sibling. Heâs always wanted one, and I had no means to give him what he wanted.â
âWell, now you do,â he places feather-light kisses all over my neck and my jaw. âIn fact, he can have more than one sibling if he wants.â
I give him a mischievous smile. âIâll be more than happy to give you more children, Mr. Malory.â
Logan laughs. âYou make me sound like a caveman.â
âIâm so excited. If Iâm having a boy again, then heâs going to look like a miniature version of you.â
âOr how about a little princess that looks like you? I would love that. Boys are troublemakers. I want a girl, Maggie.â
âHmmm, youâre right. Donât think I have a lot of energy for another boy running around the house plotting disasters.â
He pats my head. âI canât wait to tell Dad about it. Heâll be more excited than the two of us put together.â
I giggle as I imagine the senior Maloryâs reaction to the news. âLetâs tell him together.â
When John learns of the news, heâs over the moon. He acts as if Logan and I have invented a device that could prove that the ships disappearing into the Bermuda Triangle are in fact sailing into another dimension.
We let the old man celebrate in his own way. Heâs so excited that he declares all the staff are going to get a bonus this month, which cheers them up, and the maids look at me like Iâm a god-sent miracle.
When I tell Chase the news, heâs ecstatic. He wants to go shopping for new toys for his brother.
âShe could be a sister too, Chase. Think about it,â Logan tells him.
âSisters are cool, but I want a brother,â he says and then looks at me, âPlease, Mommy, pleaseâ¦â
âSweetie, I really canât answer that for you. Itâs going to be a surprise.â
âLike a birthday surprise?â he asks innocently.
I give him a nod.
In the days that follow, Logan gets into a routine of making me lazier than I already am. He doesnât want me to lift a finger and, to be honest, heâs being a little exasperating.
Iâm not even allowed to climb the stairs or tie my shoelaces. Iâm being showered with so much love, I donât think Iâve ever been this happy.
And then itâs time for me to face the inevitable, which is to meet Carter.
***
I need Logan for moral support, but Iâm afraid itâs going to get awkward with Carter, since Chase is here with me.
I wonât know how to handle it if Logan gets pissed off by something that Carter says so I convince Logan to let me meet Carter alone with Chase.
âAre you sure, Maggie?â he asks me as Iâm about to exit the car. âCan you really do this alone?â
âIâm sure.â I give him a small smile. âDonât worry about me.â
He pushes the loose hair away from my face.
âNo matter what he tells youâ¦â Thereâs genuine fear in his gaze. âJust know I love you more than anything in this world. And I donât feel this way just because youâre carrying my child.â
My heart warms with his words. I turn my face and kiss his palm. âI know, Logan. I love you more.â
âI love you morest, Mommy,â Chase says from the backseat.
â~Morest~ is not a word, sweetie.â I have to laugh because he looks so serious.
Logan squeezes my hand. âJust call me if you need me.â
âOf course.â
âIâm meeting Paris and some clients, so I wonât be far.â
Even though I told Logan that I would drive, he insisted on driving me himself.
As I enter the fast-food joint, the scent of grease enters my nostrils. Iâm not very sensitive to scents, which is a good thing.
I would have preferred meeting somewhere else, but Carter had asked Chase where he wanted to meet, so this was his idea.
Carter is on his feet when he sees me. Chase squeezes my hand as we walk to his table.
Chase acted completely differently when he thought Carter was just a friend, and as soon as he found out that he was his biological father, things changed.
âHey buddy, whatâs up?â Carter asked Chase as we took our seats.
Chase stares at Carter for a long time before answering. âIâmâ¦Iâm fine.â
Carter offers a gift bag to Chase. âThis is for you.â
Usually, Chase would have snatched it out of Carterâs hands, but this time he stares at me hesitantly.
I smile at him. âSay thank you.â
âThank you,â Chase says.
I can see from Carterâs expression that this is not the reunion that he expected.
When we get our food, itâs like the silence prolongs at our table. This is worse than I imagined. I imagine what my reaction would be like if Logan wasnât in my life, if I hadnât married him.
Would I allow Carter back into my life? I wasnât so sure, but maybe I would have done it as a favor for Chase.
âSoâ¦Chase, did your mommy tell you about me?â
Chase nods his head. âShe told me youâre my real daddy.â
Carter gives him a smile. âThatâs right.â
âWhy didnât you visit us before?â Chase asks him outright.
Carter is speechless. Of course, he doesnât have an answer. How could you meet a son you didnât know existed until a few weeks ago?
âIâ¦Iâ¦wellâ
I must admit, itâs fun to watch him squirm.
âI was overseas, and I couldnât travel due to my work.â
What a lousy excuse.
âBut Iâm here nowâ¦â He gives him the charming smile again. âDo you want to come live with me on the weekends?â
âCarterâ¦you havenât discussed with me yet,â I interject.
Carterâs smile doesnât slip as he addresses Chase. âBuddy, can you give me a moment with your mom?â
Chase steals one nugget and runs off toward the kidsâ play area. As soon as Chase is gone, Carterâs demeanor changes.
âWhat?â he asks. âI canât even invite my son over to stay with me now?â
â~My~ son,â I correct him. âAnd if you really want to take him over the weekend, you need my permission.â
He sighs. âI have apologized to you a thousand times. I didnât mean for any of this to happen, Maggie. Please believe me.â
Carter sounds truly sorry for everything that heâs done, but he needs to know thereâs no going back. He canât have me back in his life.
âI believe you, Carter, but thereâs nothing I can do.â
âI still love you,â he confesses.
âYouâre a manipulative liar, you always have been, and youâre saying all this now because you canât control me anymore.â
He stares straight at me, and there was a time in my life when I swooned over his good looks. Now, I canât stand to look at him.
âBaby, listenâ¦â
âDonât call me that.â
âMags, look at me.â His voice cracks, he sounds frustrated. Iâve never heard him so out of control. âI would do anything to have you and Chase back in my life. Just fucking anything. Let me fix this.â
âHow are you going to fix anything?â
He looks unhinged now, and heâs hellbent on whatever heâs planning. âLogan will find another wife. He doesnât need you. Iâ¦I need you.â
âI canât believe you just said that.â
And then when I think he canât do anything worse, he feels around in his pocket for something and shows it to me.
Itâs a diamond ring, and I know whatâs about to follow. Iâm about to open my mouth, when I see Logan walking into the restaurant.
Things are going to get so messy.
