Chapter 15
Filthy Rich Husband
MAGGIE
~FIVE YEARS AGO~
âWhat kind of party is it?â Logan asks me in his stern, bossy tone.
I roll my eyes. âThe usual type.â
âDefine âusual.â If itâs going to have drinks, drugs, and sex, I canât allow you to go to this, Maggie.â
âIâm not doing any of that,â I promised.
âWhen your dad comes back from his trip, you can go to the party. Right now, youâre my responsibility, and youâre not going to any parties on my watch.â
Iâm wearing a really cute dress and even did my makeup. Now Logan wanted to control my life even though he hasnât been around for a long time.
Iâve always gone to these parties, and I know how to look out for myself. It just proves how much of a child he thinks I am, even though Iâm an adult now.
âWhat do you want me to do?â I asked. âAll my friends are going to be there!â
He shrugs. âNot my problem.â
âBut Iâm already eighteen. You know you canât stop me, right? My dad doesnât.â
He laughs. âWhy do I get the feeling like you keep throwing the âIâm eighteenâ card at me to get things your way?â
Just then, the doorbell rings. He gives me a suspicious look. âWho is that?â
Logan opens the door and quickly steps back. Itâs my classmate, Amelia, the one who invited me to the party.
Amelia is one of the girls in school who hangs out with the popular crowd. The partyâs at Dawsonâs place, whoâs a QB and her boyfriend.
All the guys who play sports are Dawsonâs friends, and I feel so lucky that Iâm part of that crowd. If you want to get through high school, it doesnât hurt to stick with the popular gang. Makes things easier.
She pushes past Logan, and her eyes light up when she sees me on the stairs. âOh gosh, Maggie, you look so sexxxyyyy⦠I bet all the boys in the party wonât be able to tear their eyes away from you.â
~Ha. Logan, did you hear that?~
Of course, Logan doesnât pay attention. Heâs busy texting someone on his phone.
âMy babysitter says I canât go,â I complain to her.
âWhy the hell not?!â Amelia turns to Logan.
He gives her a bored look. âBecause I donât trust these parties. I know exactly what goes on there.â
âBut we wonât do any of the things you think weâll be doing, right, Maggie?â
I nod. âPlease, Logan. I owe you for this. All my classmates are going to be there. Itâs my only chance to make more friends. Please.â
He sighs because my pout is his weakness, or so I think. âFine, but Iâll pick you up by ten.â
âTen?!â I yell at him. âThe party starts at nine!â
âYou want to go to this party or not? This is my house, remember? My house, my rules. Ten p.m. sharp. Take it or leave it.â
Before I can get a word out of my mouth, Amelia jumps in. âTen is totally fine!â
âAnd I want your number,â he tells my friend, âand the person whose house youâre going to. Send me the location as well.â
My heart warms up every time he acts so caring about me, like my dad blindly trusts me and wouldnât bother asking me all these details, but Logan is different.
âOkay, Iâm going to start the car. We have to go right now!â Amelia whispers to me before she bulldozes out of the door.
When sheâs out, I pick up my purse and start to walk out of the door when Logan calls out to me.
âBe careful, okay?â he says. âAnd donât accept drinks from boys, especially boys. You never know whatâs in there.â He looks concerned, and that makes me giddy.
âI wonât,â I say.
âYou have to promise me,â he says.
âI promise.â
âAnd donât go alone to any room with any guy that says he wants to show you something.â
Heat rises to my cheeks. I nod.
He pats my cheek. âGo have fun. Iâll be there to pick you up by ten. If thereâs anything you need me for, just call or text.â
âThanks.â
When I get into the car with Amelia, Loganâs still at the doorstep. I wave goodbye.
***
The partyâs in full swing. I guess when Adrian sent out that Facebook status about having a party at his place, every kid in town turned up. There were even kids from the rival school.
I wonder who invited them. It wouldnât be a surprise if Dawson was the one who did it. Heâs a bit of a show-off, but other than that heâs a decent guy. Much better than some of the other jocks at school I know.
âHey Maggie, you look hot.â Thatâs Tim. Heâs a goalie on the soccer team, and he recently broke up with Nat, his girlfriend of six months. Since the breakup, heâs been trying his best to get another girl.
Iâm probably his current target.
âThanks.â I smile. I mean, heâs cute and all, but he doesnât get me excited.
âYou want punch?â he offers me a red solo cup.
I look at it with terror. âUhâ¦No, Iâm good.â
He laughs. âItâs just fruit punch. Relax. We havenât mixed anything funny in it.â
âNo, I donât like fruity stuff.â
He pulls out a chilled can of beer. âHere.â
Since the beer can is not opened, I accept it. âThanks.â
âOoooh, looks like you like the hard stuffâ¦hahaâ¦kidding.â
âMaggieeeeeâ¦,â Dawson drawls and goes in for a hug. Heâs drunk. âIâm so glad you came.â
âHappy to be here.â
He gives me a polite smile. âTim, take care of my friend here, okay? Donât let her out of your sight, and if you try to touch her, Iâll punch you.â
Tim laughs. âCool, man. Any friend of Ameliaâs is mine, too.â
âGreattttâ¦â He kisses Amelia sloppily on her cheek. âBabe, you promised.â
She wiggles out of his arms, giggling, âOkay, letâs go.â
Since itâs difficult to listen to anything, Amelia leans in to scream into my ear, âIâm going upstairs with Dawson. He says he bought a new PlayStation console. Are you going to be okay by yourself for a while?â
âOf course.â I smile at her.
When she follows him happily upstairs, Tim says, âThey are so totally going to bang in there.â
I laugh nervously. âFor sure.â
She promised she would not leave me alone for even a minute, and now sheâs off to have a fuck-fest with her boyfriend, leaving me with heart-eyes Tim.
Just freakinâ great!
âWant to go to the gaming room?â
I donât have anyone else to keep me company, so going with Tim is the only other option I had.
In the gaming room, I watch the other kids play. There are all sorts of games here. Ping-pong, video games, pool, and even those race-car arcade games. Thereâs a drinking competition taking place on the other side of the table.
Tim tries his best to engage me in a conversation, but heâs just too boring, and is hoping to hook up with someone for tonight. Iâm not in the mood to become his conquest, even to kill time.
I eat some chips out of boredom and then go to the pool deck. Thankfully, Tim finds someone else to entertain, which is a relief.
I sit down in the corner, minding my own business, scrolling through my phone, because I donât want to make eye contact with someone I donât want to talk to when I feel someone sitting beside me.
I hadnât even noticed him there until a few seconds ago.
He grins at me. âYouâre not enjoying the party?â
âMy friend bailed on me,â I admit.
âTell me about it.â He laughs. âWell, my friend did the same thing, so I guess weâre in the same boat.â
âSucks for you,â I smile back. âYou donât go to our school. Iâm sure I would have noticed you.â
âYouâre right. Iâm from Springfield High. Itâs just thirty minutes away from here, not that far.â
âI see, so⦠I take it youâre friends with someone here?â
He nods. âActually, I lived in Canada with my father for a while, but my parents divorced last year, so I moved here with my mother. Dawson and I are good friends.
âOur schools played against each other last year. Iâm a QB too.â
âReally? I know most of his friends, and Iâve never seen you.â
âWell, now you have.â He raises his hand for a shake. âLet me formally introduce myself. Iâm Carter. Whatâs your name?â
I shake his hand. âMaggie.â
Carter is the best-looking guy here at this party, and heâs the only one so far who has grabbed my attention. With shaggy brown hair and green eyes, heâs a total babe.
Since he plays sports, his arms are big and muscular too. I have no doubt that he has a girlfriend, because a guy like Carter couldnât go to the bathroom without some girl trying to cling to him.
âItâs nice to meet you, Maggie.â He gives me a friendly smile. âWant to go for a swim in the pool?â
âOh no, I didnât bring my swimsuit. Itâs okay, you go on ahead.â
He looks at the crowd inside the pool. âNah. I think Iâm good here. At least Iâve got a new friend now who I can chat with.â
âSo, weâre friends now?â I ask him.
âWhy not? I mean, we have something in common.â
âWhich is?â
âThe fact that we both hate parties.â He winks, and that makes me laugh.
âYouâre right.â
My phone buzzes in my pocket. I pull it out to see itâs a call from Logan. The time is a quarter to nine. I press my hand to my other ear to listen to what he has to say. âHey.â
âMags, just wanted to check. Whatâs up?â
âUm, nothingâ¦just chilling here. Not getting into trouble,â I say.
âGood. Is Amelia with you?â
âUhâ¦yeah, sheâs in the kitchen,â I lie.
Thereâs a pause like heâs unsure what to say next, then he says, âOkay, have fun.â
When he hangs up, Carter gives me a knowing smile. âBoyfriend?â
I wave my hand. âOh no. Heâs family.â
âListen, Maggieââ
âExcuse me!â Amelia came stomping toward me. âYou were sitting here all along, and Iâve been looking everywhere for you, missy.â
âHey, you were the one who bailed on your friend and sneaked off with your boyfriend. Not Maggieâs fault,â Carter says quickly.
He and Dawson do that fist-bump thing that boys usually do.
âExactly what Carter said.â
Amelia groaned. âOkay, fine! Iâm the worst friend ever.â She narrowed her eyes at us. âOn the bright side, I see that the two of you have already met.â
Dawson slaps Carter on the back. âThanks for keeping her company.â
âIt was no problem.â
âCan I get you something to drink, Maggie?â Carter asks me.
Before I can answer, Dawson says, âMaggie only drinks from cups that are handed out by me or my better half.â
âAw, am I really your better half, baby?â Amelia pouts.
âI thought you already knew.â
Ugh. They are so cute together. It makes me gag.
âSo, what do I need to do to climb that âtrustâ ladder?â
âJust hang out with us,â Dawson says. âTell you what, weâre going to the movies next weekend, Carter. You should join.â
He laughs. âCan I? I mean I would love to, if you girls donât mind.â
âWe wonât. It would be kind of a double date,â Amelia looks at me with wide eyes.
âCool,â Carter says, and then his attention shifts to me. âListen, Maggie, is it okay if we exchange our numbers?â
âOf course,â I say, pulling out my phone.
Itâs weird because my heartâs pounding against my chest, which has never happened before, other than when Iâm with Logan.
Amelia pulls me into the kitchen, and she squeaks and hugs me. âWhat the hell was that about?â
âWhat?â
âYou and Carter?!â
âI just got a new friend,â I tell her.
âIt looked like heâs interested in being more than friends,â she says, âI mean this is Carter Cruz.
âHeâs the god of football around here. You seriously will climb the popularity ladder to queen status if you date him. Girls at our school are dying to just talk to him, and he asked for your number!â
Right on cue, we see two girls lingering close to Carter. The friend nudges her, and then she speaks to him. Carter says something to them politely and then excuses himself.
âItâs nothing like that, Amy. Come on.â
âYouâre totally blushing.â She hugs me tight. âAnyhow, it looks like heâs interested in you. It wouldnât hurt to just hang out with him, right? Heâll be good for you.â
I nod. âYeah, I guess.â
We have pizza for dinner, and I canât help but notice that Carter finds excuses to spend more time with me. At exactly ten, I get a text from Logan like a control freak that he is.
Logan
Iâm outside.
âGuys, I have to go.â
âYouâre leaving? So soon?â Thatâs Carter.
âYeah, Iâm sorry. I have a curfew.â
âOkay, let me walk you outside at least.â
Carter walks me outside, and I notice Loganâs Mercedes parked outside the driveway. Loganâs smiling until he sees the guy behind me.
