Chapter 56

Chapter : 53 - Unexpected Stops

Uns Ki Mohabbat : Heartstrings

"Are you coming to my room? Should I tell for tea?" Samir asked as we entered the house.

"I'll come later. For now, I'm going to see Ammi and Abbu. Send the tea there," I told Samir, making my way toward Abbu's room.

I knocked on the door and as I entered. Abbu was lying down with his eyes closed, resting his head on Ammi's lap while Ammi was gently massaging his head.

"Ammi, you left me," I expressed my mock annoyance, though my real intention was to tease Abbu.

"Khalid, wake up now," Ammi said sternly to Abbu, and after a moment, he finally opened his eyes.

"You're my enemy, Aziz" Abbu taunted with frustration as he stood up and sat on the edge of the bed. I struggled to hold back my laughter as I walked over to Ammi, laying my head on her lap. She began massaging my hair gently.

"You dropped Uns off properly, right, Aziz?" Ammi asked, but her question sounded more like a subtle taunt.

"Yes, Ammi, I dropped her off safe and sound," I replied with patience.

"Zaina, this is unfair. I'm your husband. How can you stop massaging my head and start massaging Aziz's?" Abbu complained with exaggerated frustration.

"Ofcourse, you're my husband, but Aziz is my son," Ammi replied confidently.

"Shame on you, Aziz, causing fights between us," Abbu started scolding me in anger.

"Ammi, look how jealous your husband is!" I teased Abbu further, barely holding in my laughter.

"By the way, Khalid, you look cute even when you're angry," Ammi teased Abbu this time.

Abbu was at a loss for words, or perhaps it was more accurate to say he was flustered by Ammi's comment.

"Zaina!" Abbu tried to sound stern, but a faint smile spread across his face despite his best efforts.

"Yes, Khalid?" Ammi asked with a playful smile.

"Nothing. Aziz, when are you leaving?" Abbu asked me in a serious tone.

"I'll leave after having tea, Abbu," I replied with an innocent smile.

Abbu gave me a stern look, but I had no intention of leaving so soon. Until the tea arrived, I laid down with my eyes closed on Ammi's lap, and naturally, when I closed my eyes, all I could think of was my wife. I was lost in thoughts of her when Abbu's voice broke through my reverie.

"Aziz, your tea is here!" Abbu called out loudly.

I opened my eyes, picked up my cup of tea, and headed for the door.

"Happy now?" I teased Abbu as I prepared to leave.

"Very much," Abbu replied, clearly satisfied. Just then, Ammi playfully tapped his shoulder.

Abbu gave Ammi an innocent smile, and with tea in hand, I made my way to Samir's room. When I walked in, Samir was lying half-reclined on the bed, holding a cup of tea, looking utterly depressed. In front of him, Tamir sat on the couch, singing sad songs with a bright smile on his face.

Ignoring both of them, I laid down on Samir's bed in the same position, listening to Tamir's melancholy singing and sipping my tea.

"What happened?" I began the conversation.

"What hasn't happened? Even though I have everything, I still feel incomplete," Samir replied.

"At least drink your tea," I suggested.

"What good will tea do, Aziz? My life has lost all its color," he spoke like a helpless lover, and as if that wasn't enough, Tamir kept singing sorrowful songs with every word Samir uttered, strumming his guitar to match the mood perfectly.

"Is it over or you still have to say?" I asked Samir, tired of his useless words.

"Everything is over, Aziz," Samir replied with utter sadness.

"Giving up won't solve anything. Pray Tahajjud, Samir. Where fate gives up, Tahajjud takes over." I reassured him.

"Seven years of Tahajjud didn't reach Allah, so you think it will reach now, Aziz?" Samir complained.

"He's watching to see how much patience you can have, Samir," I said with a smile.

"I have no hope left, Aziz!" He started talking in a hopeless manner.

"Allah only tests the ones He loves, Samir. Your job is just to keep praying," I tried to reassure him.

"Then you pray for me, Aziz, because Allah listens to your prayers," Samir said seriously, looking at me.

"I will, but you also need to pray with full faith," I ended the conversation and placed my cup of tea on the table.

And since I didn't feel like going to my room without Uns, all three brothers put on Samir's clothes and slept in his room.

___❤___

When I woke up, I saw Samir and Tamir putting on the prayer mats. I checked the time, and it was 3:30 AM. Before standing for the Tahajjud prayer, Samir looked at me.

"Should I lay one out for you too?" Samir asked.

"Yes, please," I replied and got up to perform ablution. When I returned, they both were waiting for me.

I stood in the middle, with Samir on my right and Tamir on my left. After praying two rakats of Nafl and turning to my right to complete the salam, I noticed Samir's tears falling onto his prayer mat. When I turned for the second Salam, I saw that Tamir's eyes were also wet.

Aur jab maine dua ke liye haath uthai toh wahi chehra, wahi aurat, wahi dua yaad aayi. Aur phir meri aankhon seh aansuo ke selab aane laga.

Mai apni biwi ki zindagi ke liye mere allah seh dua maangta raha tha toh yeh dono mere allah seh apni mohabbat ko rote hue maang rahe the.

(And when I raised my hands for dua, that same face, that same woman, and the same prayer came to mind. Then a flood of tears streamed down my face.

While I was praying to Allah for my wife's well-being, these two were silently crying and praying for their loved ones)

"Oh my Allah, You've given us everything, blessed us with countless blessings. But today, I have one request: keep my Uns safe and grant Samir with Sahara. Don't test him any further; You and I both know what he's been through for that woman.

My Allah, don't let his efforts go unrewarded. If Samir has done any good deed, then in exchange, please grant him, his Sahara. And bless my brother Tamir with Ezzeh if she is the right woman for him.

Yaah Allah, give me the strength to give Uns every happiness she deserves. Please protect my Uns.

Ameen. I said and finished my prayer.

After wiping my tears and standing up, I noticed that Samir and Tamir were still in prostration. Samir started sobbing loudly, while Tamir silently hid his tears.

After the Salam, both of them stood up, and without saying anything, Samir walked out to the balcony. Tamir and I didn't want to disturb him, so we went downstairs to wait for him in the living room, so that when he came back, we could go to the mosque for Fajr prayer.

After Fajr, the three of us headed to the gym. I was doing push-ups when I heard Samir's old dramatic voice in my ears.

"Oh Allah, Aziz, wear a shirt while working out!" He said in a dramatic tone.

"Don't you have any other work, Samir?" I said sternly.

"Work? Who can eve work if they see you looking like this, Aziz? Now, go put on a shirt!" He ordered. This guy is shameless from birth. I thought seeing his dramatic talks.

"You're talking about me, Samir? What about you? Who is always busy showing off those veiny arms to everyone, what's that about?" I shot back at him.

"Not everyone, just you, Tamir, and..." He stopped in mid way.

"And who else?" Now I was curious.

"And Sahara," he said, trying to avoid my gaze. Is he blushing right now?

"Sahara?" I teased.

"One day she told me about her type, and in another conversation, she mentioned that she loves veiny hands.

Toh, Sahara, ki har khwaish, Samir, ke liye hukum hai!" Samir finally opened up about his feelings.

(So, Sahara's every wish is Samir's command).

"So much love?" I teased him even more.

Instead of answering, he just smiled and joined me in doing push-ups. Seeing the two of us, Tamir, who was doing pull-ups, joined us in doing push-ups too. After the gym, when I returned to the room, her scent was everywhere.

On the bed, the dressing table, the wardrobe-everything reminded me of her.

"I miss you so much, Sweetheart," I said aloud.

I went to the shower, and when I came out wearing a bathrobe, I opened the wardrobe to grab some clothes, only to realize I had opened her side of it. Grabbing something for myself, I changed and went to the dressing table to do my hair. And even there was Uns's claw clip, and some of her shades were on the table.

As I combed my hair, I opened the lower shelf to grab my perfume, but it wasn't there.

I used it yesterday itself, where did Uns put it? Then when I opened another shelf to get my wallet, all I found were her clips, pins, and hairbands.

Feeling a bit confused, I picked up my phone. She is probably sleeping, and I didn't want to disturb her, but how could I start my day without hearing her voice? So, I called my sweetheart, and she picked up in two seconds.

"Assalamualaikum, sweetheart," I said with a smile.

"Waalaikum assalam, Shahjahan," her voice was so fresh, as if she was happy.

"Did you get any sleep?" I asked.

"No, Sahara and Ezzeh didn't let me sleep, and you? Did you sleep well, Nader?" Her voice was soft and caring. There was no anger or complaint in her tone.

"I tried to sleep, and I even closed my eyes, but all I could see was your face, Sweetheart" I said, smiling as I kept the phone on speaker and searched looking for handkerchief.

"Nader!" she said sternly, and I chuckled.

"Are you heading to the office?" Uns asked.

"Yes," I replied.

"Begum, have you made any changes to the room?" I thought it was best to bring up the topic casually.

"Yes, why? You don't like it--

"I love it," I quickly said before she could finish or get upset.

"It's just... I can't seem to find my wallet, perfume, watch, handkerchief, tie, and... and... oh, my car keys," I said, trying to sound as neutral as possible, so she wouldn't think I was complaining or taunting her.

"Go to the wardrobe, open the second drawer, your handkerchief and tie will be there. Use the grey handkerchief, Nader," she gave me instructions so clearly that when I checked, everything was there.

"Now go to the dressing table, open the third drawer, and you'll find the perfume, and in the fourth, your watches," she said again, and I found the rest of my things.

"Go to the nightstand, open the first drawer, and your wallet will be there. As for your car keys, you usually leave them on the table above, check there, they'll be there," as she said all this, I couldn't help but feel impressed.

How does she notice everything about me so perfectly?

"I wasn't sleeping here yesterday, so the keys must have gone missing, sweetheart," I nervously said, knowing she might scold me now.

"Where did you sleep, then?" Her soft voice suddenly became stern.

"Uh... Samir's room," I stuttered.

"Oh, okay," there was some relief in her voice.

"Check Samir's nightstand; they'll be there," she said.

"Okay, begum, I'll check," I said, walking out of the room.

"Have you had breakfast, sweetheart?" I asked.

"I was asleep, Nader, I'll have it later," Uns replied.

"Alright, make sure to eat," I said as I walked towards the dining table.

"And you, make sure you have a heavy breakfast, Nader" she commanded from the other side.

"As you say," I said with a smile.

"Call me when you leave and when you arrive, okay?" she started giving me one instruction after another.

"Begum, you haven't slept all night, you must be tired. Please rest, and don't worry about me," I said as I sat down and took a sip of my tea.

"You'll call or not?" she asked directly.

"Of course, I will," I replied.

"Okay, enjoy your breakfast," her voice softened a bit.

"Yes, I will," I said and hung up the phone. When I looked up, Ammi, Abbu, Rasha, Tamir, and Samir were all staring at me.

Ammi, Abbu, and Rasha looked shocked, while Tamir and Samir had mischievous smiles on their faces.

"You shameless people," I said to those two and began eating my breakfast.

"Zaina, give Aziz a heavy breakfast," Abbu said to Ammi.

"Yes, of course, Khalid! After all, his begum have instructed him to have a heavy breakfast, so he has to eat a lot," this time, Ammi had a mischievous smile on her face.

When I looked at the three useless people, they were all trying to hold back their laughter, and I couldn't figure out what was going on.

"Aziz..." Samir called out, laughing.

"The phone was on speaker!" he said, and everyone burst out laughing, while I turned red with embarrassment.

Why? Why didn't I turn it off? Shameless! I cursed myself and stood up.

"Sit down, or I'll call your wife," Samir threatened.

And just hearing "wife," I sat back down and quietly finished my breakfast, grabbed the keys from Samir's room, and while heading out, I called Uns.

"I'm going to the office, sweetheart," I said, opening the car door.

"Take care," she replied.

"Allah Hafiz," she said so quickly from the other side.

"Khuda Hafiz," I replied, feeling flustered.

And turned the car and headed to the office.

It was 8:30 pm when I entered the kitchen. Ammi was preparing food with a few helpers. When I went and stood beside her.

"What do you need?" Ammi asked, as if she had read my mind.

"Not much, just wanted to ask if you know how to make almond halwa?" I asked nervously.

"Yes, but why are you blushing, Uns? Does Aziz like it?" Ammi asked mischievously while adding kababs to the biryani.

"No, it's nothing like that, Ammi. I was just asking," I tried to change the subject.

"Just admit it, Uns, that you want to learn how to make almond halwa," Ammi said directly.

"Uh, no... Ammi-"

"Does Aziz like it or not?" Ammi cut me off, asking a question that made me blush even more.

"Yes," I said, lowering my gaze.

"Then just say so. Take the almonds from the shelf and the container from the drawer," Ammi instructed, and I followed her directions.

"But Aziz isn't here, so?" Ammi asked while putting some almonds in a bowl of warm water.

"I'll make it when I go home," I said, peeling the soaked almonds.

"Okay, and if you need any other recipe, just call me or ask Zaina, she'll help," Ammi said, peeling the almonds too.

"By the way, she's really nice, Ammi," I couldn't help but add.

"She's not just nice, Uns, she's very nice," Ammi replied.

"Do you know, Uns, Zaina and Khalid Bhai came here a month before you arrived in India, to ask for your hand for Aziz. Hassan and I were already prepared and had even thought about calling you back home earlier. But then Khalid Bhai said that Aziz had gone for Hajj, and it would take him a month to return. Until then, we would let you know so you could manage your schedule and return to India." Ammi's words stopped me in my tracks.

"Aziz has performed Hajj?" I blurted out.

"You didn't know?" Ammi asked, instead of answering.

"He never told me," I said, still in disbelief that Aziz had performed Hajj.

So much has changed him, how? What could have changed Aziz Nader? The Aziz I left behind didn't even know the meaning of Allah, and this Aziz, who is now my husband, seeing him no one could ever say he was once an nonbeliever.

What are you, Aziz? What changed your heart, Aziz Nader? And what kind of man are you, you performed Hajj and didn't even care to tell me? How do I express my joy for such a blessing?

Ek haaji ki biwi hoon mai, ek mukammal mard ki biwi hoon, joh mujhe mukammal karta hai.

(I'm the wife of a Haaji, the wife of a complete man who completes me)

"Uns, grind these almonds now." Ammi's voice snapped me out of my thoughts, and as I looked at the almonds, they reminded me of him even more.

He loves almond halwa so much, and I just wanted to learn how to make it for his happiness. But now, I want to learn everything he loves, so I can thank him in this way.

I was happy, but now I felt like making the halwa and immediately praying two rakats of gratitude-gratitude for his safety, his health, and his success.

Then, after half an hour, when I went to my room, I saw two missed calls from Rasha.

A wave of worry washed over me, and in that anxiousness, I called Rasha back.

"Assalam walikum, Bhabhi, were you busy?" Rasha asked after greeting me.

"Walaikum Assalam, the phone was in the room, Rasha. Why? Is everything okay?" I asked, feeling uneasy.

"Nothing, Bhabhi, it's just that no one is here with me, so I was thinking, if you allow, can I come over to your place?" Rasha asked with both comfort and hesitation.

"Is that even something to ask? Of course, come over, Rasha. Have dinner here as well. Should I send the car?" I asked with a smile.

"No, Bhabhi, I'll come with Tamir Bhai," Rasha said happily, though I was hoping she'd come with Aziz.

"Alright, I'll be waiting," I said before hanging up and heading to perform wuzu.

At 9:30 PM, I got home completely exhausted and saw Rasha standing at the entrance. Just by looking at her, I knew she needed something from me. But I was so tired that all I wanted to do was go to my room, call Uns, and do nothing else tonight.

"Bhai, can you drop me off somewhere?" Rasha asked, making it her first question after greeting me.

"Look, kid, I'm really tired. Those two useless CEOs sitting there, ask them," I said, pointing at Samir and Tamir, who were lounging on the couch in loose tracks and T-shirts, legs crossed, and using their phones.

"Are you sure you won't drop me off, Bhai?" Rasha asked, giving me a pointed look.

"Yes, I am sure," I said bluntly and started heading upstairs.

"Tamir Bhai, will you drop me off at Uns Bhabhi's house?" My steps halted, and I turned back to Rasha, with puzzled look.

"At Uns's place?" I asked, thinking I might have misheard her.

"Tamir Bhai, will you drop me?" Rasha ignored me and asked Tamir. He immediately stood up, and Samir followed.

"Rasha, I'll drop you, okay? Don't worry," I tried to convince her.

"But Bhai, aren't you tired?" she teased, throwing a taunt.

"Not anymore," I replied directly.

"Aziz, go to bed. Tamir and I will drop Rasha," Samir said playfully.

"Bhai, you and Samir should go rest. I'll drop Rasha," Tamir said, speaking up for the first time.

"Rasha!" I just looked at her.

"Aziz Bhai will drop me," Rasha declared.

"This isn't fair, Aziz," I don't want to listen to Samir today.

"Rasha," I looked at her again, expressionless.

"Bhai, are we going?" Rasha asked, ignoring both of them, making me proud of her.

"Fine, I'm coming with you too," Samir said firmly.

"Count me in," Tamir chimed in from behind.

"Why are you doing this, Samir Bhai? Why do three people need to come just to drop off one?" Rasha said in frustration, but both of them ignored her and started walking toward their rooms.

"Where are you going?" I shouted.

"To freshen up," they both replied in unison and went inside. I also went to my room, freshened up, and came downstairs to see Rasha standing at the entrance.

I took her bag, put it in the trunk, and opened the passenger seat for her to sit. Rasha sat, and then I got in and called for the two to hurry up. In seconds, both came and sat in the back, and I started the car.

"Why are you going there?" I asked her.

"I'm impressed by your timing, Bhai. Now you're asking?" Rasha taunted.

"Your telling me?" I asked, laughing as I drove.

"You three men won't include me in anything, so I'm going to Bhabhi's house. At least there, I'll have someone to talk to," Rasha said excitedly.

"Alright, alright," I said and continued driving until a shop caught my attention, and I stopped.

"What happened?" Samir shouted from the back.

"Nothing, just wait a few minutes," I said and got out of the car.

After two minutes, I came back with a bag and started driving again.

"What's that?" Samir asked.

"Sweets," I said and handed the bag to Rasha to hold.

"What's the occasion, Aziz?" Samir teased.

"I'm going to my in-laws' house. Can't go empty-handed, can I?" I replied and kept driving.

After about five minutes, another shop caught my attention, and I stopped the car again.

"Now what, Aziz?" Samir's frustrated voice came from the back.

"Just a minute, I'll be right back," I said and got out again.

A few minutes later, I returned with another bag.

"What's this now?" Samir asked, sounding fed up.

"Walnuts for Uns," I said calmly and was about to drive when Samir's shout stopped me.

"What happened?" I asked, annoyed.

"I need to buy something too," he said and stepped out. After two minutes, he came back with a bag.

"What did you buy?" Tamir asked him.

"Chocolates for Sahara," Samir said with a smile and sat back down.

"Bhai," this time, I heard Tamir's soft voice.

"Yes, Tamir?" I replied calmly.

"I want to buy something too," he said nervously.

"Sure, we'll wait," I replied, only to see Samir giving me death glares through the rearview mirror.

After two or three minutes, Tamir returned with two bags.

"What did you buy?" All three of us asked excitedly, eager to see what this shy boy had bought for his beloved.

"I also bought chocolates," he said, keeping one bag for himself and handing the other to Rasha.

"What's this?" Rasha asked, confused.

"Chocolates for you too," Tamir said, and we all melted a little.

"Thank you, Bhai," Rasha smiled and took the bag.

"Rasha, this is for you," Samir said from behind, handing her a box of chocolates.

"You bought some too, Bhai?" Rasha was overwhelmed.

"And Rasha, here you go," I said, handing her another box of walnuts.

"Why?" she asked, a little emotional.

"If I don't forget to buy something for my wife, how can I forget my sister?" I said, placing my hand on her head.

"Thank you so much, Bhai," she said, almost on the verge of tears.

"Are we good to go now?" I asked everyone.

"Yes!" all three of them shouted, and I started driving at full speed, only to stop again when a flower shop caught my attention.

"Are we going to make it today, Aziz?" Samir didn't miss a chance to taunt me.

"It's my car, Samir. One more word, and you're out," I said, getting out to buy a bouquet for my sweetheart and her mom.

I placed it in the trunk and, without wasting a minute, drove straight to Reza Mansion.

The gate opened, and as I drove inside, I saw Uns coming out. She was wearing a white dress, just looking like my moon, and walking toward us.

I got out of the car and started walking toward her.

"Assalam Walikum, sweetheart," I said.

"Walaikum Assalam, Nader," Uns replied.

Just seeing her made all my exhaustion disappear.

"Coffee, pine chalogi?" I asked, hoping to spend some time with her.

(Will you join me for coffee?)

"Chai piyoge, mere haath ki?" she asked, and I found myself blushing.

(Will you have tea? Made by me?)

"If you're making it, I'll definitely have it-"

"Bhabhi, we're here too!" Two voices shouted from behind.

Frustrated, I turned around only to get a shock. I hadn't noticed when they both changed their clothes. At home, they looked like poor souls, but now they were standing in formal suits, as if they had just came from the office.

"Oh, please come in," Uns said with a smile, welcoming us all.

I took the bouquets from the trunk and grabbed the bags as both of the betrayers left me and hurried inside when Uns called them.

"What's all this, Nader?" Uns asked, walking toward me.

"Nothing special, sweetheart," I said, handing her the bouquet and then the box of walnuts.

"Thank you," Uns said with a smile.

"I can do anything to see this smile," I said, kissing her forehead and walking inside with her.

Amira Aunty was talking to Samir when she noticed me.

"Mashallah, my son has come!" Aunty said happily as she walked toward me. I greeted her and handed her the bouquet and the box of sweets.

"What was the need for all this, Aziz?" Aunty asked kindly as she accepted them.

"It was necessary, Aunty," I said with a smile and sat on the couch.

In front of me were Tamir and Samir, sitting a little distance from each other, while Rasha had gone straight upstairs.

And there I sat, waiting for the tea my wife was going to make.

"Is someone making tea,Sahara?" I was deeply focused on straining the tea when I heard Ezzeh's playful voice from behind. Without turning around, I continued watching the tea boil.

"Someone is so busy, they forgot about us within seconds," Ezzeh said as she came closer.

"Are you done?" I asked, glancing at both of them briefly.

"Bhai is here, that's fine, it's his right, but why are your brother-in-law's here as well, Appi?" Sahara asked, frustrated.

"Why don't you go ask Samir why he's here?" I teased Sahara.

"You too, Appi?" Sahara asked in surprise.

"Not at all," I replied with a smile.

"Ezzeh, serve this to Aziz," I said, pouring tea into a cup.

"You're saying it like Aziz would actually take it from me, Uns" Ezzeh laughed.

"He is not that dramatic, Ezzeh. Aziz will take it, just go," I said while pouring tea into other cups.

"Wanna bet he won't take it, Uns?" Ezzeh said confidently.

"Alright," I replied.

"1000-" she started.

"500!" I cut her off.

"Aziz ki reputation ka hein khayal rakh lo, Uns!" Ezzeh mockingly whispered at me.

(At least consider Aziz's reputation, Uns).

"400," I ignored her words and lowered the amount.

"700!" she countered.

"500," I said.

"Deal! If Jiju takes it, you win, and I'll give you 500 on the spot. But if Jiju doesn't take it, you'll ask him, and give us, agree?" Ezzeh asked playfully.

"Agree," I said, and handed her the tray with only Aziz's tea on it.

Ezzeh called me and kept her phone on speaker. While holding it in her one hand and the tray in the other, walking towards Aziz while Sahara and I peeked from the kitchen, watching them closely.

"Jiju, here's your tea," Ezzeh offered the tea to Aziz.

"Ahh... Tamir is over there, Ezzeh, don't bother yourself. Uns will bring it for me," Aziz's reply left me both confused and frustrated.

Confused as to what does it even have to do with Tamir, and frustrated because I had lost the bet.

Without pressing him or asking again, Ezzeh moved on and served the tea to Tamir. I picked up the cups of tea for Aziz and me and started walking when Sahara's voice stopped me.

"And Samir's tea?" Sahara asked.

"It's ready, go and give it to him" I said with a smile and walked towards Aziz before Sahara could say anything else.

I signaled to Samir with my eyes to leave, and understanding my gesture, he quietly got up and went outside. I shot a stern look at Aziz and placed the tray on the table with a loud thud. He was surprised, but I was frustrated.

"If I'm not there, will you still not take tea from anyone else, Nader?" I asked while handing him his tea.

"If you're not there, it's obvious I wouldn't be there either, Sweetheart" he answered directly, taking a sip of the tea.
