Chapter : 48 - Whispers and Winks
Uns Ki Mohabbat : Heartstrings
For Hindi / Urdu Readers.
For English Readers.
Last weekend was incredibly beautiful for me because I was with my wife.
Now, as I was changing my clothes after taking a shower, my eyes fell on Uns's claw clip lying in the corner of the shelf. Seeing that clutch brought a slight smile to my face.
And why wouldn't it? I suppose I'll have to get used to such things now. Who knows how many of my wife's things I'll find scattered around?
After changing my clothes, I took her clutch in my hand and walked out. Only to find her standing by the mirror, drying her wet hair with a towel. And I don't know what happens to this foolish heart of mine, which started getting jealous of that towel.
I slowly walked over to her and stood by her side, taking in the fragrance of her hair. Uns glanced at me for a moment and then continued drying her hair.
"Khush naseebi hai yeh tauliye ki, jise aapke baalon ko chune ki gustaakhi bhi maaf hai" I said while looking at her.
(Lucky towel, getting away with the audacity of touching your hair).
"It's just a non-living thing, Nader," Uns said with a laugh.
"So what, Begam? The towel can touch you, but I can't?" I asked, feigning annoyance the towel now.
"When did I ever stop you from touching my hair, Nader?" Uns asked in the same teasing tone, leaving me at a loss for words.
What a woman she is! It took her just seconds to silence me.
"Aren't you making me a bit too weak, sweetheart?" I asked, taking the towel from her and gently drying her hair.
"Not at all. If you get flustered just by looking at me, how is that my fault, Nader? That's a problem with your shameless heart and cheeks, which blush whenever they see me," she said in a teasing manner. And there it was, my cheeks really started turning red.
"Look, how easily your cheeks turn red," Uns teased again.
"Stop it, Uns," I instantly said, and turned her towards me.
"What should I stop, Nader?" she asked innocently.
"Whatever you're doing right now," I said, brushing a few strands of her hair behind her ear.
"What am I doing, Aziz?" Uns launched another attack.
"You're making my heart weak," I said, placing my hands on her cheeks.
"And how is that my fault?" she asked quietly, though her cheeks were now turning red.
Perhaps because my hands were on them. And within seconds, her entire face had turned as red as a tomato. Seeing her like this, I couldn't help but smile and took a step towards her.
"Aziz? What are you doing?" Uns stuttered.
"Getting close to my wife," I said in a deep voice.
"I am getting late for shopping," Uns said, taking a step back.
"Dont worry, I'll drop you off," I said, taking another step closer.
"You must be getting late for the office too," Uns made another excuse.
"Let it be, I'm the CEO; I can go anytime," I said, getting even closer.
"You're shameless," she said.
And I couldn't help but laugh at her another statement, thinking about how unromantic my wife is. Instead of blushing, she's calling me shameless here.
"Your right, Uns. I am extremely shameless, but only for you," I said deeply, getting even closer.
"Wait a minute, Aziz, let me catch my breath first. You're already so huge; if I stop breathing, how will you do anything?" Uns scolded me.
"Astagfirullah, Uns, don't say that. I'm stepping back," I said, and then I took exactly 0.001 inches back.
"You call that stepping back, Aziz?" Uns asked sternly.
"Yes," I replied with a smile.
"Are you done?" she asked, lowering her gaze.
"I haven't even started yet, Sweetheart" I whispered as I leaned in closer to her face and lifted her chin up.
Exactly one minute later, I kissed her forehead and stepped back.
"This was just a trailer, Begam" I teased, then reached my drawer to pick up my wallet.
"Bhegairat Insaan," I heard her mutter.
When I turned to look at her, her face was flushed, and she was glaring at me as if she could kill me anytime with her eyes.
I just winked at her in response to her intense gaze.
After grabbing my wallet, I went back to the mirror to comb my hair when my gaze fell on the clutch I had placed on the table.
"Your clutch, sweetheart," I said, handing it to her.
"Where did you find it, Aziz? I searched the whole washroom but couldn't see it," Uns asked while taking the clutch.
"It was in the washroom shelf," I said with a proud face.
"Oh, thank you," she scrunched her nose with a smile.
I mean, seriously, Uns? A smile was fine-I was getting used to it-but now what's this new thing? How can you always look this cute to me, Begam!! I screamed internally.
"So you're dropping me?" Uns asked while tying her hair into a messy bun.
"Yes, but where should I drop you?" I asked while combing my hair and beard.
"I don't remember the name, but Samir sent me the address. Drop me here," Uns said as she walked towards our bed, taking her phone and showing me the address.
I looked at the address, then at Uns.
"Didn't Samir tell you about this place, Begam?" I asked her, glancing at the address again that Samir had sent.
"No, he didn't," came Uns's soft reply.
"Okay, fine. I'll drop you after breakfast," I said, and then we both went downstairs for breakfast.
After breakfast, Begum started heading back towards the room, and I followed her. She began searching for her purse after putting on her abaya, opened the cupboard to take out some boxes, and even took a moment to straighten the pillows on the couch.
"Why didn't you put all this things earlier?" I asked as I walked in.
"I just remembered them," Uns replied while searching something from the wardrobe.
"Can I help you with something, Begum?" I asked, offering my assistance.
"Yes, Aziz, please put my phone and power bank in my purse," Uns said, placing three or four boxes beside her purse on the bed.
"What's this?" I asked, after putting her phone and power bank away, noticing the boxes.
"Just put the white and red ones inside," she ordered, instead of answering.
"What's in them?" I asked her calmly.
"I bought some shades for Ezzeh and Sahara," Uns replied, putting the boxes away herself.
"And what about the other two?" I asked, being curious for no reason.
"These are for Rasha and me," Uns said as she placed the remaining two boxes inside the wardrobe.
I mean, I was stunned by her choices. She bought the same thing for all four of them.
"After begum got ready, when we came out of the house, I saw Samir walking towards us.
Judging by his condition, it looked like he just came from doing some mechanic work-wearing a loose grey t-shirt that looked more brown than grey, and black tracks covered in dust, and holding screwdriver in one hand and a water bottle in other.
"Is this a side business, or did someone rob you, Samir?" That's all I could say when I saw him.
"Aziz!" Uns said, lightly hitting my biceps.
"Look at his condition, Uns," I said, looking at Samir.
"I'm not in the mood to argue with you today, Aziz, so it would be better if you kept quiet," Samir said with a smile. But today, there was something different about his happiness, a strange calmness shining on his face. I was lost in my thoughts while these two started whispering some secret to each other again.
But this time, without interrupting, I silently stood there, listening to their conversation.
"I'll call her, Samir, then you'll have to handle it," Uns whispered.
"Yes, Bhabhi, I'll handle it from there," Samir replied.
"But I'm worried-what if she tries to hit me again?" Samir said with fear.
"She's not that dangerous, Samir" Uns reassured him.
"Who could be more dangerous than you, Uns?" slipped out of my mouth suddenly.
At this statement, both of them looked at me-Samir's gaze was fine, but Uns? She wasn't just staring; she was glaring at me. I took a deep breath to assure myself that she wouldn't do anything to me-I am her husband after all.
"I'll see you in the evening," she whispered through gritted teeth near my ear, and I felt like tonight I might have to sleep on the couch. I thought to myself.
"Ah, shameless Aziz, control your tongue," my heart scolded me.
"You didn't say anything wrong either, Aziz," my mind assured me.
"Fine then, sleep on the couch," my heart taunted.
"Fine! I'll apologize to her," I said to both, while looking at her.
"Let's go, sweetheart," I said, holding her hand as I led her towards my car.
I opened the door for her, and once Uns sat comfortably in the seat, I closed the door and walked over to Samir, who was still standing near the entrance.
"What's cooking between you and your bhabhi?" I whispered in his ear.
"None of your business!" Samir whispered back, a mischievous smirk playing on his lips.
"None of my business, huh? Seriously, Samir? Remember, you'll have to come to me eventually. This 'none of your business' will cost you dearly," I said with a calm smile and started walking back towards the car.
"This is blackmail, Aziz," Samir said, and I turned to look at him.
"Yes, it is, Mr. Farsi," I said, and then opened the car door. Giving him one last look, I started driving towards the mall.
"Are you going alone for the shopping, sweetheart?" I started the conversation while driving.
"No, Ezzeh is already waiting for me," Uns replied dryly.
I glanced over at her and saw that she was looking out the window.
"What did I do now?" I wondered to myself.
Gathering all my courage, I started the conversation again.
"Uns?" I called out gently.
"What?" Her voice was sharp.
"Nothing, begam," I sighed deeply.
What should I do now? And what did I do? and why is she upset right now?
Mall was 30 minutes away, but every minute felt longer as my mind raced with worry.
"What did I do?" I kept thinking as I continued to drive slowly.
Exactly 45 minutes later, I stopped the car in front of the mall. Before she could angrily open the car door herself, I quickly stepped out, opened the door for her, and stood waiting for her to come out.
Begam took her time, taking almost two minutes to get out of the car.
"Shall we go in?" I asked softly, noticing her still being upset with me.
"One minute, Aziz, let me call Ezzeh," Uns said as she took her phone out of her bag.
While she was busy talking to Ezzeh, I was busy looking at the most beautiful view.
There was anger, annoyance, and frustration on Begam's face, but in her eyes? Only love. After talking with Ezzeh, Uns looked at me.
"Ezzeh is waiting inside," Uns said gently.
"Then let's go inside," I said, holding her hand.
"Aren't you getting late for the office?" Uns tried to shake off my hand.
"I'll drop you with Ezzeh and then head to the office," I said, tightening my grip on her hand.
"I'm not a little girl, Aziz. I can go alone," Uns said firmly.
"I know l, but you're my wife. How can I leave you alone and go?" I said as we walked.
"You can flirt, but you can't do what really needs to be done, can you?" Uns said, walking quickly. I was confused thinking what had I done that I couldn't remember?
"What do you mean?" I asked, puzzled.
"Nothing," Uns said, and we arrived at Samir's store.
When we reached, Ezzeh was standing outside, looking at the store's name. Uns, too stopped at her tracks looking at Samir's brand name.
"Finally, you're here, Uns!" Ezzeh said as she turned around, speaking with great ease, and embracing Uns tightly.
She gets shy to embrace me, but can embrace Ezzeh so casually? I thought to myself, watching them-I mean, looking them and feeling jealous for no reason.
"Assalam walikum, jiju," Ezzeh said, breaking the embrace with Uns and giving me a slight smile.
"Walaikum assalam, Ezzeh," I responded to her greeting with the same smile.
"If you're done smiling, will you go to the office now, Aziz?" Uns said, giving me a sharp look.
So, Begam gets jealous too? That made me happy, and I didn't even realize when that happiness showed on my face.
"Aren't you smiling so much, Aziz?" Uns remarked sarcastically.
"I'm not," I defended myself.
"Then go," Uns said.
"Should I go?" I asked.
"Go quickly," Uns replied.
But I just stood there, looking for an excuse to spend more time with her.
"Take care," I managed to say with great courage.
"Yes, I will," she replied.
With a slight smile, I turned to leave, but it felt like my feet weren't ready to go. Taking small steps, I started towards the lift, but of course, the damn lift had to break down now only, it was good when we came up!
Then I noticed the door to the stairs. I opened it, intending to go down, but before I could take a step further, I sensed her fragrance, I turned around without thinking.
And There she is-Uns, standing right behind me.
"You're here?" I asked, feeling a strange happiness just by seeing her.
"You didn't say a proper goodbye to me, Aziz," Uns said as she started walking down the stairs with me.
"But you told me to leave, Begam," I said, holding her hand.
"So you would just leave?" she asked, as she stopped stepping down.
"Aapka har hukum sar aankhon par hai, Begam. Kaise mana karta tumhari baat ko?" I said, turning towards her.
(Your every order is like a command to me, Begam. How could I refuse)
"You tease alot, Aziz," Uns said with a smile.
"Thank God, you're smiling," I said, looking at her, and it was surprising how my own mood had lifted just by her smile.
"Shauhar hoon tumhara mai, pura haqh hai mera, tumhe chedne," I added proudly.
(And I'm your husband. I have the right to tease you).
"Shahjahan, I know you're my husband. Why do you keep saying it over and over?" Uns asked casually.
"I have to say it, Uns, because you hesitate to come close to me," I explained her my condition, and before I could do anything else, Uns kissed me just below my right cheek.
"Do you really think that, I hesitate to touch you, Aziz?" Uns asked as she kissed my left cheek.
And I stood there like a statue, unable to speak or feel anything, I felt as if all my organs had stopped working for now.
"Why do you want to kill me so soon, Begam?" I asked, placing her hand over my heart.
Don't ever tell this type of things again, Nader," Uns said, lightly hitting my chest.
"Then don't give me such attacks," I immediately replied.
"If I come close to you, it's a problem, and if I don't, it's also a problem. What should I do, Aziz?" Uns asked, almost yelling in frustration.
"No, it's not like that. I just get shy-"
"I dare you to complete that sentence, Aziz. You're not so innocent that you'd get shy," Uns said, taunting me.
But how could I tell her that, yes, Begam, I really do get shy whenever you do such things to me?
"Should I escort you downstairs, or are you going to leave from here?" Uns asked with another smile.
"I'll leave from here, but before that tell me, where is Sahara, Begam?" I asked, noticing Sahara's absence. After all, sweetheart had told me yesterday that she would be going shopping with Ezzeh and Sahara.
"Sahara?" Uns stuttered.
"What are you hiding from me, sweetheart?" I asked, lifting her chin.
"Nothing," Uns said with a smile, but this time her smile didn't melt me.
"Tell me quickly," I insisted, brushing my hand against her cheek.
"Sahara will come with Samir," Uns said, avoiding my gaze.
"With Samir?" I asked in surprise.
"Don't ask anything more, Aziz," Uns replied.
"Alright, I won't ask anything else, just do what you did five minutes ago, and I'll leave quietly with asking anymore questions," I said calmy.
"Do you even have a sense of shame, Aziz?" Uns asked, placing both her hands on her waist.
"No, I don't have such thing in me, when I am with you," I said with a slight laugh.
"Hurry up, I'm getting late for the office," I said, glancing at my watch.
"How can I do it, Shahjahan? Have you seen your height? Even if I jump a little, I can only reach your beard. And your beard is very rough, Aziz," Uns said.
"What kind of injustice is this, Begam? What's wrong with my beard now?" I was defended.
"It's not a problem with the beard; it's just rough," Uns said as she touched my beard.
"Will you do it now or not?" I asked impatiently.
"Should I do it on your rough beard?" Uns asked sternly.
"I'll bend down then," I said, and I leaned forward in front of her.
"I am waiting, sweetheart," I said shyly.
"Someone might see, Aziz," Uns said, covering her face with her hand.
"No one will see, Begam," I assured her.
Finally, she kissed my right cheek and then my left cheek. After feeling her touch, I was about to straighten up, but Uns stopped me by placing her hand on my shoulder. Then, she lifted herself slightly and kissed my both eyes.
I literally need a therapist right now, I thought to myself.
"Happy?" Uns asked as she stood straigt.
"Extremely happy," I said with a smile.
"Now it's my turn," Uns said.
"What?" I asked.
Instead of answering, Uns pointed to her forehead with her hand. I bent down, kissed her forehead, and embraced her gently.
"I'll come to take you," I said, giving her one more kiss on the forehead.
"Come quickly," Uns said, hiding herself in my chest.
"Allah hafiz," Uns said with a smile.
"Khuda hafiz," I replied and began to descend.
After Aziz left, I started walking towards Ezzeh. I was upset in the morning because of Shahjahan; if he didn't want to do anything, why did he come so close to me? Then I thought, maybe he needs time, or he's shy, or maybe he's giving me time.
Then I considered that if Shahjahan even have any sense of shame, but then I thought, why should only he act this way? I can do it too. If he can conquer the world for me, why can't I fulfill one of his wishes?
After thinking about all this, I realized it's also my duty to do something for him, after all, he is my husband! While I was lost in these thoughts, I didn't even notice when I reached Ezzeh.
"How much are you going to blush, Uns? Have some mercy on those cheeks," I heard Ezzeh's voice.
When I looked up, I met Ezzeh's stern gaze.
"Sorry for keeping you waiting, Ezzeh. Let's go," I apologized.
But Ezzeh didn't seem in the mood to go.
"Maybe I heard wrong, you said 10 minutes, and I heard 1 minute, right Uns?" Ezzeh started complaining, and I was preparing myself to listen to her grievances.
"How long does it take to say goodbye? And who takes 10 minutes to say two words?" she fumed in anger.
"No, tell me, Uns. I've been waiting here for the last 30 minutes," Ezzeh said.
"Aziz was driving slowly," I cut her off.
"Why will he not drive slowly, Uns? He's your husband, woman. He would literally do all this to spend time with you. But, you should have told him to come later," She showed her annoyance
"And it wasn't enough that you left me here too and got busy with your romance in those stairs?" Ezzeh asked, her tone was even stern now.
"I only went to say goodbye," I explained.
"What kind of goodbye takes 10 minutes to say?" Ezzeh asked.
"Okay, fine, let's go now, it's getting late," I said, ignoring her taunts.
"So where should we start now?" Ezzeh asked while looking at Samir's store.
"Let's start with the men's section," I said, also looking at the store.
"Men's section?" Ezzeh asked, puzzled.
"First, let's shop for Aziz," I clarified her confusion.
"He will buy it himself," Ezzeh said with narrowed eyes.
"No, Ezzeh, he won't buy anything for himself, instead he'll just wear some of his boring suit," I said as we entered the store.
"Won't we be short on time?" Ezzeh asked with another question.
"There isn't much to get for Aziz-just a suit, shoes, a belt, a tie, perfume, and a few handkerchiefs," I said as we headed towards the men's section.
"Wow!" Ezzeh exclaimed.
"And when is Madam Sahara coming here?" Ezzeh asked, glancing at the suits.
"No idea, just pray that Samir convinces her to come," I said while carefully inspecting the suits.
"Still, it's surprising, Uns, that the brand we gossip about so much actually belongs to Samir," Ezzeh said in amazement.
"Exactly, Ezzeh. I never imagined in my wildest dreams that someone could do all this for love," I said, glancing at the name of Samir's brand.
"Don't you think Samir has changed a lot?" Ezzeh asked.
"He's changed a lot, actually. He speaks with manners now, and even dresses decently," I said while looking at ties for Aziz.
"Of course, he'll have to dresses well, Uns. He's a fashion designer and, more than that, a CEO," Ezzeh said with a smile.
"Yeah, you're right," I said, smiling back.
"Will you have some, coffee?" Ezzeh asked.
"Sure, let's buy Aziz's clothes and then we can go," I replied.
"You pick out clothes for your husband, and I'll get coffee for both of us," Ezzeh said with a smile, but it felt more like a taunt to me.
"Perfect then, just add a little extra sugar," I said as she headed towards the door.
"I know," she replied, closing the door behind her.
And then I went back to selecting a nice suit for Shahjahan.
