Chapter 74
The Luna’s Choice by Kat Silver
Chapter 74: Theo I watched her type the number into her phone before handing mine back to me. She gave me a look and I backed away, giving her some space. I lingered near the house while she walked further down the yard. I was struggling to hold it together.
The evening had been hard enough as it was. I had been waiting to see Ayla again all week. As the day approached, I worried Ayla would feel ambushed or pressured again by my being there. I didnât want that. I asked Briggs if he and Mina would tag along. It kept Ayla and me apart for the first part of the evening, but she seemed comfortable.
When she had stepped away to take the call, I knew it was him. I hadnâ t planned on coming after her, but something in my gut kept telling me something was off. I was glad I did. I needed to know what was going on. If someone was coming after her, I would keep her safe at any cost. Especially since it sounded like Kingston was being reckless with her safety.
I focused my hearing on Ayla. I could still hear her but couldnât make out what Apha Harden was saying on the phone. She was too far away, and she was careful not to say anything that would give me any information. She knew Iâd be listening. I was also watching. Her shoulders became more tense the more they spoke, her movements more anxious.
Their conversation was relatively short. When Ayla hung up, I noticed her roll her shoulders, preparing to put on the mask she knew how to wear so well. But I was getting better at seeing through it. I walked toward her. I would find out what was going on.
âWhat did he say?â
Chapar 74 TheD âHmm?â She turned to me. âOh... He told me what was going on. He said not to worry about it. It really isnât a big deal.â
âCome on, Ayla,â I pushed. âI need to know if youâre in danger. You may not be a member of my pack anymore, but youâre in my territory.â
âAnd thereâs nothing for you to worry about,â she said, pushing past me toward the guest house. âIâm perfectly safe.â
I followed after her. âHow do you know that?â
âI just do.â
âI donât believe you, Ayla,â I said. âBut if you donât want to tell me, fine. But Iâll find out whatâs going on.â
She turned on her heel. âWhy do you even care, Theo?â
âYou know exactly why I care, Ayla,â I snapped.
âWell, you shouldnât,â she insisted. âIt wonât help either of us.â
I laughed bitterly. âWhy is that?â She didnât respond. I moved closer, stopping centimeters away. âBecause you still care. We both know you do.â
âThat doesnât matter,â she whispered, stepping away from me. âNot anymore.â
âWhen it comes to your safety, it absolutely matters,â I insisted. âPlease, Iâm not going to lock you away or anything, Ayla. I just want to make sure youâre looked after. Please.â
She closed her eyes. Running her hands through her hair, she hugged.
âYou have to promise not to freak out,â she said forcefully. âWhat 28.89%

She wasnât helping ease my mind, but I knew I couldnât let my instincts take over.
I gave her a tight nod. âUnderstood,â
She crossed her arms over her chest. âThere was an incident at the Alphasâ Gathering with another Alpha. He... took an interest in me, and at the banquet, he kind of attacked me.â
â
My fists clenched. My heart was beating a mile a minute. Kieran was pushing to the forefront, fighting me as I pushed him back.
âI was fine. It wasnât that bad,â she insisted. âKingston, Briggs, and a few of the others stopped him before anything happened.â
Briggs knew and he didnât f****ng tell me? They all would have known.
âWho was it?â I asked, using all my strength to keep my voice even.
âAlpha Conner of the Shadow Claw pack,â she said. âWell, former Alpha Conner. He lost his rank and was restricted to his pack territory for five years.â
âBut...â
âBut heâs missing,â she said. âAlpha Harden is looking into it.â
âAnd they think heâll be coming for you.â I assumed.
She nodded. âItâs a possibility, but thereâs no way to know for sure. I doubt Iâm at the top of his list, though.â
âDoesnât matter,â I said shortly. âIf thereâs any chance he could be 16.228 Chapter 74: Thea 288 Vouchers fixating on you, we should be prepared.â I could still see how tense she was. I reached out and rested my hands on her shoulders, hoping to give her at least a little comfort. âThere are few pack warriors that live in this area. Iâll have them do some extra patrols for a while, okay? And it may be better if you moved into the main house.â
âNo,â Ayla said, shaking her head. âI donât want to intrude.â
âYou wonât be,â I said. âBesides, this isnât something I can keep from my father. Heâll insist on it anyway.
âOkay,â she conceded.
âWho all in Sablemane knows youâre here?â I asked.
âJust a few,â she shrugged. âKingston, Pierce, Emma, my boss, Erica. Thatâs about it. Everyone else knows Iâm out of town, but not I donât think they know where.â
âGood,â I said. âThat makes things easier.â
My hands were still on her arms, my thumbs stroking her skin. The tingling was hard to ignore. I donât know if it was helping her, but it was helping me. At least I no longer felt the urge to hunt Conner down and tear him to pieces. All that mattered was that I kept her safe.
I fought the desire to pull her into an embrace, feeling like the safest place for her was in my arms. I didnât think she would see it that way. That wasnât fair to her. So, I dropped my hands, hoping to remove some of the temptation.
âWe should go let everyone know whatâs going on,â I said.
She winced. âYeah, I guess so.
