Chapter 60
The Luna’s Choice by Kat Silver
Chapter 60: Ayla âThe hell he doesnât,â Kingston bellowed. âThereâs no way youâre going. Itâs not happening. What were you even thinking, Ayla?â
I stood up. âI was thinking it was an honor to do this for a man who helped save my family. I was thinking I could be there to help my cousin plan the most important day of her life. I was thinking about seeing the few friends I left behind without an explanation.
I was thinking, maybe, just maybe, I could make sure my family was f****ng safe without me.
Kingston scoffed. âYeah, the family that betrayed you every chance they got. And a man who left you to deal with them by yourself. Thatâs such an honor,â he said sarcastically. âAll theyâll try to do is weasel their way back into your life to take advantage of you again. And Torin just wants to get you back with Theo. And as far as Mina goes, sheâs lived without you for ten years. I highly doubt it would break her heart if you werenât there.â
The sound of my palm against his face registered before the feeling of it did. How dare he? My fists were clenched at my sides and I was fuming. I could even feel Dasha stir slightly at the back of my mind. Kingstonâs shoulders fell, and I could tell he regretted what he said, but it was too late.
âAyla, Iâm...â
âShut up,â I spat. âFirst of all, I wasnât asking your permission, Kingston. I was letting you know what I was considering so we could discuss it. It was a courtesy. If I decide to go, I will f****ng go. You donât own me, Kingston. Iâm not your f*****g property.
Second, donât you dare pretend to know the feelings of people you donât know.

I pushed past him, heading for the door. I couldnât be around him right now. I was about done with his sh*t.
I was almost to the door when he jumped in front of me, grabbing my arms.
âAyla, stop,â he said desperately. âIâm sorry. I shouldnât have said that.â
âWhich part?â
âAny of it,â he rushed. âI just donât want you to leave me.â
âIâm not leaving you, Kingston,â I said. âIâm just going for work.â
âBut I canât protect you if youâre not here,â he insisted, pushing his hands through his hair.
âAnd what do I need protection from so desperately, Kingston? Because I canât take the constant shadow anymore,â I yelled.
âYou keep treating me like a child. You wonât tell me what youâre so worried about, and I canât do anything on my own. I need some d**n space.â
His face went pale and fear filled his eyes. âFrom me?â
I sighed. His expression broke my heart, but I couldnât lie to him. I reached out and grabbed his hand gently.
âI think we both need a little space,â I said quietly. âIâm not leaving you, Kingston. Thatâs not what this is. But Iâm going to do this. I need to go back for a while.â
He wrapped his arms around me. He held me as if I would disappear if 27.74%

âWhat if he tries to get you back?â
âKingston,â I said with exasperation.
âIâm serious, Ayla. Now that he and Kylee broke up, nothing is stopping him.â
âExcept for any inclination that he wants me back,â I said. âIf he wanted to be with me, donât you think he would have shown up to the Gathering?â
Kingston didnât say anything.
âMy feelings havenât changed, Kingston,â I told him. âIâm still with you.â

Kingston Ayla and I had dinner together, but there was still a tension between us. When we were done, she settled on the couch to read for a while. I needed to talk to Pierce, so I headed toward his apartment. He opened the door before I even had to knock.
âWhoa,â he said when he saw me. âYou look like s**t.â
I pushed into his living room. âAylaâs going back to Greytooth territory.â
âWhoa, what?â Pierce said with concern. âWhat the hell happened?â
âLuna Grace asked her to write a biography for Alpha Torin,â I replied. âShe has to go to interview him and get the information she needs.â

âShe said she needs space, Pierce.â I threw myself down on his couch. âShe practically said I was smothering her.â
âMan, you kind of have been,â Pierce said.
âIâm just staying close,â I snapped. âIâm trying to keep her safe. With the break-in at city hall and me st**idly drawing attention to her at the Gathering, I canât afford to make a mistake.â
âBut you still refuse to tell her why youâre acting this way,â Pierce pointed out. âOf course she thinks youâre being clingy.â
âReally?â I shot at him incredulously. âYou too?â
âHey, just calling it like I see it. Either she thinks youâre being clingy, or she starts to think youâre hiding something, which you are.
Neither is going to work out well for you, dude.â
âIâm not telling her, Pierce.â
âThen maybe itâs good for her to get away from the pack for a few days,â Pierce said, handing me a beer he had pulled from the fridge.
âGiving Theo exactly what he wants,â I snapped. âYou know heâs going to try to get her back. Ayla doesnât think he will, but he will.â
âThen he tries,â Pierce said with a sigh. âEither way, you canât keep her here like a child, Kin. If sheâs telling you sheâs feeling smothered, youâ ve got to back off. Besides, do you really think she could forgive Theo for what he did?â
âShe forgave her mother and sister,â I said.
âYeah, but she still cut them out of her life.â He took a drag from his 69.31%

âAnd how the hell do I do that?â
âShow her support. Let her know you realize this is important to her. That you get this is something that she needs to do. Show her that you believe sheâll come back to you, even if you donât.â
